REGINA — A health region in Saskatchewan is reporting what appears to be the first human cases of West Nile virus in Canada this summer.

The Sun Country Health Region says two people in southeastern Saskatchewan had mild forms of the infection and are recovering.

They are the first reported human cases of West Nile virus infection in Saskatchewan for 2010.

Surveillance maps posted on the Public Health Agency of Canada's website indicate there have no human cases of West Nile this year across the country.

Saskatchewan health officials had warned residents to take extra precautions because wet weather across the southern half of the province this year led to a rising number of mosquitoes which can carry the virus.

But they recently added that in spite of the higher numbers, the risk has been lower and they don't expect to see many people infected.
