CHICAGO — One of the leading medical journals in the United States is looking for a new editor.

Dr. Catherine DeAngelis has announced she is leaving the Journal of the American Medical Association and returning to Johns Hopkins in Maryland.

She is 70 and was Hopkins' vice dean for academic affairs before going to JAMA as its first female editor-in-chief in 2000.

DeAngelis has worked to strengthen the ethics of medical journal publishing, aiming to make doctor-industry ties more transparent.

She plans to develop a Center for Professionalism in Medicine and related professions at Johns Hopkins medical school.

She departs JAMA as of June 30 next year.
