The Canadian Standards Association has issued a product safety alert on some hockey goaltending helmets because they don't meet safety standards.
CSA International announced the alert for WJD Pro helmets, which are manufactured and distributed by Jaguar Sports of Caledonia, Ont.
The affected hockey gear display a counterfeit reproduction of a CSA registered trademark and have not been certified by the group.
CSA says using the helmets could result in serious head trauma or concussions if a fall to the ice, collision or impact from a stray puck or hockey stick were to occur.
In addition, CDA says the "Cats Eye" facial wire cage does not meet with penetration test requirements and could result in serious eye injuries or blindness.
The affected helmets can be identified by the elastic straps on the back that bear the WJD insignia and the serial number 17619 or 17620.
The materials used to construct the helmets and the wire cage are not the same as those used when originally certified.
No injuries have been reported related to the affected helmets, which are primarily sold in specialty sporting goods stores for $200 to $350.
Consumers in possession of the WJD Pro helmet are advised to immediately discontinue use.
CSA International has certified hockey helmets, facemasks and visors for more than 25 years in Canada.
