Food recall issued for chicken soup containers

OTTAWA — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Canada Safeway are warning people with allergies to egg protein not to eat Safeway Signature Chunky Chicken Noodle Soup described below. The affected product contains egg protein which is not declared on the label.

The affected product, Safeway Signature Chunky Chicken Noodle Soup, is sold refrigerated in a 650 millilitre plastic container bearing UPC 0 58200 14000 2.

All best before codes of this product are affected by this alert.

This product is also sold as hot soup in various size self-serve unlabelled containers from the deli section of Canada Safeway stores.

The affected product is distributed through Canada Safeway stores in Western Canada and in Ontario west of Thunder Bay.

There has been one reported illness associated with the consumption of this product, the agency said Wednesday in a release.

Consumption of this product may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to egg protein.

Canada Safeway Ltd., Calgary, Alta., is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
