Five families and their newborn babies have come out of SARS quarantine, just in time for Father's Day. The parents are now able to enjoy close contact with their babies.

Sid Powell and Leslie Matthew took their 11-day-old baby girl for a walk for the first time on Sunday. The three had been in quarantine in their home since the baby was born at Mount Sinai Hospital where they were exposed to SARS by an infected intern.

"I think there is a parental instinct that jams into place and that it is survival of -- of giving your child what it needs and there is no space in your head or day to worry about what you can't do anything about," Leslie told CTV News.

Along with the five families, 60 health-care workers were also placed in quarantine. No one has developed symptoms of SARS and health officials said all the families are doing fine.

Since the families had to take full precautions, they were not able to have direct contact with each other and Sid had to wear a mask when he was around the baby. But that all changed the moment their quarantine was over.

"I opened up the bottom of the blanket and I kissed her toes because they were so cute and I just had to do that. I was waiting for ten days to do that and it was worth it," Sid said.

Earlier, Dr. Donald Low said there have been no new cases of SARS in the Toronto area over the past week. Despite the encouraging news, he said it's important to remain vigilant.

Low, a key member of Toronto's SARS containment team and the chief microbiologist at Mount Sinai Hospital, said health-care workers will be returning to work Monday.

There was some more good news. A North Carolina man who contracted SARS during a visit to Toronto appears to be out of danger. He was also allowed to emerge from quarantine over the weekend.

Toronto, meanwhile, appears to be winning the battle against SARS.

The number of probable cases has dropped by five to 50. Seven more SARS patients have been released from hospital, bringing the number of recoveries to 286.
