COCOA, Fla — Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is promising to establish a permanent base on the moon by 2020 if he's elected.

Gingrich, the former House speaker, told an overflow crowd gathered on Florida's space coast Wednesday that he wants to develop a robust commercial space industry in line with the airline boom of the 1930s. He also wants to expand exploration of Mars.

The pronouncements appeared to thrill the crowd of roughly 700 people. Florida's space coast is still suffering from a recent round of federal cuts to the space program.

But how would Gingrich pay for it?

The Republican presidential contender says he wants to offer prizes to help stimulate investment by the private sector.

Another one! A suit that can't succeed outside of sucking off the taxpayers for a subsidized life. Sick!

I wonder if he is going to talk about giving out laptops to the homeless instead of food like he did in nineties. The more his supporters encourage him the more spaced out he gets.

That sounds like a challenge directed at China. First one to put a permanent base on the moon is King of the earth, well, king of the moon anyway.

They've known about and denied climate change for years.. and when they've screwed up this planet beyond repair, the super rich and the politicians will be hopping on the first spaceship to the next habitable planet and leaving the rest of us here... at least the first stage of cleanup will be largely done.. the slime will be gone. Warning to future generations .. don't let them back.

Gingrich is a joke. Over 330 million people living in the U S of A and this and Romney is the best they can do for the Republicans? It's a sad sad state of affairs. (and don't even get me started about the GOP...)

"robust commercial space industry in line with the airline boom of the 1930s" Where is the connection? Airlines went back and forth from populated centres. There is no one on the moon. That is like saying the 'airline boom' was a result of shipping stuff to Alert.

One of the questions I have is who are the United States of America that they should deploy a permanent base on the moon? Does the moon therefore belong to them because they are able to establish a permanent base? I have no problem with different nations doing moon missions but a "permanant" base. That implies ownership...I just see too many issues that are not settled.

Its interesting how Newt will do anything and say anything to get votes. Another of his good ideas is taking over Cuba. But I think the moon base idea is probably the wildest. For a country that is trillions in debt, having to slash spending to get the deficit under control, Newt's brain wave of the week is creating a living environment on the moon if that is even possible.

Excellent idea. America needs a bold, big-brained distractive goal. (Psssst. Lefties. His idea is to create a place to deposit you. You'll be rounded up in 2019 and prepped for your new home. Until then, enjoy your freedom.)

Let's see, a $15 trillion national debt and Newt wants to add a few more trillion to that for a moon base. Gee Newt, why don't you find some interesting drugs and they'll make you believe you're on that base. Way cheaper. It just keeps getting better for Obama.

This is a smart stump speech by Gingrich, this is a topic Obama hasn't even touched, and it might even help Newt in the national polls (Gingrich v Obama). In the latest one he was 2 points off Obama (within the margin of error). If anyone saw his debate on CNN where he made John King look like a deer in headlights, they realize the true talent he has.... perhaps the one candidate the GOP has that can stand up to Obama in the debates? Time will tell... should be a tight race between Newt and Romney.

This is wonderful. When he said he's a man of grandiose ideas, he wasn't kidding. I like this kind of futurist thinking that will push the limits of imagination and engineering. If you want to stimulate the economy with government spending, this is the way to do it. I can't vote for him but something like this would put me in his corner. I hope if this comes to fruition, Canada can play our part with our talented group of astronauts and our engineering specialities.

I like the idea of a lunar base, however you will need more than just 8yrs to have a lunar base ready, you'll need the heavy lift capability to get you there and another rocket to send people there. It will cost billions and billions and billions of dollars, however the U.S. does not have that kind of money anymore and I don't think that the Chinese are going to lend them anymore money, especially since the Chinese have their eye's set for the moon.

Does Gingrich also want a Tiffany's jewlry store to have a moon-base and provide his wife Calista with an $800,000.00 line of credit to adorn herself with baubles while millions on Earth lose homes and live on food stamps as a result of his party's economic policies?

If I were American, he would definately have my vote! I like his aggressive idea of a base on the moon by 2020 and further space exploration to Mars. I really like President Obama and I like the way Americans are so patriotic! NASA should be applauding this new venture!
