The show still holds it's audience, surprisingly. This despite the most cringe-worthy saying ever devised...and we'll find out what that phrase is, after the break.

'American Idol' without Ryan Seacrest?

Date: Monday Jan. 9, 2012 3:45 PM ET

PASADENA, Calif. — Both Ryan Seacrest and Fox executives say they want Seacrest to remain as host of "American Idol" beyond this season.

But Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly says it's been a "tough negotiation" to make that happen.

"American Idol" is broadcast south of the border on U.S. television network Fox.

Both sides were tight-lipped about the state of those talks at news conferences on Sunday, a few weeks before the nation's most popular television show begins its 11th season.

Seacrest also had little to say about his talks with NBC Universal, where he also has a contract and there have been reports that executives there are interested in him as a replacement for Matt Lauer if Lauer leaves the "Today" show.

Without mentioning Lauer's name, Seacrest said "that job will be that person's job as long as that person wants the job."

I watched it faithfully for at least 4 solid years before it slowly was reduced into a vapid, contrived, predictable sham contest. I don't watch anymore but I do DVR it only to flash as fast as I can through it, listening to a few then rushing through to the end. It's so yesterday!

If the show wants to survive and have appeal to youth , it's time Seacrest moves on. They need some youthful vigour into the show with a new host not looking like a corporate CEO. The show has well over stayed its welcome and Simon Cowell has nothing to do with it as even he has lost his patina or mojo with his predictable bitchiness that doesn't really shock anymore. Sad thing about Idol is the winners always end up being B rate entertainers and the runner ups or lesser runner ups end up being the most popular stars. Look at Adam Lambert, Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken who all had much better careers than the winners they went up against. They're memorable while I can't recall the winners outside of Kelly Clarkson.

Seacrest makes a difficult job look easy. That personality-devoid "stiff" that Simon Cowell has hosting his "The X Factor" underscores the difference in top talent. (Similarly, Mariah Carey's husband is a bit of a goofy drip fronting "America's Got Talent.") Fox executives will need to pay to play. If I was Seacrest, who has forged a nice little multimedia entertainment empire with a worshipping eye toward producer Dick Clark, I'd avoid NBC's "Today" show. (Who needs the up-at-a-crazy-hour mornings when you're already a somebody in the business?)

I am so tired of these useless shows. No entertainment there at all. It's all show and no go as far as I am concerned. So I don't watch any of them.

Perhaps he has figured out what we all know. The show has run its course. Let it go already.
