Acclaimed Canadian author Margaret Atwood has taken to Twitter in an attempt to save Toronto's libraries, appealing for followers to sign a petition opposing cuts to the public service.

Atwood, a frequent user of the social networking site, has in recent days asked her quarter-million followers to vocalize their displeasure with plans to close some of Toronto's 99 libraries and cut services at others.

The idea was raised during a massive review of city services that suggested libraries were among the dozens of places where money could be cut from the city budget.

The review, conducted by consulting firm KPMG, suggested the city "rationalize the footprint of libraries to reduce service levels, closing some branches."

Atwood's appeal began on Thursday, when she retweeted a request from the library workers' union that people sign a petition to save the libraries. A sudden rush of signees briefly crashed the petition's website.

As of Tuesday morning, the petition had more than 24,000 signatures.

Atwood kept up the defensive through the week and later targeted a comment by Coun. Doug Ford, the mayor's brother, which suggested Toronto had too many libraries.

Ford suggested there were more libraries in the area he represents (Ward 2 – Etobicoke) than Tim Hortons. The comment was later debunked by The Grid, a weekly Toronto newspaper.

"Twin Fordmayor seems to think those who eat Timbits (like me) don't read, can't count, & are stupid eh?" Atwood wrote. Twin Fordmayor is an apparent nickname for Mayor Ford and his brother.

This week the Toronto Public Library Workers' Union asked supporters to attend the city's executive committee meeting on Thursday and appeal to save the libraries.

Mayor Ford has also asked residents to attend Thursday's meeting to discuss the KPMG recommendations. He told CP24 on Friday that residents can ask for five minutes to address the executive committee on suggestions made in the core service review.

The Toronto library offers a great service whereby you can request your book via the Toronto Library website and when it comes into your local branch, you receive an email and the book is on the shelf ready for pick up. In less than 2 minutes you are in and out of the library with your borrowed books. Toronto Library keeps up with providing all the latest books and obscure, hard to find books are there too. Visit your local branch, get a free library card and start borrowing books via their website. It's an amazing service and it is worth every penny of our taxes.

Ford says Atwood should get elected. On the other hand, Ford could get educated. Both options have their challenges, but the latter is probably more severe.

If I ever need a reminder that our nation is in decline, I only have to look at the comments left by the Ford Nation on boards like this one.

Good for her for giving this important issue more attention. Child literacy is not gravy.

I had no choice using a library growing up for school projects and assignments. We didn't have the entertainment possibilities that kids have now.
However, libraries need to cater to new students, that can get information in the safety of their own homes, and not have to trek to the libaries during odd times. Some libraries will need to be closed if they aren't being used in high or satisfactory numbers.

we need some libraries, but the amount spent on public sector employees wages in this country is ridiculous. We need to make the burden on the taxpayer lower, and if that means closing some branches and contracting out services, then go for it. That is the real world that we all live in. Some people unfortunately do not mind spending other people's money as in this article.

In this age of digital download of books, I believe more and more libraries will start closing their doors. I still purchase paper books myself but I rarely go to a library to borrow them since they're not available to be borrowed.

Why dont you get your 250,000 followers to donate to your cause and help the mayor reduce taxes.
You left wing are always looking for a hand out but never give from your own pockets.
Good for Mayor Ford, its about time that someone with a level head said NO NO. Reduce taxes and spending.
Maybe you should spend more time Margaret helping the poor or the children of Somalia instead of your selfish needs.

She can tweet all she wants. Close the libraries. Put our tax dollars to something important. Let her open up a library with her own money.
