LONDON — A strike by journalists at the BBC protesting against 100 compulsory layoffs has disrupted the broadcaster's programming.

BBC radio's flagship morning news program, "Today," started an hour later than usual at 7 a.m. because of the 24-hour strike that began Friday by the National Union of Journalists. BBC Breakfast TV announced that its programming was changed because of the walkout.

The BBC says it must cut staff because the government has reduced funding for the World Service and BBC Monitoring, which monitors foreign broadcasts.

The union's general secretary, Michelle Stanistreet, says the BBC rejected a proposal for arbitration.

Stanistreet says: "There are so many people who want to leave the BBC that this could be resolved through negotiations."
