Patrick Dempsey says the current season of 'Grey's Anatomy' will be "his last".

The 45-year-old actor, who has played Dr. Derek Shepherd in the medical drama since 2005, says he has no plans to continue with the role once season eight ends but admits his departure at the end of his current contract will be "bittersweet".

He told Italy's Vanity Fair magazine: "It's gonna be my last. I do not know what's going to happen to the other characters, but for me it's done.

"[Leaving will be] bittersweet because it's been a great part of my life. But I can't see me doing it anymore."

Patrick - whose hunky character is nicknamed 'McDreamy' by fans of the show - also plans to distance himself from romantic comedies after becoming known for films such as 'Sweet Home Alabama' and 'Made of Honour' because he would rather take on more action roles.

He continued: "No more romantic comedies, that's for sure. I'm not the right age and in any case, I do not care, I do not feel at ease. I am more interested in action films."

After the star revealed he is leaving 'Grey's Anatomy', his publicist denied it was a definite decision but admitted his contract will soon come to an end.

The representative said: "He was referring to the fact that his contract is up at the end of next season and we have no idea what the future holds."

Meanwhile, Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey on the show, has revealed that her contract will also finish at the end of next season and it is unlikely she will renew it.

Correction** Gray's anatomy is the textbook. The show's title is just creative licence with the name.

The medical text is actually GRAYS anatomy. They changed the A to an E for this show.

One of the worst shows to ever pollute television screens. Maybe the actors are realizing this after their financial goals have been met.

Lousy actor? You obviously haven't seen his best work on Grey's, his Once abd Again episodes and pretty much every movie he was in pre Grey's! So, if you don't know what you're talking about.

Time to end the show. Too many key cast members have left and / or want out. They probably could score a feature Grey's film on the big screen in a few years if they exit now and end the series on a high note. If they try to keep the show going without Pompeo and Dempsey I think it would fall apart. Personally, I think Dempsey needs a change for his career. He mumbles too much on the show and the show's soundtrack drowns out his voice. My wife and I have to rewind our PVR every time he speaks just to make out what he says over the show's music.

Interesting. Two of the main characters are leaving. Problem is Pompeo's character is the name of the series. So that would be odd (unless you include her half sister "Little Grey".) End of series after next year? Name change? Leave as is?

Wow - it looks like the cast is really going to change over the next while. It will be interesting to see what happens - who stays, who goes, which new characters are introduced.
