Celine Dion's husband says he and the singer "are very lucky" to have their new twins after the couple endured numerous unsuccessful in-vitro fertilization procedures before conceiving the boys.
Dion, 42, gave birth to the twins Saturday at St. Mary's Medical Center in Florida, via cesarean section.
In a telephone interview with CTV's etalk that aired on Monday, Rene Angelil said the couple had five in-vitro treatments since March 2009, a period of hormone injections, blood tests, ultrasounds and, ultimately, disappointment that was hard on Dion.
In Aug. 2009, the singer announced she was pregnant, but her husband later confirmed she had suffered a miscarriage.
Angelil, 68, said the couple broke into tears when doctors showed them the first baby.
"It was a very emotional moment, and even though we didn't speak to each other, we were both thinking about the time it took," Angelil said. "We are very lucky, very privileged and very fortunate to have these boys."
Angelil said Dion is still in hospital but could return home as early as Tuesday.
The couple has yet to name the boys, but Angelil said "now that we see what they look like, it will be easier."
The couple's son, 9-year-old Rene-Charles, said one of his new brothers looks like their mother and the other like their father, Angelil said.
Dion was hospitalized early last week when she began showing signs of early childbirth. She was in her 35th week of pregnancy and was due to deliver in November.
The new mother will have just a few months to recuperate before she heads back to work. Dion announced earlier this year she will return to Las Vegas for a second long-term engagement early next year.
Angelil said the singer and her team have already determined the show's pacing and song selection, while experts continue to work on the special effects.
Dion will begin rehearsing with the show's 31-piece band on January 17.
"It gives her three months to recoup," Angelil said, "and she thinks she can do it."
