Cineplex is declaring Toronto's Scotiabank Theatre free of bedbugs after an investigation spurred by organizers of the Toronto International Film Festival.

On Monday evening, a theatre patron tweeted about a friend suffering from suspected bites on his "back, bottom, thighs" after watching a film at the theatre. Later that night, festival co-director Cameron Bailey announced on Twitter that festival organizers and Cineplex were "planning for an itch-free" TIFF and that Cineplex was investigating the claim.

A thorough overnight investigation by contractors Abell Pest Control Inc., which included a specially trained sniffing dog and a detailed visual inspection, found no evidence of bedbugs in the theatre.

Pat Marshall, vice president communications and investor relations for Cineplex, told CTV.ca on Monday morning the chain "took this claim very seriously and acted immediately,"

Marshall added that media coverage of a recent bedbug outbreak in two theatres in Manhattan may have fuelled the rumours of an infestation at the theatre in Toronto.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs Sept. 9 to 19.

I have to say that I have heard enough stories about bedbugs lurking in the seats of theatres that it will keep me home, waiting for the movie to come out on DVD. The thought of having them coming into my home on my clothing leaves my blood running cold. Not worth the risk I'm thinking.

I live in the West End/Yaletown area of Vancouver and am here to warn you that Bedbugs are next to impossible to get rid of. Many, if not most of the downtown core of Vancouver is Bed Bug city, but of course my realtor never told me that but that's an issue before the courts. Before you guys return home take this advice....remove all your clothes and ditch it! It doesnt matter if you return home naked or whatever but if you have a few bugs on you and are home you can start saving for the costs of a exterminator and new furniture. The exterminator...provides hope but I promise you you'll get to know him on a first name bases because he'll be back again and again!

I think he was pushed to take matters into his own hands. I have a teenage son and if he was involved with a drug dealer I would be furious and try anything to save him like this father did for his daughter. Why do police often say they can't do anything until it's too late? Whether it be a drug dealer or an abusive spouse, the police can't seem to do anything until something really bad happens. In this case they could have raided the drug dealers home and arrested him. The whole town knew what was going on in that house but yet the police chose to do nothing. Release this man and give him a medal for doing the right thing by his daughter. I can't wait to see the episode on W5, I will certainly be watching this one.
