TORONTO Russell Smith's novel "Girl Crazy" is headed for the big screen.
House Films and New Real Films say they have teamed up to produce a movie version of the book.
Smith, who also writes a column for the Globe and Mail newspaper, has been commissioned to write the screenplay.
Production is expected to begin in Toronto next year.
The novel tells the story of a college teacher's obsession with a young woman.
Smith's previous novels include "How Insensitive" and "Muriella Pent."
"I swear and promise I'm not trying to get into movies just to meet hot chicks," Smith said in a statement. "People have often told me my books read like blueprints for screenplays, so I'm very excited to be trying my hand at a real one."
The project will be backed by Jennifer Jonas and Leonard Farlinger of New Real Films. Their latest project is Bruce McDonald's "Trigger," which will screen at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival.
Bill House (House of Films) will also be on board. His producing credits include "Foolproof" starring Ryan Reynolds.
