The pop princess crown was officially passed over the weekend when Lady Gaga bested Britney Spears as No. 1 in Twitter followers.

Lady Gaga begins her Tweeign with a stampede of 5,749,846 (and counting) followers, reports Twitaholic. Spears, who first joined the social networking site in September 2008, has a hardcore 5,707,055 in her camp. Gaga started tweeting six months earlier.

According to Reuters, Spears' place on the top of Twitter wasn't all that. She passed Ashton Kutcher in followers less than three months ago.

Does she feel any connection to her fans? "I wanted to thank all my beautiful little monsters for following me," said Lady Gaga in her inauguration video thanking her fans for making her the No. 1 tweeter. "Thank you for beginning my reign as Twitter queen. May you always have soft cuticles while tweeting, may you never have carpal tunnel."

It's easy enough to say so, but she also promised: "I vow to never partake in celebrity online shenanigans. And I vow to always tweet and tweet again."

Also notable is that Twitter itself has a substantial fan base. It's No. 11 on the top 100 list and live since February 2007--that would be one month after CNN Breaking News started its Twitter page. No one, by the way, in the top 100 has been tweeting longer than Veronica Belmont, a tech and gaming video host from San Francisco who has 1.6 million followers.
