One of the biggest daytime talk-shows in the United States has arrived in Canada's smallest province, and its two stars are soaking up the local culture.
"Live! With Regis & Kelly" will broadcast from Prince Edward Island from July 12 to 15, airing at 9 a.m. ET on CTV.
It will be a big outdoor production at Charlottetown's Confederation Landing Park, showcasing the island's beautiful scenery but also prey to the East Coast elements.
"I hope it's not raining and windy and stormy," co-host Regis Philbin said. "Because, well, if it is, it'll add to the drama of the whole thing."
Philbin has already been touring Charlottetown, taking in the city's history. But there's one part of the Maritimes he has no fondness for: mussels and oysters.
His friend and fellow talk-show host, David Letterman, got Philbin to sample some raw oysters and mussels last month. It didn't sit well.
"They were salty, they were squirmy -- I feel one is still living inside my stomach and it's been a couple of weeks now," Philbin told The Canadian Press.
The show is expected to attract fans from throughout Canada. Marc Denis travelled all the way from Quebec to catch a sight of Philbin.
"I spoke to him, I told him, 'See you Monday, sir,'" he said.
P.E.I.'s tourism office pitched the idea of hosting the show in the province. It hopes "Live! With Regis & Kelly" will bring attention -- and tourism -- to the island.
"We really felt that what we had to offer was a secret location people did not know much about," said spokesperson Brenda Gallant.
However, bringing the show to P.E.I. came at a cost to taxpayers: $1 million. That's a fifth of the province's annual tourism advertising budget.
Premier Robert Ghiz says it's worth it.
"We are the envy of our sister provinces because we have the show here," he said. "It's a return on our investment in spades."
