I may actually start watching this show now. I have long felt that Vincent D'Onofrio was one of the worst actors on TV and I'm just thrilled that he is gone, and taking Kathryn Erbe with him. Now, if only CSI Miami would ditch David Caruso ...

Law & Order shake up: D'Onofrio, Erbe and Bogosian get ditched

Date: Friday Sep. 25, 2009 1:27 PM ET

It's official. "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" is giving key stars from the hit cop show their walking papers next season.

Vincent D'Onofrio (Det. Robert Goren), partner Kathryn Erbe (Det. Alexandra Earnes) and Eric Bogosian (Capt. Danny Ross) are the latest casualties of yet another major cast overhaul in the Dick Wolf-helmed franchise.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, D'Onofrio, Erbe and Bogosian are expected to exit the series at various points during the "CI's" upcoming ninth season. The show's writers have not confirmed how, or when, each actor will be phased out.

Julianne Nicholson (Det. Megan Wheeler) has already turned in her badge because she is having a baby. The actress' real-life pregnancy was written into her character's storyline last season.

British actress Saffron Burrows will join the show as Nicholson's replacement for season nine, which premieres next spring in a special two-part episode.

Executive producer Dick Wolf is also turning to Jeff Goldblum (Det. Zach Nichols) to take over the team originally led by D'Onofrio's character.

Goldblum joined the series in 2008, replacing Chris Noth's character Mike Logan.

"Law & Order: Criminal Intent" has weathered many casting shifts since the show's launch in 2001.

These newly announced cast changes represent the biggest shift to date for the show.

According to insiders, cutting this foursome from the show could be a cost-cutting move.

As the Hollywood Reporter points out, "CI's" sweeping cast changes resemble the 2003 shakeup on "The Practice." Several key actors, including lead Dylan McDermott, Lara Flynn Boyle and Kelli Williams, were cut loose in order to minimize production costs.

"CI's" new shift in Goldblum's favour could also be linked to the creative philosophy of its U.S. home network, USA.

The cable network began airing "Criminal Intent" in 2007. Since then, USA has been leaning towards lighter-toned shows such as "Monk," "Royal Pains" and "Burn Notice."

Unlike the brooding, in-your-face D'Onofrio, Goldblum's quirky likeability is more in the tradition of "Monk's" star Tony Shalhoub. Goldblum's flair for comedy-drama clearly fits with USA's current creative direction.

D'Onofrio may not be gone for good. Although the 50-year-old actor is departing from "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" as a regular, D'Onofrio may reprise his role in the future in guest appearances.

"Law & Order: Criminal Intent" airs in Canada on CTV.

I tuned in only to watch D'onofrio's charactization. It was difficult to take your eyes off him. You could see him thinking. Guess that's it for me, Criminal Intent was the last Law & Order I watched.
Thanks. It was great while it lasted.

I am a L&O fan to highest! I didn't have a problem with Donofrio or Erbe. I was always intrigued with Donofrio. I think they'll be ok after this. They're both good actors!

I agree with Freddy, Toad, and Gail. That Goldblum fellow is not funny, I feel like he is looking down on everybody, like he knows the answer to a question and is smirking at everyone, like he is above us all.
The two lead characters, were great actors, they will have no trouble finding work. And they will again be sucessful, maybe there new bosses will appreciate them. Good Luck to them. I will not watch the show when they go.
Geez with all the crap on tv this reality junk, the creative people are being pushed out. I am glad HBO and cable are moving ahead.
Teach the networks a thing or two especially good shows NEED creative smart people. They cost MONEY. If we do not watch advertisers will not pay for commercials. Forget about the bottom line, go out on a limb and bring us shows like the old days. Mash, Mary Tyler Moore, All in the Family, The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie. You know shows with CREATIVE people on the show writing the show and directing the show.

When they phase out Goren and Eames, they will be phasing me out too. Goldblum is not a good replacement! LOCI was a good police drama, and I watched it for that reason. Now we are being offered Monk Goes To New York. I guess I understand; the show had good stories, good acting, good drama, yep time to shoot it in the foot. Dick Wolf must need a vacation...his thinking is messed up.

I will not be watching anymore! The whole show is Vincent D'onofrio. While I like Jeff Goldblum, he's no Goren.

I thought Eric Bogosian makes a great boss. He should not be ditched! I agree with Ray Jorritsma: Get rid of Caruso of CSI Miami.

The problem with Law & Order: CI was not with these cast members, but the writing. Same with the original Law & Order now.

That's it for me! My favorite was the Goren and Eames team... that's why I watched the show at all.

I really liked Chris Noth.. his first partner was okay... but Julianne Nicholson as Wheeler was never believable. Goldblum is okay but not enough to make me want to watch the show.

They should have gotten rid of Jeff Goldblum instead of D'Onofrio. For me, Goldblum's protrayal of a quirky character seems too contrived in contrast to that of D'Onofrio. D'Onofrio's protrayal of quirky Goren seems natural and convincing! If Goldblum is going to be the main actor on the show, I'm done watching Law and Order: CI!

Goldlum is a badly-needed breath of fresh air and he is a much more interesting neurotic than D'Onofrio.

I'm with montrealer. I hated D'Onofrio. I grew tired of his "overacting". Katheryn Erbe must be relieved that she no longer has to recite lame lines in responses to D'Onofrio's over-the-top lines.

Goldblum makes the show more "watchable", too bad that Julianne Nicholson bowed out so soon. Hope she comes back next season.

I think D'Onofrio made the show what it is. He was sometimes hard to watch because he's so quirky but that's what kept me watching. I think he did his part so well that some people were uncomfortable watching him. Hopefully my opinion will get posted. I've posted feedback on all kinds of stuff and rarely see it posted. ????

D'Onofrio and Erbe are L&O CI.
I can't believe they could be so stupid as to think this show will survive without them. There has never and will never be another Bobby Goren. He is the glue holding the show together. I think some of the viewers have not watched him enough to "get him". He's the cat's meow.
He and Eames are a great team. Her professionalism makes up for him being a "whack job". Bobby, please don't go. Bobby, Bobby, don't go. (lyrics to a song, almost)

D'Onofrio and Erbe are to good for this show. The work good together and are interesting. We can't have that on TV.

Please, not Burrows!! Have followed this show around the channels--loved watching all the actors & their characters develop--thought Bogosian was always right on target in his role...except for Goldblum wouldn't even give the newest lineup a watch...Boston Legal was one of our favorite shows--was always happiest when Burrows wasn't on..She is NOT L&O material in my opinion.

Me too. They make the show and have their roles down pat. I doubt I will continue to watch the show when they've gone.

Well, I'm done. They took all the good talent and characters away.
Jeff G's "comedy-drama" consists of eye rolling, stupid, inane grins and very poor acting skills.
A great show ruined.

I like Jeff goldblum and the other actors probably need a rest so I think the new cast will be okay as the writers for this show do a good job. Im sure this won't stop lovers of the show from watching.

FINALLY, I HATED D'ONOFRIO from the beginning. I watched all Law and Order shows except this one because of him and the bad cast!! Goldblum actually improved the show, but D'ONOFRIO was HORRIBLE. He must be the worst actor around. I hope the new cast will improve the show, because the stories weren't bad, just horrible and unconvinving acting
