CHICAGO — Actress Bijou Phillips says she knew her half-sister Mackenzie Phillips had consensual sex with their father, Mamas and the Papas leader John Phillips.

In a statement read by Oprah Winfrey on her talk show Friday, Bijou Phillips says she was 13 years old when Mackenzie Phillips told her about the sexual relationship.

Bijou Phillips is now 29 and says the news was confusing and scary. She says it was "heartbreaking" to think her family would leave her alone with her father.

Appearing as a guest on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Friday, Mackenzie Phillips said their father "had changed his ways as much as he was able to" and she felt Bijou Phillips was safe.

Mackenzie Phillips says she did go get her sister when she "felt like she wasn't being watched properly."

It's easy to make an accusation when the alleged perpetrator is dead and can't defend himself.
In addition, she wrote a book, then went on the talk show circuit to market the book and her story. She'd be more believable if she'd just told her story, minus the book. After all, she stands to make a lot of money from this lurid tale.
It seems to be the Hollywood way...if life treats you wrong, write a book and capitalize on it. I feel sorry for her being introduced to drugs at such a young age and she has my sympathy if this story is true for sure.

Mackenzie must be out of cash, this is great way to bring in the $$$$. Just another disfuncional day in Hollywood. Very sad, if it's true, I'm sure more stories will come out of woodwork now.

It is never too late to require people to get a license to have children. We license everything else. Just think of the additional tax revenue.

It takes a lot of courage and guts to share this kind of experience so instead of slapping insults at these victims, someone like this coming forward and telling could give yours or my kids the strength to come forward and tell when things are happening to them, or if they feel suicidal because of something like that having happened to them it could help them with feeling empowered by knowing they are not alone and be able to go hey this happens to these people to not just them. I think its a good thing when the celebrities let the world know life ain't perfect just cause they are a celebrity!

actually if you read her whole statement she says she was told about it however she does not believe it to be true. Her sister told her that she just made it up.

Shown by own father how to roll a joint by age 10; lured into "consensual" sexual relationship with own father; and drug addictions that ultimately derailed the career of an once promising actress. Where has the proper parenting gone to? Moral compass?

I understand that there are people out there who care about what these people do with their screwed-up lives but I can't fathom why.

They are not role models; they are far more messed up than the average person, and yet their personal lives continue to attract attention. Myave it's just me but I don't get it.

Perhaps this is why victims of sexual assault and incest remain quiet about their experiences. They end up being judged unfairly. Celebrity or not, this woman is a victim. We need to encourage women to speak out if they've been abused this way, not shame them for it.

GRATEFUL

This is another reason I'm glad our society worships celebrities in the loveliest of mindless fashions. They always set such a darn good example of respectable human behaviour.

We're blessed to have them. They warmly demonstrate to each of us, daily, what we're missing in our mundane, unhappy, and unfulfilling lives.

And we will continue to look up to show business people as role models.
