NEW YORK — U.S. President Barack Obama's candid comment that rapper Kanye West is a "jackass" for his outburst at the MTV awards is provoking a debate over standards of journalism in the U.S. in the Twitter age.

ABC News says it was wrong for its employees to tweet Obama's comment on West's treatment of country singer Taylor Swift.

The network said some of its employees had overheard a conversation between the president and CNBC's John Harwood and didn't realize it was considered off the record.

Although they are competitors, CNBC and ABC share a fiber optic line to save money, and this enabled some ABC employees to listen in on the interview as it was being taped for later use.

Their attention was drawn to chatter about West, who was widely criticized for interrupting Swift as she accepted an award at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards to say that Beyonce deserved it.

Emails shot around among ABC employees about Obama's comments, said Jeffrey Schneider, ABC News spokesman. Before anything was reported on ABC's air or website, at least three network employees took to Twitter to spread the news and the story was off and running.

Terry Moran, a former White House correspondent, logged on to Twitter and typed: "Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential."

When ABC News authorities found out about it, they had the tweets deleted after about an hour, Schneider said. Moran declined a request to comment.

Harwood said there was no explicit agreement with the president that those comments were off the record. But he said it is broadcast tradition that such pre-interview chatter is considered off the record until the formal interview begins. Harwood is holding to that: He would not discuss what the president said before their interview and has no plans to do so on CNBC.

He said he was aware that it was likely someone outside of CNBC was listening to his conversation with the president.

"It's one of those things that's unfortunate," he said. "But I think it's an honest mistake."

There was no immediate response to requests for comment from White House spokesmen.

Twitter, a technology that's a natural tool for reporters who love to tell people what they know whenever they know it, has raced ahead in usage before many news organizations have developed policies to govern its use, said Richard Wald, a former ABC News executive and professor at Columbia University.

"You need to reinforce the sense that you have to verify before you publish," Wald said. "The policies may be very comprehensive, but they may not be adequate to the technology that news organizations have."

The incident is reminiscent of past "open-mic" incidents involving politicians. President Ronald Reagan, while waiting to make a speech in 1984, joked that he had outlawed the Soviet Union and that "the bombing begins in five minutes." During the 2000 presidential campaign, George W. Bush turned to running mate Dick Cheney to point out a reporter from The New York Times and used an obscenity to describe him.

"If you're sitting there with a microphone on, you don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy," said Kelly McBride, an expert in journalism ethics for the Poynter Institute. "If you're a governor or president, you know that."

She also questioned whether news organizations should be agreeing to go off the record with the president.

Judging by the things written by other Twitter users since West's action, Obama wasn't in the minority, she said.

"The president calling Kanye West a 'jackass' is perfect information for a tweet," she said. "In fact, that's the ideal format. You can do it in 140 characters. There's not much else to say."

I don't agree with the rapper or whoever he is for saying what he did, but I don't think Obama's comments should have been an issue at all he should have kept his mouth shut in front of the camera.

You are all missing the point here. What Obama thinks about Kanye isn't important, it is pretty clear that everyone has a bad opinion on what he did, everyone from Kelly Clarkson to Donald Trump, to apparently Obama. Kanye acted like a drunken jackass, and took too long to appropriately apologize for his boorishness.

However, the fault here is in the abc employees publishing "news" that was not meant to be published. They acted childishly by twittering the quote and leaking the audio track. He was just saying how he felt, off the record in chit chat, just because he was talking to a reporter doesn't mean it needs to be reported.

It doesn't matter what Obama thinks every second of the day, yes Kanye is a jackass, and yes, I along with 100,000's of other people will still be attending his concerts.

Kanya aka Jackass already pulled this stunt before when he lost a award over his own music video. So this is his second time acting like a fool. Im glad Obama said that!!!! If a no name average Joe off the street jumped up there and said that crap security would have beat there ass all the way off stage and took them to jail. Is Kanye above the law?

West derseved it no matter what. He should be proud that the president actually knows his name. For the next time do good deeds for others and perhaps your name will be in a good stand with everyone.

Maureen,
Why can the President not be allowed to comment on Pop culture when in a candid and non-work related disucssion. He is allowed to have a life outside of work (albeit a very limited one), and he is human and thus will have opinions on things just like the rest of us.

If he had spoken this way at a press conference, or during the actual official interview, you might have had a point... but this was just pre-interview banter that someone else recorded and tried to make a story out of.
Besides, as everyone is saying, they agree with what he said. He did not say anything overly agregious, so why not cut some slack?

Maureen: In case you misunderstood!!!! President Obama did NOT make this comment outright!!! He was overheard in a private conversation and then it was put on twitter. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!! Plus, everyone is entitled to their opinions including the president! Respect his as you would respect your own!!!!

I'm not sure this is a story for entertainment? It is clearly about journalism and a president who should have been at least a little more... distinguished in his comment knowing that he was talking to a journalist. But it also begs other questions about the things reporters hear but don't report.
I mean if a reporter hears the President say that North Korea would have a 'nuclear accident' in the morning, should he report it? It wasn't in an interview? Is it news?

But since we're on the topic, Kayne West is a jackass, this isn't the first time he's behaved like a spoiled child at an awards show. If I was his record company, I'd cut him lose. Or if I was his agent, I'd drop him.

All I can say is that was extremely insensative of Kanye at such an emotional moment for
Taylor. Obama had every right! Totally agree with him. Kanye wouldn't have been called a "jackass" if he had just kept his mouth shut!!!!!!

Obama must be doing a bang-up job as president if the only thing the press can report on is his calling Kanye West a jackass, and it's causing this much stir. First off Kanye West is a jackass. He not only didn't show respect for another artist. He stepped on a young girl's moment in the spotlight. (His mama must be so proud.) Obama only expressed the same feelings as everyone else has expressed. Secondly, isn't the president doing anything more interesting and important for the press to report? They don't seem to have their priorities straight.

With the increasing number of information mediums, we will likely get more "off-the-record" comments being "published" which tends to compromise journalistic integrity.

There are still a lot of good journalists out there, if you know where to look.

I don't care whether it's coming from the US President or some TV entertainment rag; why are we still giving news time to this puff piece?

One egocentric pseudo celebrity stole another's limelight and made her cry. So what? This is a non-story; bury it and move on.

While I think we can all agree that Kanye was a jackass - among other things. BUT Obama lowers the office of the President by even commenting on this. He is the leader of the free world and should be focusing his attention on issues that pertain to all Americans and their allies rather than engaging in commenting on pop culture. He has confused the POTUS with being a pop icon. Too bad for Americans that this is their President.

You shouldn't have to look around to see who is listening when you are having a private conversation with someone, even if you are the president of the United States. President Obama voiced what most of us are thinking anyway. Nothing wrong with that! Great to see the human side of President Obama.

Mr Obama is 100% right.....

jackass, jerk, idiot - whatever you prefer - Kanye West fits the bill.

Taylor Swift - I love your music, and anyone who didn't know you before....they certainly know who you are now!

Kanye West - I hope you enjoyed your career while it lasted.

I find it funny that this has made news. Haven't the Americans upheld their right to opinion and free speech? Its not like he made a racist or sexist remark. He had an opinion on a every entertainment news story like every other person has has the right to. All Obama has proven is that he is a regular person- just like the rest of us. Go figure :-P

Mr. Obama nailed it on the head when he voiced his opinion. The media plays it up for the sensationalism (such a word?). Just because he wears the hat of the president, he is entitled to the same observations as you and I. There are times when he MUST watch what he says, but this was not one of them. It's too bad that what has come out of this is criticism of Mr. Obama, and Kanye West gets another 15 minutes of fame.

Sherry: Go back under your rock. You are either totally disconnected with the rest of the world, or simply pretending to be ignorant to post an opposing view. If you were part of an awards show, I guess you would show a complete lack of respect and forcefully take a microphone from someone just to make a stupid, self indulgent comment.

I felt so bad for Taylor Swift. That was her moment and that jackass stole it. What if she never gets that spotlight again? Kanye ruined it for her. While Beyonce tried to rectify the situation, it could not, ever, make up for what was taken from Ms. Swift!

ABC's employees who posted the comment (not ABC News as an organiztion) showed a complete lack of jouralistic morals. Regardless, Obama was right and besides, I've said and have heard others make the exact same comment about Kanye.

Maybe this will be a wake-up call doe West...

Personally, when I heard the sound bite I applauded!

If you want to discuss the Media's handling of this, and review or overhaul the industry there's not going to be much left... integrity and character are disappearing faster in the media than in entertainment...

Good to see Obama's human side!

To think he's a jackass is one thing,, to say it outloud is another....

I watched Taylor on the Veiw yesterday,, Whoopi and Sherry both said very little against kanye, good to see Obama break the solidarity.

I don't often praise this guy, but this time he did good.

Just take it easy Kayne, you are not all that better then anybody else.

This is not about whether Kayne West is a jackass, that is a given.

This is about the lack of integrity in the faux media, those who believe that blogging and tweeting make them journalists. These folks lack the training and background to understand the rules of journalism and give real journalists a bad name. Perhaps the networks and papers are to blame for using these sources in the race to be first and the need to sensationalize the news rather than report on it with a degree of analysis.
