HONG KONG — Action film star Jackie Chan is starring in a television commercial that will be broadcast around the world in a bid to revive tourism in Hong Kong after the SARS outbreak.

The Hong Kong-born star won't perform any of his trademark daredevil stunts in the commercial being filming here, the city's Tourism Board said Saturday.

Chan will simply greet potential visitors in several languages in the ad to be broadcast in 30 cities around the world, board spokesman Simon Clennell said.

Hong Kong business leaders estimate the SARS outbreak earlier this year cost the city $4 billion to $6 billion in retail trade and airline and hotel businesses.

Television viewers in the United States, Britain, Australia and Canada will see Chan's commercial in the coming weeks, Clennell said. It will also be aired in mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia.

The World Health Organization has said that SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, was contained worldwide in early July, after killing more than 800 people.
