She might not make success seem all that complicated, but Avril Lavigne says she "kind of freaked out" when she was announced the winner of four Junos Sunday.
The 18-year-old scored single of the year for the hit song Complicated, album of the year for Let Go, best new artist and best pop album.
"I kind of freaked out. I was like, 'Wow!'" Lavigne told Canada AM Monday.
With host Shania Twain leading the Juno festivities, it must have been deja vu for Lavigne, who, at age 14, won the chance to perform with the Canadian pop-country star.
She says she knew back then that she "so had to do this" with her life.
"I just remember walking out on stage and not being able to stop smiling," Lavigne recalls. "It was just so intense."
Lavigne, who has reaped international recognition, said it felt great to be honoured for her music at home.
"It's wicked being Canadian and being back in Canada and just celebrating Canadian music," Lavigne told etalk's Thea Andrews backstage at the Corel Centre Sunday night.
She said she'll keep her four awards at her parents' home in Napanee, Ont. on a shelf she built with her dad.
