Brian Williams will lead an all-star team of broadcasters and former Olympians to cover the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, giving Canadians unprecedented coverage of what may be the biggest event ever held on Canadian soil.
Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium unveiled the all-star lineup Thursday morning. Among the names revealed for the commentary team: Sale and Pelletier, Catriona Le May Doan, Gaetan Boucher, Jean-Luc Brassard, Elizabeth Manley, Beckie Scott, Karen Percy Lowe, Brian Stemmle -- all stars of past Winter Games.
Williams, Canada's best-known Olympics sportscaster, joins a team of 91 people for English-language coverage, spread over 11 television networks, 10 radio stations and a dedicated website.
The French-language coverage will include another 50 athletes, commentators and analysts.
Williams said the media coverage will be impressive. Eleven television networks will be covering the Games in Vancouver, including CTV, TSN, Rogers Sportsnet, RDS, and the Aboriginal People's Television Network.
CTV.ca and its the local CTV British Columbia site, as well as The Globe and Mail, and Rogers radio stations across the country will also closely follow the Games.
"Even the IOC is impressed" by the extensive coverage, Williams told Canada AM on Thursday, joined by two former Olympians, figure skater Jamie Sale and skier Brian Stemmle.
The 140-member on-air team will include 31 Olympians.
"And naturally with Brian Stemmle here he'll be doing skiing, and Jamie Sale out in Edmonton will be part of our figure skating coverage," Williams said.
Sale and Stemmle told Canada AM they are excited to help cover the Olympics on home soil.
"Being in our home country is the biggest honour we could have received," Sale said.
"There is no better event for us to be on the stage with."
Stemmle said he is honoured to be working with a long list of talented broadcasters and athletes.
"I think it's going to be really cool for me, a guy who competed in 1988 as a kid, and now I've done the broadcast thing for a while for Rogers Sportsnet, now to get to do it again in our home country, at an Olympics. It's cool for me because it's come full circle," he said.
Keith Pelley, president of Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium, said the consortium is providing an unprecedented breadth of Olympic coverage.
"The advantage of the Consortium is the diverse and broad scope of talent from various assets, giving us expertise and star power in all areas -- sports, news, entertainment and music. The breadth and depth of high-calibre talent available to the Consortium is unparalleled," Pelley said in a press release.
"By announcing 13 months in advance of the Games, the Olympic broadcast team will be able to closely follow the World Cup circuit and develop a strong rapport with the athletes and National Sports Federations leading up to 2010."
Williams will be joined by Lloyd Robertson, CTV's chief news anchor and senior news editor, to cover the opening and closing ceremonies of the Vancouver Games.
English-language hosts
Here are the English-language hosts for the Games themselves, which will be broadcast simultaneously on CTV, Rogers Sportsnet and TSN:
On CTV, Williams will lead coverage during prime-time hours (7 p.m. - 2 a.m. ET). James Duthie, host of NHL on TSN, will work alongside CTV News journalist Lisa LaFlamme to cover daytime events (Noon - 7 p.m. ET). Duthie will also host coverage of the men's hockey team.
TSN sports anchor Jennifer Hedger will also appear on CTV during primetime to host the Whistler coverage, while daytime events are hosted by well-known TSN personality Michael Landsberg.
On Rogers Sportsnet, Vancouver personality Don Taylor will cover the Olympics with Martine Gaillard, Brad Fay and Evanka Osmak.
On TSN, veteran sportscaster Darren Dutchyshen will take the reins during prime time, and Dave Randorf will cover his seventh Olympics during daytime hours.
Olympic events will be covered by some of Canada's most famous Olympic athletes. Among them, two-time gold medalist and five-time world champion Catriona Le May Doan will give Canadians key insights into long-track speed skating.
On the Internet, veteran sports journalist Stephen Brunt of the Globe and Mail will be a key contributor to a dedicated website, CTVOlympics.ca. Meanwhile, outspoken radio host Bob McCown will speak his mind on 21 radio stations across the country.
Canadians will also be treated to extended coverage on Canada AM, which will be broadcast from Vancouver and Whistler during the early-morning hours.
Meanwhile, the biggest names in French sports broadcasting will keep Canadians up to date on RDS, TQS, RIS Info-Sports, APTN and the French-language dedicated website RDSolympiques.ca.
"We have assembled the strongest and most knowledgeable Olympic French-language broadcast team, the majority of whom already have an established connection with sports fans, whether it be as former athletes, Olympians or proven sportscasters," said Gerry Frappier, French Chef de Mission of the Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium.
"Together, RDS, TQS, RIS Info-Sports and APTN will provide francophones throughout Canada with more hours of French-language Olympic coverage than ever before."

Please let's not even entertain any protectionist responses to this issue. Canadian consumers go south to shop because of the cheaper prices. How about resorting to competitive pricing as a solution...that will keep Canadian shoppers at home.
