While some Canadians are welcoming a deep blanket of snow that will give the nation its first coast to coast white Christmas in 40 years, the wintry weather is also causing havoc at travel hubs all over the country.

From sea to icy sea, the weather has snarled airline travel, stranding travellers trying to get home or to a vacation spot on Christmas Eve

Much of the problems stemmed from chaos at Vancouver's airport, where three major snow storms in the last week have forced Air Canada to cancel many of its flights.

On Wednesday, the snowfall continued, and it was expected the city would get a year's worth of snow - about 55 centimetres - in only a few days.

Though crews worked to clear runways and kept the airport open, Air Canada was forced to cancel all of its short-range and medium-range flights in order to keep their longer routes open.

"We're concentrating on the long-haul flying," said airline spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick told CTV Newsnet. "We're only able to launch a certain number of aircraft due to the weather and the need to do things like de-ice the planes.

"We have to make a choice over what flights we're going to operate. And we fly the long-haul ones in these situations because once the weather improves, it's much easier to recover on the short-haul flying."

That means flights between Alberta and Vancouver - in both directions - have been cancelled.

The Air Canada announcement comes after days of cancellations and delays, and the Vancouver region's weather appears to be only getting worse.

"Total snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 centimeters are forecast before the snow tapers to a few flurries Thursday morning. Strong winds will also develop as the system approaches and visibility will be locally reduced in blowing snow," said a snowfall warning on Environment Canada's website.

Thirty centimetres fell in the greater Vancouver region on Sunday alone.

WestJet meanwhile, was struggling to keep service going and has called in their office staff to help deal with the travel backlogs.

WestJet spokesman Robert Palmer said the airline wanted to avoid even a few cancellations, because it would have a domino effect that would disrupt traffic across the country.

"We need to make sure that if we send a plane to Vancouver full of people that we can actually get it out of there," Palmer told The Canadian Press from Calgary. "If we send a couple of flights this afternoon and they get stuck in Vancouver, then we've hurt our entire operation."

"Most people have given up"

While some travellers have been stranded at the airport for four days, many of them are taking the cancellations and travel interruptions in stride, CTV BC's Stephen Smart reported Wednesday night.

"Most people, they say, 'well it's the snow, it's mother nature, what can be done of it?'"

Smart added that many stranded passengers had cleared out of the airport by Wednesday night, with some returning to their homes and others heading to nearby hotels.

"It just means that most people have given up," he said.

While Christmas Day is traditionally less busy in terms of flights, Smart said it's unlikely anyone will be able to get out Thursday.

"Tomorrow is a lighter travel day, so it may be a little better in terms of volumes," said Smart, but he added that the prognosis for many travellers still won't be any better because of the massive backlog.

"It's a tough thing to watch, especially at Christmas time."

The cancellation crisis

One flight passenger told told CTV News he and his daughter spent hours on the tarmac in Vancouver, waiting for their flight to depart for Toronto amid weather and volume-related delays.

"They put us on a plane and left us there for 11 hours without moving, and with the threat we would lose our flight if we got off the plane. And technically they said you can't get off the plane if you have bags," said traveller Larry Mickolwin.

"And then they left us sitting in the dark saying it would be more comfortable sitting there than in the lobby, and they just didn't have their act together, so they left us there for 11 hours, and then our flight, so we were there for 16 hours."

In Toronto, several days of falling snow have the city's road maintenance teams playing catch-up. The heavy snow has caused numerous delays at Pearson International Airport, with frustrated passengers trying to find alternate ways to make it home for Christmas.

Greater Toronto Airports Authority spokesperson Scott Armstrong told CTV.ca that conditions at Pearson International airport have improved significantly.

"Things are going well today," he said.

"We're looking at about 50 cancellations today. There were some delays this morning but they've cleared up. (But) you need to consider the airports at both ends of the flight."

How on Earth is *snow* affecting ferries?? I crossed ferries at least twice daily in the Maritimes and even the HEAVIEST of snowfalls did NOT stop ferries.

The snow *melts* when it hits the water and visibility is certainly not worse than in fog, which does not stop ferries. The winds aren't high either.

It sounds to me like the ferry companies are just looking for an excuse to take the day off in Vancouver - or an excuse to take it easy & harmonize with all the media sensationalism about something so regular as snow - but oh no, we have to PRETEND it never snows in Vancouver and that 5cm is a NATURAL DISASTER - what a joke!!

We're gonna blow the winter olympics SOOO bad. For the past 2 winters it has been snowing LIKE MAD for weeks-on-end (!) here and EVERY time the city is PARALYZED & IN CHAOS - even if only 5cm falls! - and the authorities are in denial - "no, it's not happening - can't invest in public safety - need to spend the money on olympic parties in whistler & on ceo compensation".

Dear MHB

Wow, life must be rough for you down there in poor old over-taxed Burlington! I can't believe your sidewalks haven't been cleared of snow yet! But, I doubt you've cleared "tons" of snow off your sidewalk though, but if you have, you must be a stout, young fit person who enjoys the fresh cold air, and the back bending labour of shovelling "tons" of snow. The fact that you had to shovel your own sidewalk is an incredible travesty. I think you should sue the City of Burlington.
Then I think you should move out of the country, because obviously the standards of living you require can not be met in Canada. By the way, which has snow for a significant portion of our year. Try Florida, Spain, Iraq, Saudai Arabia, maybe even Afghanistan.

TO MHB" "It is better to keep Christmas as a secular occasion that unifies all of us." Umm...why? CHRISTmas is a religious celebration. Always was, always will be.

It's NOT about Santa Claus, it's not about frenzied shoppers, it's not about lights, holly, mistletoe or anything else. It's about millions of Christians celebrating the birth of their Saviour. To those who don't believe, fine. That's your choice, and aren't you lucky to live in a country where is is fine not to believe? But don't tell the rest of us that our major religious celebrations like Christmas and Easter need to be turned into 'secular' occasions. Try suggesting to our Muslim friends that Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Alha should be "secularized". Try suggesting the same thing to our Jewish friends celebrating Hannaukah, or Buddhists who celebrate Visakah. No one would even THINK to suggest it should these should be secular occasions, would they? And rightly so. Same thing with Christmas. It is what it is -- and I'll celebrate it as generations of my family have done...in church, in a RELIGIOUS spirit.

Merry Christmas to all. Peace.

I love those who keep saying 'CHRIST-mas', as if they're making some sort of profound statement.

Well, Christ wasn't born in December, neither on the 25th nor on the 26th nor was he born in Canada or the United States and there is no snow where Issa was born.

Jesus or Issa by His real Aramaic/Arabic name was born in Arabia to Palestinian parents.

Christmas or CHRIST-mas in North America is a pagan holiday of over-consumption, the real celebration of Christianity is happening via the kindness, love and comfort given in slums, orphanages, prisons and war zones around the world by those who truly love Him and are taking care of His flock.

Peace everyone. Peace.

Yes, this is Canada. We have been spoiled the last number of years with greener Christmases and less storms around Christmas time. Because it is winter, no matter what way you travel, you always need to be prepared... for delays and cancellations especially.

As for Air Canada cancelling or postponing flights in and out of Vancouver, Hooray for them. Wow! Someone was thinking of passenger safety. Yes, I understand you would like to get home or go visit loved ones. But its better that you arrive a little late than not at all because of an accident that could have been prevented. And I am sure that Air Canada is not the only airline throughout Canada who has had to cancel or delay flights. Its weather, deal with it.

As for Air Canada always getting the brunt of horrible comments, I am stumped. I am an avid traveller and I have flown countless airlines all over the world. Air Canada is by far, one of the best out there. I have similar complaints that people have made in regards to Air Canada against various other airlines, including West Jet. Low and behold, the airline employees are people too. Just as with ANY job, there are things that occur that, unfortunately, these employees have to endure as well. So remember, when your flight is delayed, cancelled or gate is changed, this affects the airline people as well. Instead of getting upset with them, be patient and trust me, you will be treated better and you will feel better too. Its not always easy, but it does work.

Here's to hoping that everyone gets to their destination safely and has a Happy Holiday!

Let it Snow!

B. Kelley, Ontario: First, Merry Christmas to you and your family!. I feel joyful about Christmas eventhough I am not a Christian and I am not likely to be. It is better to keep Christmas as a secular occasion that unifies all of us. Those who want to celebrate in the Church are free to do so!. Actually, the selection of this date has NOTHING to do with Jesus!. When the Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity, he wanted to unify the Christian and Pagan soldiers in his army. So he picked Dec. 25th, which is the birth date of the pagan God Mitra, and made it a celebration of Jesus birth as well. I believe that there is not a single historical document that has any reference to the birth date of Jesus!.

How politics or religion gets into a weather blog is beyond me....neither belong as commentary to this topic.

As for the weather...yes this IS Canada..and yes we have all 4 seasons..and yes winter is one of them..and yes it always falls around christmas..and yes this year mother nature was a bit more harsh and caused some problems and tensions..but i bet everyone of us would prefer to live and celebrate in Canada during the holiday season with our family or friends than anywhere else.

And please keep the religious and political comments to appropriate blogs.

B. Kelley, Ontario
said

To: Justin. Think about it. If it wasn't for Christ, there would be no CHRISTmas holiday for you to celebrate in your own way. Since the holiday is based on CHRISTian beliefs it is totally appropriate to bring religion into it. The secular hi-jacking of Christmas can never be a valid excuse for suppressing the religious nature of the holiday by those who choose to believe in its origins. It is a historical fact that Jesus was not born in December but more likely sometime in the summer months. However, the actual date of His birth is irrelevant. It's the fact of His birth that is being celebrated. Merry Christmas.

My cousin has been on hold in TO since Thurs. when he came in on a flight from Edmonton headed for PEI. He still hasn't got out of Toronto and that's a week tomorrow, living in the airport! By the time he gets a flight out it will be time for him to return to Edmonton to work. UGH, what a way to spend his Christmas vacation, sitting in an airport!
My son is supposed to fly home to Montreal here on the 27th from Halifax as he works today and tomorrow.
I'm wondering if he's going to make it, even then, as his flight is by Westjet and they fly through Toronto first before coming into Montreal! Bummer, I've delayed our Xmas celebration till Monday the 29th since he was supposed to be home by then for sure, now I'm thinking we're going to be sacking Xmas and just say Happy New Year everyone. I like a white Xmas but this is not fun!
I hope all those stranded at the airports get flights out to wherever soon, even if it's just to be able to get back home!
Merry Christmas... is God trying to tell us something in this time of recession? YES, He's saying stay put at home! LOL

For those of us who don't have to travel, the quiet and serenity is awesome.
Just take a few moments to thank those who have to commute every day,and work through this.We rely on transit workers, hospital employees, police, rescue, and many others even more when things get sticky.Be patient and grateful for their services. They are dealing with the same weather as everyone else, but the are under much more stress from an increased work load, and they have to deal with a very unhappy public.
Try to imagine how the people who lived here a couple of generations ago dealt with the weather. Not much in the way of highways and even less search and rescue, police, and hospital services.Even with snow higher than our butts,we are a pretty lucky nation.

Glad to see that most of the comments don’t blame the airlines for the bad weather. However, 11 hours on the tarmac in Vancouver with the “threat” of losing their flight if they get off the plane is typical of the level of service that we are all too familiar with from Air Canada. What I don’t understand is why we accept this abysmal level of service. In the last year I have flown Air France, KLM, and Air New Zealand all of which welcome passengers with a pillow, blanket, earphones, a good meal , and friendly service at a flight cost which is typically less or comparable to that offered by Air Canada to the same destinations. And AC has the audacity to charge $2 for a pillow, $3 for earphones, and $6 for a sandwich. Not to mention the rude unprofessional behaviour of many of their employees. On Friday I flew from LA to Toronto. I had no problem with the 3 hour flight delay due to the weather in Toronto. However, we were asked to move to another gate only to be told by an AC employee that we had to leave where we then witnessed a heated argument between the employee that asked us to go to the new gate and the one who asked us to leave. For the record, this was flight 790. Then we witnessed a number of folks trying to get on our flight only to be told that it was fully booked. The level of rudeness and lack of empathy that I witnessed at that counter was astounding but not surprising. The truth is that the flight was not overbooked! We counted about a dozen empty seats on the plane. And yes, I have also been on AC flights where they ran out of food which happened to us on New Years Eve a few years ago. DISGUSTING! So what’s the solution Canada?

This is Canada. Its not like snow is a new invention for us. Sometimes it just shows up at the wrong place and time and we have to do the best we can in the circumstances. I was once snowed in at Chicago's O'Hare airport overnight. There were plenty of young children driving their parents and everyone around them over the edge. A retired teacher and her adult daughter organized an area for them in the boarding lounge, got the kids involved in games, story telling, dancing and other activities until they were ready to fall asleep. Hearing the youngsters singing and laughing instead of whining and crying was a Godsend. These women turned a bad situation around with a little imagination and involvement. We could all take a lesson. Merry Christmas to all.
