With just a few days left until Christmas, some people may still be scrambling to send out last-minute gifts. The bad news is you've already missed the deadline for regular mail. But there are still a few options left if you want those presents to make it under the tree on time -- and in one piece.
We can tell you what courier companies will charge you to get your packages there on time. However, keep in mind you must ship your package by 5:00 pm today (Dec. 22) to make sure they will arrive on time for Christmas day.
Our shipping example below was based on a 2 lb box/package leaving Toronto to Vancouver on Dec. 22. Here are the estimated rates and transit times:
FedEx
- Fri, Dec. 23 -- 10:00 am (FedEx First Overnight): $63.77.
- Fri, Dec. 23 -- 12:00 pm (FedEx Priority Overnight): $49.86.
- FedEx also offers "Next Flight" service based on availability.
Purolator
- Fri, Dec. 23 -- 9:00 am (Purolator Express 9 am): $61.59.
- Fri, Dec. 23 -- 10:30 am (Purolator Express 10:30 am): $51.16.
- Fri, Dec. 23 (Purolator Express): $39.09.
UPS
- Fri, Dec. 23 -- 9:30 am (UPS Express Early A.M.): $66.02.
- Fri, Dec. 23 -- 12:00 pm (UPS Express): $44.66.
- Fri, Dec. 23 -- 1:30 pm (UPS Express Saver): $34.57.
Canada Post
- Fri, Dec. 23 (Priority Next A.M.): $41.32.
Key points:
- The deadline has already passed for those looking to send packages by regular mail (Dec. 12 for regular parcels within Canada).
- Xpress Post was available until Dec. 21 and Priority Next A.M. is still available until today (Dec. 22).
- Courier services such as FedEx, Purolator and UPS are also accepting packages today (Dec. 22) for delivery before Christmas. They recommend that you drop off or schedule a pick up before the end of the business day
- Most courier companies charge a fuel surcharge and Canada Post charges a handling fee on duty-required or taxable items.
- Any money-back guarantees for delivery times are often suspended during the holidays.
- Some deliveries will still be made on Dec. 24 but not Christmas Day.
