Bulbs: "Perhaps they call them 'bulbs' because you have to twist them into the soil to make firm contact. Do you think?" Sounds like something that Jeff Hutcheson would say. In any case, this is not only the best time of year to plant spring flowering bulbs. It's the only time of year if you want that riot of colour in your yard that only Dutch bulbs can bring.

Of course I am talking about tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, not to mention a host of other bulbs that work quite nicely.

Keep in mind:

• Bulbs like well drained soil -- add sand.
• They should be planted three times as deep as the bulb is thick, measured from top to bottom.
• Fritillaria will keep moles away from your garden.
• Hyacinths are the most fragrant of all bulbs. Plant some up near the front door where you are greeted by their sweet fragrance as you arrive home.
• 'Minor' bulbs is a reference to the myriad of small, early flowering bulbs that really give you a lift each spring. Look for crocus, chionodoxa and scilla.

Plant away while you can and have fun painting your front yard with bulbs.
