There are many plants that 'peak' in the autumn. Fall flowering mums, New England Asters, many Rudebeckia, Sedum (Stonecrop) and even late planted pansies, as well as ornamental cabbages and kale. These are considered winter hardy in most parts of Canada.

Add to the list these items for 'fall interest' and you have a neat collection, with some creative arranging at your front door or wherever... straw, corn stalks, pumpkins and ornamental grasses.

Care for fall flowering plants is simple -- after you have planted in good quality soil be sure to water from time to time. Cool autumn temperatures can fool you into thinking that they are not drying out, but wilting leafs will soon prove that you are wrong. No need to fertilize them this time of year -- that can wait until next spring.

Above all, have fun with your selection of fall flowering plants. Be creative and involve the kids. You will be amazed at the combinations and the look that young, creative minds will come up with."
