U.S. mogul Donald Trump made a fortune by thinking big and sparing no cost to build his brand of luxury hotels. That attitude and luxury is hard to miss in Toronto's Trump International Hotel and Tower, the entrepreneur's first luxury hotel and residence in Canada.
Billed as one of the most anticipated hotel openings of 2012, this 65-storey addition to Trump's empire will hold the title of Canada's tallest residential building.
The hotel's spacious rooms are also unique for this city, according to Trump's daughter, Ivanka.
"We have the largest suites bar none in Toronto," the 30-year-old businesswoman and new mother recently told Canada AM's Marci Ien.
"Our room size starts at 530 sq. ft. and goes all the way up to the largest suite in Toronto, which is 4,000 sq. ft.," Trump said.
That bigger-is-better attitude is unmistakable in the hotel's soaring front lobby, where a 3,000-lb cherry blossom sculpture made of crystal from the Czech Republic sits in regal splendour.
In fact, more than 18,000 pieces of crystal have been worked into the hotel's interior design.
"We love the Czech Republic, where my mother comes from. They're the best in terms of making crystal," said Trump.
The hotel boasts a two-level, Quartz Crystal Spa and wellness facility sized at 1,672 square-metres (18,000 sq. ft.) and an indoor heated salt-water infinity lap pool.
Lifting the spire of the building was also the single largest lift in North America, if not the world. Weighing in at over 90 tonnes, it took more than 12 hours to lift the spire in place on the roof of the hotel.
Yet the hotel located in Toronto's financial district does not sacrifice intimacy for luxury.
"The design intent here was to feel very sumptuous but also to feel very residential. It doesn't feel like a commercial hotel. It feels warm and inviting," said Trump.
Throughout the hotel, subtle hallway chandeliers as well as the lobby's light-green onyx wall panels and laser-cut granite floors evoke a sense of understated elegance.
That subtle grandeur is found in every suite, where guests will find lavish soaker tubs, glass-enclosed rainfall showers, in-mirror TVs and marble countertops with leather finishes.
The Stock Restaurant and Lounge, located on the hotel's 31st floor, also offers a spectacular view of downtown Toronto as well as an upscale menu, an international sommelier and homemade chocolate confections.
Created by Pastry Chef David Chow, the hotel's specialty treats include salt and caramel chocolate toffee, and homemade artisanal scones with pure Valhrona chocolate hazelnut confiture.
The Trump International Hotel and Tower will not see its hard launch until April or May of 2012. For now, however, guests can sample this luxry hotel at a special promotional rate throughout February. For this month only, room rates will start from $375 from Sunday to Thursday. Rooms are available at a rate of $325 on Fridays and Saturdays.
