Close to 125 million people tuned into the Super Bowl making it the most watched TV show in American history. But it's not the plays or passes people are talking about. Joy Malbon has more on the halftime moment that stole the spotlight from Madonna.
Canada AM: Show stealer at Super Bowl?
The Super Bowl game was a nail biter, but the halftime show was a spectacle all on its own. Madonna didn't disappoint, but it was a flip of the finger by guest performer M.I.A. that has many people talking.

I thought it was a very good performance. Clearly Madonna is not as mobile. Very evident when she did the acrobatics. Looked like slow motion. Frankly, I didn't notice the finger. I saw the blur though and thought some cameraman was going to be called out. This may cause some feuding between Madonna and MIA.

Madonna's halftime show upstaged by M.I.A. middle finger

Date: Mon. Feb. 6 2012 8:41 PM ET

For all the pomp and excess of Madonna's Super Bowl halftime extravaganza a single extended middle finger by guest singer M.I.A. is likely to be the most remembered piece of the show.

The gesture, accompanied by a barely disguised expletive, came during a performance of Madonna's new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin."' At the end of her lines, M.I.A. appeared to sing "I don't give a (expletive)," although it was hard to hear clearly.

The incident was reminiscent of Janet Jackson's infamous "wardrobe malfunction" eight years ago -- a surprise risque moment in front of tens of millions of unsuspecting viewers. The brief exposure of Jackson's nipple during the 2004 halftime show raised a storm of controversy and put CBS in hot water with the Federal Communications Commission.

The Super Bowl, shown on NBC in the U.S. this year, is routinely viewed by more than 100 million Americans, the biggest TV event of the year.

"We apologize for the inappropriate gesture that aired during halftime," NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey said. "It was a spontaneous gesture that our delay system caught late."

The screen briefly went blurred after M.I.A.'s gesture in what was a late attempt -- by less than a second -- to cut out the camera shot. The NFL, which produces the show, had no immediate comment.

British singer M.I.A. is best known for her 2007 hit "Paper Planes," a Grammy nominee for record of the year that memorably features a sample of the Clash song, "Straight to Hell." It was featured on the soundtrack to the movie "Slumdog Millionaire."

Madonna had admittedly been nervous about her performance, hoping to position herself as the queen of a new generation of pop stars with an opulent show and a sharp performance that mixed her new release with more familiar songs. She seemed like Roman royalty when muscle-bound men carried her extravagant throne across the football field to the stage for her opening song, "Vogue."

Guests Cee Lo Green, Nicki Minaj and dance rockers LMFAO also appeared with Madonna. The singing and dancing on "Vogue" was smartly choreographed, as Madonna moved more deliberately -- she is 53 -- but still adroitly. She briefly appeared to stumble at one point while trying to make a step on the stage set, but recovered in time.

She let a tightrope walker make the more acrobatic moves during a performance of "Music."

Madonna carried gold pompons for a performance of her new single. Twitter was alight with questions about the vocals being lip synched or augmented by tapes, particularly during this song.

The best guest was clearly Cee Lo, who joined Madonna for the final song, "Like a Prayer." They were joined by a robed chorus in the show's most soaring performance. With a puff of white smoke, Madonna disappeared down a trap door in the stage, and lights on the field spelled out "World Peace."

The performance was also carried live on SiriusXM Radio, giving Madonna the biggest single audience of her career. For all the elaborate choreography and flashy effects, the finger incident is the more likely headline from the event.

Earlier, Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert offered some pre-game patriotism. Shelton and Lambert did a twangy duet on "America the Beautiful" and Clarkson, in a simple black dress, sang "The Star Spangled Banner" without a hitch after last year's performer, Christina Aguilera, flubbed a line.

As a male watching a hard hitting physical football game I can not think of a worse halftime performer than Madonna and the likes of her guests. I'll take Nickelbacks Grey Cup performance anyday

Much ado about nothing. Madonna's show reminded me of Gaga's shows except Gaga would pull it off with a lot more panache. A lot of hype about a boring show.

I didn't even notice the finger incident and I bet the majority fo people didn't notice it either. The media are the only ones that seem to be making a big deal about it. I am not a Madonna fan but I think she put on a great half time show. I think the media and Americans alike just like to find things that are wrong. Give it a rest.

I loved it... I'm old enough to enjoy that halftime show. The problem then had in the past is that I would even listen to who was on because I would just fall asleep. Madonna rip the runaway and so did everyone else.

I think Madonna was great and she looked amazing! Many people are saying she is too "old" and is "slowing down" but hey, we need to give her credit for puting on a spectacular show on one of the biggest stages ever!!! I don't think many people can do it! Madonna girl, YOU ROCK!!!

I thought that Madonna's performance was quite entertaining, given that she is 53 years old. I happen to be a little older than her, and exercise every day, but don't have her moves or stamina. She is a real show person and that cannot be debated. As far as the middle finger by MIA is concerned, I didn't even notice or care for that matter, although MIA should have learned from Jackson and others, that actions like that have no place and she may pay for that stupidity or brain cramp in the future.

Too much production for such a short time... rather have an entertainer just entertain me with their songs and not lip sync with so many props, extras, costumes... way over the top. As for the finger... just lack of class.

Justin and Janet would have called this a "finger malfunction".

Considering the content and choreography of this year's half-time show, the sport it's a part of along with the majority of the type of fans the show plays to, is hilarious on so many levels.

I could have sworn Madonna was singing "I'm sixty and I know it" with LMFAO.

While it's true the halftime show talent are under a microscope and should exhibit wholesome behaviour its also true that we all see worse than a middle finger everyday and it doesn't grind our lives to a halt! I did not have lofty hopes for a Madonna halftime show, but I was pleasantly surprised with her performance!

Michael Real World: Yes, of course, I did mean that Madonna was the one that copied La Liz, and it looked like she also raided MGM's prop department as well. And if Madonna was hired to do the half-time show, then why were we also subjected to those other "singers"? Obviously because Madonna can't carry, or hold the interest of an audience by herself, she requires support of a cast of thousands to divert attention from her diminishing ability.

Sandra: you mean to write "Didn't Madonna make the same entrance as Elizabeth Taylor [playing Cleopatra] in Cleopatra?" and Madge accuses Lady Gaga of plagiarism! I am just thankful we didn't get a flash of Madonna's 53-year-old bups. As for the finger, Samantha, I do wish people who swear and make rude gestures in such venues would remember that they are in a public place, and therefore show some couth in their behaviour.

That 'middle finger' was the only entertaining part of the whole show. Other than that, it was about the worst half time show ever.

Madonna is still the reigning Queen of performance artists. Gaga is great but she still is only the princess to the Queen. 15 minute show will be remembered for a LONGTIME.

Yeah, because no one has or will ever be exposed to the middle finger. Like cussing..no one does that in real life, right?

I just happened to land on that channel as Madonna was starting and I couldn't believe after 30+ years of performing, she chose some of her oldest stuff. Bor-ing! Is it just me, or is she a "has been?" I flipped channels pretty quickly.

Why bring on performers who are prone to this type of behavior? Surely you could get a half-time show that didn't consist of the kind of rude and irreverent self-promoters they seem to hire.

I also thought she was a backup singer, who or what is she anyway? As for Madonna, time to retire. she aint no Tina Turner that's for sure. Now she is worth three hundred bucks a ticket.

What a mess. Madonna's "songs" all sound pretty much the same (I decline to call them "music"), except for "Like A Prayer" which is quite beautiful. Too bad it got lost in the trashy production. But hey, isn't she the queen of trash? And didn't Elizabeth Taylor make the same entrance in the movie "Cleopatra"? She obviously needs to hide behind big production numbers, noise and gyrations so no one will notice her singing (lip syncing?) or lack of substance.

I think Madonna confirmed the title as the reigning Queen of Pop yesterday. Her performance was one of the best half time shows in a long time. I'm not sure how people think she is slowing down, I certainly couldn't do the moves she does and I'm a fit person! As for MIA, she was nearly a "flash in the pan" but she just made herself a "has been".

I would normally be concerned with kids immitating one of their favorite rap stars and flipping off everyone today with a middle finger but it's not really a concern since MIA is a washed up has-been just like Madonna. How old is he again? Fifty-What?

Since U2's performance after 9-11, the half time shows have all been second class!! Madonna's performance last night was so poor that a "middle finger" is the only thing that has made it newsworthy!!

I watched the halftime show with a group of about 12 and none of us even noticed this.
Too bad the media made such a deal about it - it was much ado about nothing before they all got in on it.

The show itself was dismal and I kept hoping it was going to get better.
Madonna appeared to be moving very slowly and looked foolish trying to do the moves of her young collaberators.
If that is all she can offer, her $300 concert tickets are not worth it, regardless of how much she mouths off about them.

Motivated by Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction several years ago, MIA is now in the news for the wrong reasons. I guess that's one way to breathe life into a sagging career. Hopefully she will just fade away...

For being in my early 20's Madonna's half time show was good. You can really tell that she is slowing down with age in her chorography. Still doesn’t give M.I.A or any body else to disgrace themselves by flaunting the finger. I believe That MIA should be charged and fined with public profanity etc... Enough is enough and somebody should step in and put there foot down on what is being displayed on our live Reality Show/ Sports. Giving the finger is not teaching our children proper attitudes towards our future!

All showbiz... knowing of Madonna's physical limits in advance, the "finger" from her colleague was intended to attract the critics/dogs away from her performance... not that there was anything wrong, but you know how the media hounds go for any weakness... so she threw them a bone... a simple case of misdirection...
