A Mexican suspect has been arrested in the brutal beating of a Canadian woman who was vacationing in a five-star Mexican hotel last week.

Sheila Nabb, a 37-year-old office manager in Calgary, and her husband Andrew were vacationing at a resort in Mazatlan when she was found beaten and bloodied in a hotel elevator last week.

On Friday, officials said that the suspect, José Ramón Acosta Quintero, is from Mazatlan. Local reports say he speaks English very well and often stays in area hotels.

The state's attorney general says the suspect will likely be charged with attempted murder, and was identified by a finger print.

The latest development comes on the same day that victim returned to Canada.

Robert Prosser, Nabb's uncle, told CTV Atlantic his niece was scheduled to arrive home in Calgary late Thursday night.

Prosser added that Nabb had been put into a medically induced coma for the journey home from Mexico.

Peter Byl, who runs Latitude Aeromedical Works, said Nabb's flight home took 3 1/2 hours.

"She did really well on the flight," Byl told The Canadian Press.

Byl's company uses a Learjet 35 aircraft to fly Canadian patients back home from desitations around the word. They operate under contract from private insurers.

Every bone in her face was broken, according to her family.

She was put into a medically-induced coma and her jaw was wired shut prior to facial reconstructive surgery. It isn't clear whether Nabb had that surgery in Mexico.

There were also reports Nabb had contracted pneumonia.

Mexican surgeons originally said it would be at least a month before Nabb could fly home.

Earlier this week she was brought out of the first medically-induced coma, and began to breathe on her own. She was responsive and recognized her husband and father-in-law, who were by her side in hospital, according to a statement from the family.

Mexican officials stated that the beating was captured by a video surveillance camera in the hotel's elevator. They had also previously said that the suspect in the video was a male of about 25.

Back in Canada, about $10,000 has been raised to help cover Nabb's medical costs. The money has been raised at the clinic where Nabb works.

"We've really been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from friends to strangers to you name it," said Jocelyn Tindall, who is Nabb's co-worker at Active Back to Health Centre.

She added that dental work had been offered free of charge to Nabb.

"Now she's back in Canada, so we're very happy to hear that," said Tindall.

The people saying to stay away from Mexico must cower in their basements, shaking when their doorbell or phone rings, and have probably never been there. No more dangerous then any place in Canda. Just like any where - use common sense.(Something most people are lacking these days - for those who don't know what that is - look it up)
Just got back and going again in April....

I am so glad some people have started to ask the questions our one sided media has refused to!!!!!! This story is beyond suspicious. Why was she out of her room when she was. If there was a knock on her door she is no safer answering at a five star hotel then she would be at her own home at odd hours of the night.

I have been taking my family to just about every area of Mexico for the past 15 years. My daughter needed an emergency appendectomy when in Mazatlan and received excellent care far beyond, what I am sorry to say she would have received in Edmonton. In 2011 we had approximatelyd 47 homicides in Edmonton and I dont how many assaults and I have not seen any cries for anyone to avoid Edmonton. Wait until the facts are known before making judgements.

First of all my best wishes to Sheila and I wish a miraculous and speedy recovery. I was just talking to my husband that I bet anything that the police would soon be saying they caught the person. Surprise they just said it and even though this person may have prior incidents probably was never even there. The governments do this to shut our people up and make us think that they have done a wonderful job in capturing the criminal. This is so they no longer have to worry about losing the millions of dollars they make off of tourists. I am half latino and so is my family and husband. I am used to how these corrupt governments work and I wish the Canadian government would step up and stop importing things from these countries that have no reason to change. We are supporting drug lords because those who think the government of Mexico is not involved in the cartel has not been reading up recent history. One thing that we ignore what is happening in that country such as the incredible injustices of Juarez but another thing that we keep supporting this corruption by visiting this country. Yes I know there are good people in Mexico but a lot are living in a bubble or are too scared to make a change with the inhumanity going on and so are those who think everything is great in Mexico. How could anyone even compare Mexico to Canada as far as crime rates or how safe it feels to walk around at night?

All of you have to wake up and smell the coffee. This story makes absolutely no sense. What was she doing wondering around the hotel at 3:00 Am? No one beats you up for nothing, she wasn't even robbed. There is more to this story then we know. Until all the facts come out stop blaming Mexico.

I agree with most people who say there is more to this story. The fact is there does seem to be a lot of Canadians getting attacked down in Mexico. To me it's a very dangerous Country .The drug gangs have made life impossible for the average Mexican. I for one will not go there. On top of the violence you also have many corrupt Judges & police. We don't hear as many robberies & murders in Florida. Yes we do have some of the same problems in Canada but Mexico is on a much larger scale

It's great that the Riu has cameras, they'll catch the guy rather than waste time on other people. But why was no one looking at monitors? Hotels in Canada and elsewhere have people monitoring the cameras. I recall 25 years ago when someone aggressively tried my door in a hotel. I called front desk to find that staff had already been dispatched and were at my door while the desk people were telling me that. It was a drunk woman who was at the wrong end of the hall. The staff would have stopped someone with ill intent asap.Mexican hotels need to get on it. We expect that service from a 4 or 5 star.

I think that both Canada and the US should identify drug use as treasonous and treacherous behavior, clearly stating that as soon as one drug is legalized, then criminals will move on to another. While doing that, the costs of drug use to health and social services should be clearly identified. It's possible that those costs will rival the cost of services to the elderly that everyone is so concerned about. At least those costs will be a huge eye opener. Until now, the end user has escaped responsibility for anything. That has to end. Start with educating teachers and the media. Then move on to properly tested ads on TV.

I am alive today because I was in a Mexican hospital. When my family wanted me back in Canada my response was that I did not want to die in the parking lot waiting to get treatment. My brother in law received more attention, tests and information in 5 days than he had received in 18 months in Canada.
The Mexico bashing is coming from those that have never crossed the border but derive their opinions from the slanted media making their money from sensationalism. Do a google on "homicides LA" and see what comes up. We have 75 year old women that regularly drive across the border on their own or with friends.
Mexico is a fine place to be - except for the skiing.

I believe that the continued bad press will not bode well for the Mexican tourist industry, and rightly so. There have been entirely to many beatings, robberies, rapes, and God know what else to the tourists whose only crime is to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Yes, it could happen anywhere at any time, but it appears Mexico has made a new occupation of terrorizing tourists for their money. I hope that the tourist industry dries up completely in Mexico.

Slowly but surely, the tourist economy of Mexico is dying. If you look at a map of the unsafe red zones in Mexico, it's inevitable that the cartels will eventually target the south east which will include Cancun, Mayan Riviera, Playa Del Carmen, etc. It's just a matter of time. Something is wrong when you have to look at a map to find the so-called safe zones to plan your vacation. Boycott Mexico!

Dave, are you suggesting that the gov't of Canada should start/keep issuing travel warnings for Canadians to be aware of Canadians, Tourists and anyone else who may get attacked in Mexico by a non-Mexican? - Sounds silly right? Give your head a shake! Remember those pamphlets that Quebec issued to immigrants? The ones that taught immigrants how to behave in Canada? I'm thinking the gov't and foreign countries should start issuing these to their own citizens as well. Title: "This is how and how you don't behave abroad" This all inclusive trips that Canadians take anywhere with the all you can drink are the problems. After a few every Canadian thinks they're back in their towns thinking that they can roll in to these towns and offend locals with their 1st world mentality.

I have to agree with David, when are people going to take responsibility for themselves. Some of the comments on here really show the hypocrisy of some Canadians. It's not unusual to see 4 or more shootings in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton etc in one week. I love Mexico and her people and have been treated royally each time there. The Mexico bashing is uncalled for coming from the Country of Robert Picton, The highway of tears, and all the other various celebrities of death like Olsen, Bernardo, and that Canadian airforce hero serial killer. People condemned Mexico and then found out it was probably another tourist. The dental and medical there is just as good as in Canada as well.

To the comment from "David", who really cares if the canadian taxpayers paid for her flight back to Canada. YES, they went at their own risk, did she ask for it? Does anyone ask for this to happen? As a Canadian taxpayer, there are multiple places that our tax dollars go that they should not but come on, this lady needed help and anyone who has a heart would be glad to see that the tax dollars were actually going to help someone that really needs it and not to fly politicians on a working vacation or welfare recipients that know they will get money just because they don't feel like going out to find a job! I would be glad to hear that our government would step in and lend a hand to someone in need! Who knows, it could have easily been you, a member of your family or one of your friend. Then it would not be such a bad thing would it??

After reading the last few comments, I feel I have to express my own feelings about this story. We spent two months near Lake Chapala in Mexico and had a wonderful time. Unfortunately, I broke my right arm half way through our vacation and was taken to a private clinic by a very nice policeman. There I received excellent care and after several X-rays, two visits by a specialist, who had to come from Guadalajara, a cast and at least 5 office visits, was charged a total of $200.00. A tourist visiting Canada would have been charged ten times as much. Also I am wondering why nobody has asked the husband what his wife was doing and who she was with during the night while he slept in his room. I might be oldfashioned, but my husband always knows where I am during the night, especially when we are in a foreign country.

I am a Canadian, living in Mexico with my Mexican husband with a baby on the way. I have received excellent health care and not once have felt in danger of my safety. Sadly, when i go back home to Edmonton for visits, I usually witness some sort of violence on the street and never feel completely at ease walking alone at night. People who have never been to Mexico(or left their safety bubble of Canada or resort holidays) sound very ignorant when they say things against the country. I'm not saying it's a perfect country, no country is, it has it's faults. However, please think before you jump on the band wagon of bashing Mexico and it's people. I am very sorry for the lady who got beaten and wish her well. As I am sorry for all the other senseless beatings that take place in Canada everyday. Horrible people are everywhere.

Glad to hear Sheila is recovering enough to be sent home, and hope her recovery continues to go well!@ David - have you never heard of something called travel medical insurance? It will usually pay for you to be flown home, for care at home, as soon as is medically safe. And to quote directly from the government travel warnings site "While most major tourist areas have not been affected by the extreme levels of violence in the northern border region, it is highly advisable to travel to Mexico by air." All of which this couple appears to have done. I was in Mexico recently, and found people to be amazing and wonderful, and my friends and I had a fantastic holiday. With reasonable caution, repect and awareness, travel to almost anywhere can be safe. Unfortunately, horrible things can happen - anywhere and anytime. This is not a Mexico thing, it's a life thing.

I suggest everyone watch this story very closely before they start making anti-Mexico comments. There is so much information out here and in the Canadian news media. First, she was refused by two clinics - guess what, it was clinics not hospitals and they weren't capable of handling the injuries! Not that they didn't care. Secondly, the guy who came forward later that was beaten last year was staying at the Riu Resort but was not there when he was beaten. Plus, there is nothing to his story that confirms he was beaten by a Mexican or what his circumstances were. You need to read more into these stories and stop taking the sensational Canadian Media's lazy journalism at face value. Check out the Mazatlan Messenger for the latest on Sheils's story. Wishing her the best on her long road ahead.

Ann, there is a vast difference between the private clinic which the Ontario couple were taken and the Sharp Hospital where she was treated, which is a top notch hospital. The decision to take her back to Canada was likely made by the doctors, her family and the insurance company. The amount of treatment that Shiela Nabb will have to undergo until she is fully healed is enormous. If it is safe for her to travel it would be best if she was flown back to Canada. We all wish her a full recovery.

AM
said

@ Jenn Wake - Why was she flown back to Canada? Probably becuase her insurance provider & doctors decided it was better for her to be treated in Canada as opposed to Mexico.
How does this complicate things? She had come out of the induced coma previously & there was likely time for the Mexican police to speak to her.
The RCMP has no grounds to investigate this case unless they are invited by the Mexian authorities and it is unlikely that will happen.
There is no indication the suspect is Canadian or that he has even been identified.
Stop sensationalizing the story. The truth is bad enough.

Its good to hear that she is back in Canada and can get better heath care. I get the feeling the Mexican police and the hotel security are just not interested in doing their job in finding the low life who did this. Just because the attacker was dressed like a tourist dose not mean that they were a tourist. Ever hear of criminals wearing a disguise. If it was another tourist they would have been able to track their movements to their room with their CCTY cameras in the hall ways and would know who that parson was since you need photo I.D. to check in to these resorts. Most 5 star resorts have on sight laundry mats for their guests. So it is conservable that someone’s clothes went missing out of the dryer or when their room was being cleaned by staff. People get things stolen by hotel staff all the time, and are told not to leave valuables or money laying around in the rooms wile they are outside for that reason. The rooms have a safe that you can lock them in because the staff are thieves and will even steal expensive cloths that they cant get in Mexico and sell them for what ever they can get. A friend of mine and his wife went to Mazatlan 3 years ago and had some of their clothes and shoes stolen from their room. I think this attack was an inside job and done by one of the staff. Steal some cloths, disguise yourself as a tourist, wonder around at night and Find a rich looking tourist who is alone and beat and mug them.

Driving from Mazatlan airport one passes the local government "all inclusive resort". It features guard towers on the corners of razer wire topped highwalls. The cuisine selection is limited however to small portions of rice and beans. No view,no airconditioning and the selection of bedding unfortunately is limited to bunkbeds. Other guests represent many of the local gang scene. I'm thinking the perp if caught is going to have a lot of time to ruminate over his decision making process.

It is a sad thing that happened to Sheila and I wish her good luck in her recovery. But my question is, who paid for the airplane back to Canada. I hope it was not the Canadian taxpayer, for there were travel warnings, put out by the Government on travel to Mexico. They went at their own risk to vacation in Mexico and Canadians should not be held responsible. If one ignores advice, then they should take the responsibilty for their actions.

All details about this story are very strange. Clearly want to hide something. Why was she flown back to Canada? Who decided? This complicates the case thousands times more. Mexican police is now completely helpless to get Sheila's version of the attack.Only if and when RCMP get Sheila's version of the story, then they might have some grounds to arrest him. Again, only if he is Canadian and if he flew back to Canada.

Earlier this week I heard another couple came forward who'd been to the same resort a few years ago - the husband was attacked on his way to the restroom. When they asked the hotel staff to get the to a hospital, they were refused and taken to a private clinic instead. They had to pay more than $4,000. for treatments. It's a scam, is what it is - that's probably why at first the doctors were advising the family she couldn't be transported back to Canada - they wanted the cash. Disgusting.
