The brother of a 37-year-old Canadian woman who was badly beaten at a five-star resort last week in Mexico is defending the victim's husband, saying a statement by Mexican officials could be misinterpreted to suggest wrongdoing on his part.

In an email statement, Paul Giles described Sheila and Andrew Nabb as a "loving couple" and said Andrew is "innocent of any form of abuse."

"Andrew was initially questioned by authorities immediately after this tragic event and was soon after released when it became apparent that he was innocent of any form of abuse," Giles said in the email.

"Anyone who has ever met Andrew will immediately disregard any and all accusations against him. They are the most loving couple that I know, and anyone that knows them would agree."

Giles said he felt pressured to release the statement after Mexican authorities issued a statement in Spanish that could be translated to say "domestic violence" when they meant "internal violence."

The press release from the Sinaloa state government was referring to the violent incident being internal to Mexico.

Mexican police still don't have a suspect even though they have a surveillance video of the attack.

The video shows Nabb, who remains in a Mexican hospital after suffering multiple facial fractures, being beaten in a hotel elevator by someone who appears to be another guest in his mid-20s.

Tom Walters told CTV's Canada AM in a telephone report Thursday that the video shows the attacker "striking and stomping" Nabb in the elevator.

No one is in custody and police have yet to identify the man in the video, although they said the suspect isn't dressed like a hotel staff member or a local resident, meaning he may be another tourist.

Police have taken statements from nine people in the case, including a guest with bruises on his hand and injuries to his chin.

Nabb, raised in Nova Scotia but a resident of Calgary, had been vacationing with family members at the five-star resort hotel in Mazatlan at the time of the attack.

Officials said that if the man in the video returns home to his country of origin, they are confident he can be brought back through extradition treaties if necessary.

Her husband, Andrew Nabb, was interviewed by police but ruled out as a suspect, Walters said, indicating evidence shows he was sleeping in his room when the attack occurred.

Andrew Nabb also watched the video and couldn't identify the attacker, he said.

Police are waiting for Sheila Nabb's condition to improve to get a statement. She came out of a medically induced coma earlier this week but she's still too weak to talk, Walters said.

Nabb was set to undergo surgery on her facial fractures this week, but her doctors have postponed the procedure because of the illness.

The setback became apparent when doctors were preparing to remove a breathing tube in her neck, Nabb's family said.

Once awake, she recognized her husband and appeared lucid. She was also able to respond to questions, brother Paul Giles said in a statement.

Walters also said the media in Mazatlan seem to be more concerned about the "black eye" Mazatlan is receiving over the attack rather than the incident itself, calling it a "big fuss."

"The one thing that really has struck us here over the last couple of days that we've been in Mazatlan is how quiet it is for January," Walters said.

"This is not a place where the tourism business is doing particularly well at the moment," he said, adding local "authorities" seem to be more worried about the impact on the region's reputation.

An Ontario man from Fergus told CTV News Wednesday he will never return to Mexico after being brutally beaten outside a restaurant near the same resort a year ago.

Scott Giddy was also the victim of a scam at a local medical clinic he was first taken to by a taxi driver where he spent 45 minutes, and was then forced pay a $4,700 bill on a credit card before being permitted to leave.

He and his wife, Sarah Giddy, said when he was finally taken to a hospital the family was harassed by the facility's money collectors to pay a $45,000 medical bill or that Scott's treatment would end.

Why do people keep saying this could happen in Calgary? Of course there is the chance it could happen in Calgary, Toronto or some small Canadian town. But I think the point here is that crime in Mexico happens way too often.

I can understand people not wanting to make prejudicial assumptions and many of these comments here are ignorant at best and blatently racist at worst. That's disappointing to see. But I also don't think people should be dismissive of the fact that there have been too many Canadians killed or injured during their travels to Mexico.

No one can truthfully say Mexico is no more perilous for Canadians than any other country.

At least a dozen Canadians have been killed or injured in Mexico since 2000.

During the same time period in Cuba not one Canadian has been killed or injured.

Hawaii is somewhere in between.

Well, we just came back from Mazatlan after one month and have been going there for the past 22 years, and have never had any problems. The Riu will not let anyone onto the property unless the person is staying there, so whoever beat this poor girl is most likely a guest and WHEN the guy is caught, he is going to have a nice timeshare at the Mazatlan Federal prison for the next 5 years. For those who have never been to Mazatlan, there are several types of Police in Mazatlan....Tourist police, Federal and Municiple as well as the Army and Navy. Of course crime can happen anywhere in Mazatlan, but if you don't do stupid things or wonder down side roads late at night, then your vacation will be good. As for any Canadians killed or shot in Mexico, they are involved with the drug trade and if you screw with a cartels way of making money, then you will get a bullet.
So, I fell very safe in Mazatlan and will return many more times before I retire and live in Mazatlan. Just a matter of time before the Whole story emerges and the perpetrator is caught, convicted and jailed.

The video of the attack shows a man dressed as a tourist. Meaning non-Mexican.

Let's face facts.. the country is not Disney Land and it is only the warm weather and suntanning that people from Canada go for ... as for the violence increasing .. fact is fact and yes it is on the rise. Knowing you have no avenue "if" you are involved in some level of violence is key.. don't go there if you think you will have justice on your side if something happens.. because a holiday is one thing, ignorance of the aftermath of dealing with a country with no diplomacy is key.. when you come back from being in a country rife with drug cartels and terrorism don't expect to use the same channels available here. because you're not in Kansas..

after reading this story and the comments that followed, I am truly dismayed at the level of ignorance and hate mongering and racist attitudes towards Mexico and Mexicans. My family has owned a house on the pacific side of Mexico for many many years, it is a vibrant beautiful country, with loving people and beautiful families and culture. Yes, Mexico has some dangerous parts and has a Gang problem, however do you people watch your own news???? and the level of brutality and gang issues we have here, maybe Canada should be classified as a dangerous county not worth of tourist dollars, I feel safer there then here. If you believe all the propaganda and hate mongering you just contribute to your own demise...smarten up and stop behaving like fear based Americans.

Some points to consider;
1. It is not uncommon for police to investigate crimes prior to declaring who is guilty - in Canada and in Mexico
2. Would it be possible guests in an all-inclusive may have over-consumed alcohol and problems arose?
3. Based upon limited amount of facts available - numerous commenters have jumped to massive conclusions.
4. Are any commenters joining a media rush? Seems so.

Went to Honolulu in November. A Canadian tourist was on an elevator The door opened, the man was punched square in the chops and robbed. Didn't read about that in any Canadian news. I think baby boomers are looking to retire and at 13 mexican pesos to 1 Canadian dollar Mexico would be a great place to spend or increase your retirement dollars. I think some people would rather spread fear and have retirees hide in their basements and spend their money at home. (Canada or US). Mexico warm and friendly all year long.

This is to show that Mexico is a country that doesnt deserve tourism business and money. This has always been a violent and aggressive nation that loves to resort to violence whenever they can. I dont want to be judgemental but the truth in the matter is that most people there have no remorse whats so ever and no compassion. I dont even know how a country like this is even part of NAFTA. Its garbage. I would definately not recommend anyone from going there. This is precisely why I never go there. I can easily go other parts of the world that are even much nicer then Mexico for vacation. There are many beautiful countries out there. Mexico is just 1. I really feel for the family that has to go through this tragic incident and my condolences go out to Sheila Nabb and her family. Hope her recovery is a smooth and quick one.

After reading some of these posts, I am actually embarrassed to be a Canadian, I cannot believe how many small minded people we have in our country, as well as the one sided Canadian media coverage of this event. I feel for the woman that was beaten, but the fact is if this would have happened to her in Calgary it wouldn't have made top story on the local news let alone the national. If it turns out that it is a Canadian or American tourist that did the beating, no one will apologize to the mexican people for damaging their tourism industry. The Canadian media also managed to drag in past events with partial information in order to add more shock factor to the story. The people getting hurt when this type stuff get blown out of proportion are the ordinary mexican citizens just trying to get ahead.

I have had vacations at many different parts in Mexico and work with people from Mexico. The drug trade has been escalating in many regions and these drug dealers and those associated with the trade are some of the most cruel you will ever see. Check out a web site called Blog Del Narco and you'll see what I mean. It's a beautiful country and with some awesome people, but it is also poor and corrupt and there are people who will shoot you for a few pesos.

People are literally being murdered and be-headed by the thousands in Mexico each year. To compare the violence occurring in Mexico due to the drug cartels to violence that occurs in Canada is absurd. It is a dangerous place, and those committing the crimes don't care if you are a tourist or not, they make money from drugs being smuggled into the U.S. and Canada not through tourism.

You can find danger or risk anywhere you vacation “but” Mexico has been degrading into a safety hazard for years. We liked the Mayan Riviera for years but it got unsafe off the resort grounds and we got tired of the “White Money” (Cocaine cartels) tours. We decided to try a 5 star Riu Jalisco in Puerto Vallarta and all in one day were poisoned because Riu filled premium liquor bottles with toxic local moonshine for profits, ended up in the hospital, and a lady with us was sexually assaulted in the stair case on the way to her room by the guy who supervised the Kids Pool!. Police did nothing. It’s sobering to see beach vendors pumping drugs in their arms next to the Riu, and then making another round at guests for trinkets. Unaware tourists bumble on like lambs to slaughter. And it’s gotten much worse in 7 years…. Just say NO to Mexico.

Similarly spent the last 7 vacations in Cuba but since Fidel faded the police state has developed cracks. Economic hardships have spread with massive government resort layoffs in 2010 and there is more angry envy against tourists. The population has less fear of the Police which translates into more tourist crime and resorts are no longer safe zones. As much as I like the Cuban people, I can’t expose my family to escalating risk in Cuba and will not return. Florida & Negril Jamaica feels much better these days.

I was at the resort when this beating occured. I hope sheila has a speedy recovery. But there is one question i have why was she out at 2 am in the morning when her husband was sleeping? There is a lot of holes in this whole story. I was there for a week and never felt unsafe. But I was always with my husband and would never venture off at 2 in the morning for sure by myself. I Do think there is more to this story than what meets the eye. No one deserves a beating for any reason but i am not convinced this has anything to do with the resort or mexico.

I have no doubt that Mexico is pretty safe if you go to an all-inclusive, guarded resort and don't wander outside of the compound and mix with the local residents.

My question is, who would want to vacaction in a place like that? Also, who wants to support a country with systemic corruption and lawlessness?

My wife and I have travelled all over the world, but we have no interest in Mexico as it is today.

Canadians: First of all Mexicans don't want you there. Second of all, you should stop attributing every crime to the drug lords, because not all crimes are committed by the drug lords. Mexicans never stay at hotels for tourists like that, even the more well off ones. So, it was most likely another tourist staying there, either American or Canadian, definitely not a Mexican I can tell you that.

I think Corry Todd should do a little homework too, before he or she continues to paint the whole of Mexico with his or her ultra large brush. For sure there are parts of Mexico which are unsafe, but there are parts of Mexico where kidnappings and homicides aren't as commonplace as spots such as Winnipeg or Vancouver. Stats are available online. Just google it.

We are Albertans who live in Mazatlan 5 months a year in a house in a mixed residential area of local Mazetlecos and Canadians and Americans. It is not a gated community. We go about our daily business without fear, shopping, dining, attending concerts, going to movies, etc. We often walk to the supermarkets (each about 30 minutes one-way) by either using the mainstreet or through a shortcut through other residential areas during the day. During the evening we go for a walk through the tourist area or to see a movie. We feel safer here than in our home city.

Again, opinions are all over the map on this subject. This young lady no matter where she was staying did not deserve this fate and the perp who committed this awful crime deserves to be put away for a long time. As for all the comments regarding travel to Mexico, have you ever travelled to LA, Houston, Miami or for that matter Toronto? This could have happened anywhere and is being singled out because it was Mexico.
As for Sue's comment regarding Albertans, it was totally uncalled for and she should remember Alberta attracts people from all over the country. She should get out from the "rock" she calls home.

Of course the Mexicians are going to blame the husband. Tourism is their main "bread and butter"...if this comes out that this was not a domestic act then its someone on the resourt or even a mexican citizen slipped into the hotel, they're going to cover this up anyway they can.

This is what they're doing too. Look at the couple who was murdered a few years back - while attending their daughter's wedding. What ever happened with that????

I will never ever go to Mexico ever again. Canadians should boycot this country. Geeze, keep your money and go to Califorina or better yet, Hawaii.

I for one am getting tired of hearing the Mexican authorities shifting the blame for the assault and murder of Canadian tourists. The truth is the authorities, especially the police, are both inept and corrupt. The drug cartels run the country. And please don't tell me how much safer Mexico is than some Canadian cities. The last time I looked, people here weren't preying on tourists. My wife and I have been to Mexico 5 times now and we've enjoyed each trip. But things are getting too crazy now. If you're beaten in Mexico, you'll be scammed twice: first by inept cops who just don't care and second by "good Samaritans"who will take you to an unlicensed medical clinic (where you may be shaken down and even threatened if you don't pay up) instead of a real hospital. There's a whole world of safer resort areas out there - - Cuba and most of the Caribbean, for example. That's where we're heading in future, regardless of what the Mexican authorities say or do. I urge all Canadians to do the same!

I find it extremely hard to draw any conclusions on this case. Has the media been over-sensationalizing several aspects of the story (except for the injuries to this unfortunate victim)? Have the authorities really been doing any proper investigating? Can they be trusted? Every tidbit of information has been exploited to sensationalize the story, but very little has been done to get to the truth and / or solve the crime.

I hope this young lady makes a fuul recovery. I hope her family (and husband) find the strength to get through this. I hope justice is done, and the real truth comes out, but I won't hold my breath on the last item!

I think TravelingGal needs to go to Mexico in hopes that she is robbed, beaten, scammed and abducted in order for her to understand and fully realize that Mexico is an extremely dangerous country to visit. Maybe then she'll quit babbling on about her uneducated opinion. All one needs to do is to look back over the past few years and see the rise in crime, rape, kidnapping, extortion and murder generally targeted towards tourists. I for one will never choose Mexico as a destination just to save a few bucks. Instead I'll gladly pay a bit extra for peace of mind and security to a country that has taken steps to prevent fraud and corruption. Taxi drivers that will not take you to a hospital after being beaten only to be raped financially and threatened by local clinic's "collectors" is unacceptable yet the Mexican authorities have done nothing to stop the practice. So why give them your hard earned money? Let's face it. If your Nike's cost more than most people over there make in 6 months, may be a good idea to choose another vacation destination because as soon as you land, you are a potential target. Also, if you can't drink the water without getting seriously ill, well, enough said. My name is Corry Todd and that's right! I said it!

Well done statistics don't lie (shoddy ones do though). In 2011, 6 Canadians were murdered in Mexico versus 1.6 million Canadian tourist visits. Not exactly the outrageously dangerous place that the media and posters would like to present. The fact is that Mexico is a developing country with some very dangerous areas especially due to the drug trade. However, there are some dangerous areas in Canadians cities that most people would not go walking around in especially in the night. But still we go down to vacation and act as if we are in our back yard and carry expensive cameras and jewelry and flaunt our wealth. We get drink and stay out at night and lt our guard down. THIS NOT CANADA! But nor is it some completely out of control murder state. The fact is that you can travel to Mexico and be relatively safe but it is a developing and quite poor country so use some common sense. Unfortunately we often leave that at home.

Sue: We were in Alberta and travelled many miles within the province last year and I can honestly say I came across no "ugly" people. In fact it was the opposite. One man even went way out of his way to help us in Calgary , so I totally disagree with your comment. As far as Mexico goes - we will not vacation there at all and wouldn't even consider it until they get the drug gangs under control. Pat: The lady was in the resort area. The police in this story did not say it was definitely a tourist but they believe it may be because of the manner of dress he was wearing. We will only know for sure when the culprit is finally caught.

This incident may well be an outlier. In fact I'm sure it is. Millions of tourist visits, a few nasty incidents like this one which appears to be the work of another vacationer. By the way the Riu has a large contingent of Mexican vacationers, so don't just think Canuck or American here. The real concern I have is the aftermath of any thing that might go wrong. Mexico has a slow moving and often corrupt justice system. Get caught up in it and you can spend months or years trying to prove your innocence. That aside Mazatlan tourism has been a circling turd for a number of years now. This is just one more black mark to go with the drug murders that too frequently occur in full sight of tourists. It was just such an event last year that is used as a reason that almost all the cruise ships have avoided Mazatlan, even staying 2 days at neighbouring Cabo then sailing right past Mazatlan for PV.Sadly the humble people of Mazatlan suffer twice, firstly by way of the unending violence in the colonies and secondly by loss of income opportunities as tourism dries up.

The hotel first tried pinning it on the husband but now that there is evidence that he was alseep in the room that now a week later they have checked the surveilance tape and saw that it was another tourist!! give me a break! also the fact that they can't seem to identify the guys face but can identify the style of cloths!! Just because someone was dressed like a tourist dose not mean that they were tourist. Ever hear of criminals wearing a disguise. The Mexican police either know more then what they are telling or they are incompetent. Do they have a picture of the attackers face? What was the motive? Was she mugged for her money and jewelry? Most 5 stare resorts have on sight laundry mats. It is conservable that someone clothes when missing out of the dryer wile UN attended. or when their room was being cleaned by staff. People get things stolen by hotel staff all the time, and are told not to leave valuables or money laying around in the rooms wile they are outside. The rooms have a safe that you lock them in. A friend of mine and his wife went to Mazatlan 3 years ago and his new pair of sandals that he bought in Canada went missing on the 4th day and his wife lost a shirt and a pair of shoes. If you connect the dots it all add up.

When it was not forth coming, he beat her.By the way.....the resorts are Mexican owned.....not American or Canadian. The exception might be ownership from Spain. If you have any doubts about the violence in Mexico re: the drug cartels......go to "Borderland Beat".....a website devoted to the horrific crimes committed in Mexico. It's not just drugs.....it's now become extortion; kidnapping; protection money from business's....fleecing the tourists in any way possible; phoney traffic violations, etc.e tc. etc.Mexico is now a state/country of mini-anarchy. The Navy or Military have been deployed in all 32 states in order to control crime. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes because they live on drug routes; thousands of orphaned children because their parents have been brutally killed. My fellow country men & women , when are you going to wake up and face the fact-s - Mexico is not a safe and welcoming place to take a vacation ! and has not been for some time .i have been advocating a total boycott of Mexico -- to anyone who would listen -- since the slaughter of 2 of our fellow Canadian citizens , Dominic & Nancy Ianiero back in February of 2006 .The Mexican government and locals do not , respect us or appreciate our patronage , yet you people still insist on booking your vacations to go there ????On the record : i would not go there if one of you paid the whole trip , plus a salary for the time spent there ,not out of fear , but on principal , due to the awful treatment of many of our fellow countrymen .I also have to seriously question ( wonder ) why our -- allegedly intelligent -- government has not issued a total travel ban to this country by now ?? and it's not just because of this latest incident , but the whole state of the situation down there period .Makes me wonder if money is coming back up here through a back door or something , otherwise it just doesn't make any sense not to put a ban in place .???

Hmmm, has the "other tourist" departed back home? Did they check the entire guest list at the resort? If they want to ditch the black eye Mzatlan is getting, maybe get off their duffs and solve the crime already. Good grief! Wouldn't checking reort video surveillance be your FIRST aim at catching who did this?I'm betting if it was another tourist - they have gone home by now - they will have figured out she didn't die and they are in deep doo doo.

My only thought on this is how is the location (Mexico) even relevent in the situation for anyone to comment on. It happened in an elevator at a resort that could be ANYWERE, including Cuba. People get beat up all the time in Canada...shot and killed, stabbed...does that stop you from going to Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto etc? Thought not. Before you condemn the ENTIRE COUNTRY give it some thought. Plus until they know all the details, like motivation etc, all you armchair prosecutors should keep your suggestions for punishment at bay. Who knows, maybe she was drunk and decided to head down the bar after her husband was asleep, got on the elevator and pushed all the floor buttons (hahaha funny drunk move) and sent the psycho tourist she had the misfortune and bad timing to be on there with over the edge. Not her fault and no one ever deserves a beating of that magnitude (except child molestors, who should be beaten like that every day while they rot in prison) but just saying, until you know the circumstances don't just assume. You just never know with anyone, anywhere

A little note to Annie .... I prbably know a lot more about politics and life for that matter, however, we seem to be able to turn a blind eye when it comes to Mexico and that little tourist trap.Restrict travel to Mexico ... very simple ... hey, if you love the place so much, perhaps you should move there or maybe even better, take a trip and you know ... like the birds ...

@ Veronica: Most of the resorts are owned by American and Canadian companies. You are right. There is no reason to fund drug cartels.

Anything the Mexican authorities say i would take with a grain of salt.Too many stories of tourists "falling or jumping" off balconies over the years with injuries unlikely to happen from a fall.

Nice to see the majority of comments finally admitting Mexico to be a dangerous place with plans never to return. A few years ago, most people would be defending the country saying stuff like "if you're smart and aware of your surroundings, you'll be okay". Common sense has prevailed!

Why do people keep going back there... You must have a death wish or something. I will never understand. Tourist or local, does it really matter who the killer is?Too many Canadians are being killed in Mexico, yet so many go back. Bunch of idiots...I'll stick with Cuba. How many Canadians have been killed in Cuba recently?? Thought so..

Highground the US embargo on Cuba has nothing to do with tourism. It has to do with the Cuban dictatorship under Castro expelling the crooked crime motivated American mafia, wealthy Americans and getting rid of a corrupt government. You need a history lesson. Mexico and Cuba are not remotely related. Americans cannot travel to Cuba as it is against the law. If they do they can face huge fines. Some travel via Canada to avoid getting caught and Cuba does not stamp passports. Cuba is a wonderful country and the people are hardworking and friendly. Crime is simply not tolerated and the resorts are great no matter how many stars because they are free of arrogant Americans.

Hey Austin. Remember the off duty cop from Quebec who was beaten in Cancun about a year ago. The attackers were Canadians in that case too. It is not unprecedented. Mexico can be dangerous for sure. People get robbed, but this was not a robbery. Women have been raped, but there is no evidence of sexual assault here. People have been caught in the crossfire of gang shootouts, but this was not a gang shoot out. What happened in unrelated cases tell you nothing about what happened in this case. This case tells you why I don't like all inclusive resorts, particularly cheaper ones. Four words: All you can drink.

Is anyone building a resort in Somalia? We Canadians are so long-suffering and niave I'm sure a bunch would flock there for some sun too. The issue isn't just that crimes occur, but all that happens afterwards while Mexico worries more about their reputation than the people who go there and support the economy. Don't forget that they openly implicated two totally innocent girls from northern Ont in a murder a few years back. Good job CTV.

The arrogant and judgemental opinions expressed by some people on this forum is unbelievable. Based on the published informations, this specific attack has the signature of an arrogant, drugged/drunk, highly overconfident American or Canadian tourist. On the other hand, except the beating part, the story of the guy from Ontario does not have a lot in common with this story. The Ontario guy doesn't say much about what happened before the attack. He may have been beaten because of his arrogant attitude. I do not see anything wrong with the cost of the clinic. Any foreign tourist in Canada or USA would have been asked to show money first too and it may have been $47K instead of $4,700.

So Sue would like to 'pinch' the lights out of Albertans...can't say that i have ever heard of that technique but I think 'pinching' versus 'punching' would be no contest...In any case, I hope the slimebucket that did this to Ms. Nabb is incarcerated in a Mexican prison for a very long time. BTW Sue, get some professional help with your anger issues, there are many great people from all parts of the world, Alberta included!

You could not pay me to go to Mexico. I don't want to give my hard earned money to fund, in any way, these resorts that are owned by the drug cartel. The police are crooked, it's a dangerous place, you're totally on your own just riding on luck that nothing horrible will happen to you. No thanks.

I am wondering why another tourist would want to beat up a fellow tourist. It doesn't sound like the victim was involved in any nefarious activities. Why was she the target. Hard to believe it could just be random violence with someone getting his jollies by beating the crap out of a person in a hotel elevator. Was he looking for money and she didn't have any? Was it a sexual assault and she resisted?

Its time to go back to Cuba. When I asked a waiter in Varadaro, Cuba what happens to a person who robs someone here.. How much jail time will they have to do lets say robbing someone with a knife. He said you don't do much jail time here in Cuba, you just disappear. No one will bother you as a tourist here.Toronto, Ontario

@ bradin780 Did you bother to do any research before you commented? 15 Canadians have been murderd in Mexico since 2006. 35,000 people have been killed in mexico due to the drug war so you must forgive me if I don't believe the Mexican authorities when they say they think the guy looks non-local. Do your homework.

This conflicts with what I read yesterday. It said the police know who the guy is (he had bruises on his knuckles when they interviewed him) but they can't arrest him yet because under Mexican law they need a statement from Sheila first and she is too weak to give one. I will be shocked if the culprit is not a Canadian. Anyone who has actually been to Mexico (maybe a tenth of the people who comment on stories like this) has seen the disgraceful drunken way some Canadians act down there and this hotel is very popular with Canadians. This wouldn't be the first time a Canadian was victimized in Mexico by another Canadian.

I'm pretty sure that half the people who commented on this article didn't even read it. People are questioning why she went off the resort - she didn't!!! The attack happened in the elevator of the hotel on the resort, not off the resort!Stop going to Mexico? The article suggests that it was another tourist who attacked her, not a Mexican - this has nothing to do with Mexican drug cartel! Seriously, read before you comment. People made assumptions about this story before the facts were known. By all accounts, this was a random act of another tourist, which means that this could have happened anywhere...even Canada! Stop making assumptions before you know the facts...and read the story before you make stupid statements.

They are not releasing the video (albeit it would be hard to watch), but, they just say, wasn't dressed like a local, it was another tourist. Is that right? And we should believe those cops why? Given the story by the Fergus couple this morning, anyone going to Mexico should be afraid of getting bashed in the head, just to be forced to pay someone money for medical treatment. You couldn't give me a free vacation to go there. No thanks.

Of course they know who this guy is. He is a Canadian tourist, but until she is strong enough to identify him, they can't charge him. So stop making stuff up. He will rot in jail here for a long time, and learn a very big lesson about life. It isn't like the cushy Canadian jails.

Do you honestly believe the Mexician authorities will arrest anyone remotely connected to this one, they will find a scapegoat. I think in all fairness Canada should do like the US did to Cuba .... restrict all travel to Mexico through Canadian airports ... if you want to go, you will need to travel via the US and suspend all free-trade agreements with Mexico.Perhaps that will get the point across !

Been in Mexico every year for 25 years - on the Pacific Coast - never had any interest in going here as I always understood it was a dirty port city - never heard of it referred to as a resort area of any signifigance til this incident. I understand that some cruise ships stopped going there during the 2011 season because of the crime rate. (As a side note I have heard of a number of tragedies of Canadians over the years around the west coast and I am sorry to say that the ones I am aware of seem to be related to alcohol/drugs/sex or maybe poor judgement on the part of the victim.) Years ago if you used poor judgement in Detroit, New York or Miami you could suffer the similar fate.

Any chance they can release this video to the media and the public. This might be a good way to catch this scumbag, especially if he is indeed an international tourist. It would obviously be disturbing to watch, but we may as well engage the international community in on the manhunt...My continued prayers go out to the victim and her family...

GOOD JOB CTV!!! I thought you were going to sweep these latest developments under the rug. You've given some much air time to this story that it's only fair that you follow it through until the end. It is not always Mexicans who are after Canadians. This story has created so much fear mongering it's eye rolling. While this is super unfortunate, there is always more than meets the eye to every story. I'm glad that there is video so that they can find this tourist and bring him to justice; without it, i'm sure people would've blamed Mexican authorities for covering up the incident. While I do think that the violence in Mexico is unjustifiable, I also find it unfair that just because it happens in Mexico, it gets bucketted into the same pool of "Mexican Violence". We cannot forget that there are also other Nationalities visiting the country who behave like total jerks (for a lack of a better word) because they think "they can do anything they want in Mexico". I hope I see this story get the end it deserves and above all, I pray for Sheila's recovery. No person from any place on vacation, business or any other situation deserves this. No one.

It will be interesting when the truth comes out on this story, if it ever does. It's disturbing that this happened down there and sounds like it was a tourist that did the beating not a Mexican. Alberta is a backwards province the majority of people I've met from there I would like to pinch the lights out.
