An Ontario couple has come forward with their story of being attacked and scammed in Mexico.

Scott and Sarah Giddy of Fergus, Ont., said they were devastated after learning what happened to Sheila Nabb, who recently awoke from a medically induced coma after she was brutally beaten in a Mexican hotel's elevator.

Scott Giddy was attacked last year just outside the five-star resort he was staying in with his wife -- the same resort in which Nabb was found unconscious last week.

The Giddys were at a restaurant just outside of the Hotel Riu Emerald Bay in Mazatlan, when Scott stepped outside by himself to look at some arts and crafts.

Soon, he was attacked, and his wife found him covered in blood.

"There was a huge pool of blood on the floor and Scott was on the wall bleeding profusely from his left ear," Sarah said.

Sarah yelled for help and wanted to take her husband to a hospital when a taxi driver offered them a ride, saying it would be faster than waiting for an ambulance.

But instead of going to a hospital, the taxi took them to a private clinic.

"We know that the taxi driver received a commission from the clinic," Sarah told CTV Southwestern Ontario. The driver was given cash by the clinic, who then asked for the couple's credit card.

"We ended up being at that clinic for 45 minutes and I was charged $4,700," Sarah said.

Scott was soon taken to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a skull fracture and two blown ear drums. Doctors said he could have died from the beating.

To make matters worse, money collectors began following the couple, demanding they give them cash.

Insurance covered the hospital treatment, but not the $4,700 clinic fee. Scott's father eventually took out a cash advance for the treatment.

The couple still has no idea who beat up Scott, and Mexican police never even interviewed him.

The Giddys say they are not suggesting Canadians avoid Mexico, but caution that even five-star resorts have dangers.

Canada's Foreign Affairs department's website suggests Canadians should avoid taxis in Mexico unless they are hired by their resort.

Nabb, who was put in a medically induced coma, was brought back to consciousness earlier this week. She was set to undergo surgery on severe facial fractures this week, but her doctors have postponed the procedure because of a bout of pneumonia.
