Though European debt and trade are high on the agenda, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has kicked off the World Economic Forum in Switzerland by speaking with business leaders from his own country.

Harper is in the Swiss resort town of Davos where top powerbrokers are gathering to talk about the world's most pressing financial issues.

He arrived Wednesday morning alongside about 40 staff members and a fleet of 20 vehicles.

This year, the theme of the annual retreat is "great transformation" and the discussions will touch on how nations can prosper financially without being irresponsible.

More than 2,600 big thinkers from world's top and emerging markets are on hand at the meet. Harper, however, decided to start things off by meeting with businesspeople from his home and native land.

He spoke with Jim Leech of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, CIBC chairman Charles Sirois and the CEOs of Desjardins Group and Barrick Gold on Wednesday morning.

Calling the group "the biggest job creators in the country," Harper told the leaders that he wants to know and understand the challenges they face.

"As you know, the economy is our No. 1 focus," he told the group.

The meeting echoes speeches Harper has made in the past which have aimed to stir the confidence of corporate investors and stimulate growth.

However, Harper's biggest contribution to the conference is expected to centre on a global issue, specifically, Europe and its sovereign debt crisis.

In a phone call from Zurich, CTV News' Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife said Harper will call on Europeans to act quickly to dodge both a domestic and global recession.

He'll likely advise them to devote more money to a rescue package, noted Fife.

Harper's clarion call would be coming just days after the International Monetary Fund warned that Europe is a global recession risk, or in the very least, can potentially slow world markets.

The IMF has also reduced its expectations for global growth, projecting 3.25 per cent expansion compared to last year's four per cent.

It's not yet clear, however, if the Davos meeting can succeed in setting Europe on the path to positive change.

"There is a lot of pressure to stop talking and get on with it," IHS chief economist Nariman Behravesh told the Canadian Press. "The hope is that they will make progress."

Not only will the Prime Minister use the forum to address debt, but international trade is also expected to be high on the agenda.

"He's also going to be talking about the importance of Canadian trade, the need to diversify our trade, talk about Canadian oil," said Fife.

It's been a rollercoaster month for Canada and its trading partners.

Last week, U.S. President Barack Obama rejected the proposed Alberta to Texas Keystone XL pipeline citing domestic politics as the reason. In the same vein, there's been much debate about the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline, which would see Alberta bitumen sent to Asia, a growing market.

There's also word that Harper will use his speech to highlight the budget Canadians will be seeing next spring, added Fife.

Apt, considering there's a notable Canadian contingent at the meet.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, who wants to nix the nation's deficit in four to five years, is at the conference. Also on hand is International Trade Minister Ed Fast who helped extend the Canada-U.S. softwood lumber agreement just days ago.

They're joined by the Bank of Canada's Mark Carney, who is settling into his role as head of the international Financial Stability Board.

Harper will also participate in a question-and-answer with Klaus Schwab, the German economist who founded the World Economic Forum discussions.

James, it is apparent from your comment that you do not understand our political system, the position and powers of the Governor General, the position and limited powers fo the Prime Minister, not the actual events that occured. Simple fact is that there was a barely legal, and contrary to our parlimentary tradition and constitution, attempted coup and only the willingness of the Governor General to do what what right bought enough time for it to be stopped. But then you would have enjoyed the chaos the coup would have caused.

So pm Harpers big plan is to cut corporate taxes. The idea of rewarding the corporations makes me sick to my stomach. For all you sheeple latched on to the corp. mantra's, this probably goes over your heads as you are to worried about climbing higher up thier ladders. That said, How many of these corporations outsourced the manufacturing to overseas countries? (dissappeance of jobs)How many corporations dumped the trained proffesional workforce here for slave labour wages in locations abroad, for call centres etc?Not all of them But a huge part. Now you want to give them a break on taxes which just puts more profit in thier pockets. How about giving the working class back thier money, in which we will spend more on goods that these companies are pedalling anyway. The govenment makes more from the increase in the taxes on sales and all promotes to growth. And to finalize, absolutly give some form of breaks to those that create and retain jobs in this country.

Just know that if the Federal Liberals had NOT taken $30 Billion out of the EI Fund to pay down the debt and the other $40 Million in the Adscam..the $30 Billion would now be $50 Billion so should have left well enough alone. Former Liberal Paul Martin we saw who wore the pants in his family besides himself. The Liberals sure live up to their name and also here in Ontario spend, spend, spend and then cut back on what the small Canadians need.

The current economic stability Canada has enjoyed took many years of foundation building and careful management. Is it reasonable to think that the Harper team is responsible for very much of this? They have only just begun a majority government. The fiscal planning and organization was put in place by Paul Martin when he was the finance minister. As prime minister Mr Martin was out of his element. But I do think we should give credit where it is due. Had it not been for some of his foresight the Canadian Banks and investment businesses would not have been in nearly as good shape as they have been. The tighter control on our nation's finances with regard to loans, mortgages, interest, investments etc began when Mr Martin was in charge of the purse strings. Give up on the party bickering. It is not about Liberal or conservative. It is about who has done a good job. Blind support of a party should be long gone by now.

We should do something drastic like elect the Federal NDP to a majority government. At least we know they aren't for the big corporations and are for the workers rights. It's time the people take their country back.

Scott.....so by your assertion anyone who posts a pro Conservative comment must be being paid. I guess then we can assume that you, steve, SteveH, SteveO, Bonnie, stewie, Stu, and the list goes on, are being paid by the Liberal party. Only difference is, you all keep going on in such similar fashion, about the "13 billion, 25%, Paul Martin's surplus", blah, blah, blah. Perhaps some individual thought would give you more credibility. The Conservatives don't even know that I support them, so if there is money to be had, maybe you can clue the rest of us in. Now I will await Canadian Bob, as he so likes to belittle any comments that I make, but then after all, his comments and opinions have so much more relevance than mine,or anyone else that is pro Conservative ( in his mind at least).

@Pete: And you appear to be glossing over the fact that the minute the other parties called Harper on something he proposed he went crying to the GG with his tail between his legs to have her shut down the government. @Bonnie I love the comments about the Liberal surplus, I guess you just glaze over the fact that the money was siphoned from the UI funds to create the so-called surplus? You seem to also forget the spending you speak of was stimulus spending that was put forth by a MINORITY government. That means the other parties had to agree to it!

To all who replied: You see, just look at the comments on here, we are so busy slashing and cutting down ourselves in this country because of politics I believe that is what is going to hold this country down from greatness. I dont' care of your a Liberal of if your Conservative, instead of us wasting energy blaming each political party for this, that and the other, why don't we take our strengths and really build something magnificent, which by the way this country is already awesome, but look how much better we would be if we would stop this BS tit for tat childish behaviour. Sure, we are all going to have differences of opinions, but if we work together on those differences, we can close the gaps and find real solutions, fantastic policies. So please, stand up and be proud as a Canadian and support those who are representing us (Liberal, PC or otherwise) who take Canada on the world stage. After all, outside this country we are still seen as a bright light in this world.

Harper hasn't introduced any economic policies so our economy is all thanks to the liberals. Don't think we ever had a PM that spent as much as Harper's spending or should I say throwing away. The reformers are creating massive debt & putting Canadians out of work, unemployment keeps rising under Harper & the jobs available don't pay enough to pay the bills. Harper has been a failure on all counts he has nothing to offer anyone. Have a look at all the paid reformers on this site. How much does Harper pay Pye Chart to put out his partisan misinformation. I'll bet Pye won't tell us how much he's getting paid to perpetuate Harper's lies.

@ remarkable. I agree with your point to stop pointing fingers based on political stripe. The issue with Harper for me, is that he is clearly not a good fiscal manager. GST reductions was a bad move. And it was a political move, and not an economic one. It has contributed significantly to our deficit, and it was unnecessary. Massive capital expenditures such as jets and prisons and the people filling those prisons have no return on investment. You simply can't take a group of people (typically young males) remove them from society and employment, isolate them socially and from skill training then throw them back on the street years later and think that is NOT going to be an economic and social burden on the rest of us. Look at the US and their experience in that matter. You manage the house by keeping revenues strong and reducing expenditures. He simply is not doing that. He plays to his minority base were he derives most of his votes and makes decisions based on that. I vote PC. But not for this guy. Give me someone reasonable.

Joe M

Hey Max in Van BC, get your facts straight before spewing your awful English here. The liberals reduced the debt that was increased to $628B by Mulldoon. the debt fell to $450 B or less with Paul Martin running the finances and when SteveO started, he raised the debt to $577 and will surpass the $600B soon. when he's finished in 2014/15 it will be over the $628B he's buddy and mentor Mulldoon created... so, educate yourself a little. Also, Harper has not garnered the admiration of other countries, they actually think he's a pompous #$%^&*( as noted by the German Chancellor and many other leaders that turn their nose up at him

Joe M
said

hey remarkable, heres the issue, HARPER Govt cannot go to other countries to say, Look at me, i'm better than you, so do as i say and not as i really do. so what, he has a degree in Econ, that does not mean a thing, also it was like 50 years ago, based on principles of that time. . . . his track record in the past 20 years contradicts that statement. If we (Canada) can provide guidance on what our banking system or government is doing, then thats the offer, STOP bashing the Liberals in every global forum your involved with. Also, they only reason he took his gang of cronies is to keep them out of the public eye here. Has anyone seen MacKay? ? ? ? ! must be taking another helo ride hunting. . . . . . I'm all for Paul Martin coming back into the race and reduce our DEBT, not our deficit, another HARPER play on words. . . . .

Holy geez, the comments on here are so ridiculous, many of you have no idea what your speaking about. All of you are either Pro Liberal (hate Harper no matter what) or Pro Conservative (everything is the Liberals fault) pointing your fingers at one another, lashing out at Harper for doing what a PM is suppose to do. Look, I don't care of your Liberal or Conservative, Harper is a whiz at economics and has the track record and educational credentials to prove it. Paul Martin is a pretty savy guy himself and I believe the two of them together could offer a lot to the Europeans and Americans for that matter to get them out of that financial mess that they are both in. We should stop knocking our own people down because of political stripe and be proud that we have people like them in this country who can go out into the world and offer solid, concrete solutions and new fresh eye's approach idea's to fix these issue's. How can we stand united as a nation when we are all politically divided by this stupidity.

The problem with the Europeans is, they don't want to take advice from anyone who is "non-European", especially from a Canadian or an American. It has to do with that hierarchy mentality that Europeans have within their class structure which is why they love to bash North Americans (especially Americans). So, they arent' willing to listen to us, they feel they have the all the answers which is why they are drowning in their debt, in fact they will drown in their own debt long before the US (the US has the means to pull themselves out). Good Bye Europe, your credit rating is about to slide to a 2nd or 3rd rate status.

@ Steve H: Last May's federal election proved that your false pride over the Liberals, supposedly, "saving" Canada's banks (no anti-Conservative has ever explained what, specifically, the Liberals did in relation to what, supposedly, Mr. Harper, suggested years ago -- it's all vapid rhetoric) isn't worth a political nickel. Worthless, too, is pretending that the Conservatives unilaterally spent tens of billions of dollars during their minority tenure in Parliament, without the formal cooperation of the Opposition Liberals and NDP. Time to take a deep breath and let the partisan nonsense go, Steve. Canada's economy is sitting atop the G7 right now, right below Germany, and is poised to overtake its European ally if it slides, as some predict, in 2012/2013. Keep shedding those bogus tears. We're still mired in a global economic recession, and all is not rosy, to be sure. However, our Conservative government is doing a respectable job, and garnered a majority for good reason. Thanks.

What an amazing grasp of reality the leftie wingnuts have. It's not the PM inviting himself to a foreign country; it's an international conference,.The PM is invited to speak because Canada is the envy of the world, and Mr. Harper's stature has grown immensely on the world stage in recent years, whether in the U.S. or Europe. His advice to the Eurozone is dead on. Get your act together quickly because it's effecting the economies of the entire world.

Len

Don't know if Harper is the right person to explain to Europe how to solve their debt problems. He's not solving ours any better than what has already been proposed over there. He's advocating a leaner government but lately the little guy is getting laid off while he brings the big guns on board so he can reward his rich friends. He won't work with others but chooses to be a leader who works in dictatorial terms. If he only always did the correct thing that would be great but he's making too many errors and also goes by false assumptions.

I agree 100% with your comment Steve H . This PM is so full of himself is would be funny but the sad thing is, we are stuck with him now. He spent 15 minutes TELLING the FN chiefs what he is prepared not to do, instead of TALKING to them. A discussion with them would be out of the question because he calls that bickering. He didn't even go to Attawataskat because he wouldn't want the world to know that DeBeers diamond mine has destroyed the water for the people living there. The trick with treaties is you have to actually honour them. He studied Economics but has never worked outside politics. There is a difference between an Economist and a person who studied Commerce. Anit Harper comments and pro Liberal comments are just old and redundant. Harper has been asked to speak for a very good reason, he is the PM of the country that has weathered the recession the best. To claim that the PM is responsible for the national debt and the daily interest due is just plain dumb. Harper is not responsible for the 400 billion national debt, Trudeau started that process and the Liberals grew the debt in leaps and bounds. Harper inherited this debt and is trying to reduce it during a WORLD RECESSION.

Steve H
said

Harper has nothing to offer at these meetings, the one & only reason Canada's banking stayed strong is because the liberals would let Harper deregulate our banks. If they would we'd be in the same shape as the US. Is all Harper can really say is thank goodness the liberals didn't let me destroy Canada's banking. Our banks did receive about 200 billion in bailouts in tax breaks & the government bought risky mortgages from our banks. We pay 84 million per day in interest on our national debt and Harper keeps on spending. Have a look at Canada's debt clock Harper has us going into debt at a rate of about 4 million per minute and we haven't even begun to pay for the new war toys he's ordered. My bet is he bankrupts Canada. Harper is by far the worst PM Canada has ever had.
