Facebook has now made half a billion friends, meaning one in every 14 people on Earth has joined the social networking website, the company confirmed this week.

Six years after Mark Zuckerberg's company got its start in a Harvard dorm room, Facebook has taken aim at reaching one billion members, matching the number of Google users.

Facebook spokesperson Randi Zuckerberg said much of the next 500 million users could come from India and Brazil, two large countries where the service is underperforming.

"We just announced 12 million users in India and six million in Brazil, those are really exicitng numbers for us because just this time last year we had just a very small footprint in those countries," she told Canada AM Thursday morning in a telephone interview.

Zuckerberg also said mobile use is going to drive growth.

"One-hundred-and-fifty million people access Facebook actively on their mobile phones, which I think it is going to be paramount to our growth in the years to come," she said.

Last summer, Facebook had 250 million members and the website has gained 100 million new members since February of this year.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a blog post he could "never (have) imagined all of the ways people would use Facebook."

In a video message, Zuckerberg announced the launch of "Facebook Stories" to highlight stories about Facebook's impact on its users.

The service will let users search stories based on location or on themes, such as love, grief, crime solving, politics or health.

Also to mark the 500 million milestone, the company had all of its employees record some kind of "Thank You" for users of the service at www.facebook.com/thanks.

A few Facebook facts:

  • If Facebook was a country it would be the third largest, behind only China and India
  • Facebook has 15 times more users than Canada's entire population
  • Facebook has 100 billion hits a day
  • There are more than 50 billion photos on Facebook

Everything you do for me reassures me that I am appreciated. I want you to know that you mean so much to me. From the first day we met, you were determined to get to know me. At first, I was skeptical about you because of your persistence, but you quickly grew on me. I want you to know that every moment we’ve spent together since that first day holds a special place in my heart. I was afraid at first that if I let you in I’d regret it, but I haven’t regretted a single moment. I trust you, and I know you’ll be there for me no matter what. I trust that you’ll be faithful to me and that you won’t hurt my heart. You tell me how you want only the best for me. You tell me how beautiful I am. You tell me how you love every curve of my body. You just make me feel extra special; make me feel a sense of warmth inside. I want you to know that I love you for this! I love you for being so caring and genuine. I love you for everything you’ve done for me. I love you for the happiness and joy you bring to my life. I love you for you! We don’t even need to talk to communicate with each other. By just being together, holding hands, or cuddling, we can sense each other’s thoughts and inner feelings. I want you to know that I want the best for you as well. I want you to succeed and I want all your dreams and fantasies to come true. I know that in me you see a young woman full of kindness, understanding, and compassion. A young woman with an open-heart. A young woman who puts a smile on your face everyday. I will be that woman who’s there for you just as you’re there for me, the one who encourages you through life’s ups and downs. But ultimately, I want to be the woman who is your everything. Not an hour goes by that I don’t think about you. You have brought so much joy to my life and you give me so much to look forward to when I wake up every morning. I want you to know that I sincerely appreciate you and I can never tell you enough that “I LOVE YOU!”

As more people become aware that the police are snooping on on their facebook page, facebook will become a thing of the past for much conversation. I'm a honest law abiding citizen, but who knows how the police will interpret what you say. The conservatives don't see this as an invasion of privacy, but questions like, how many bedrooms do you have is? It's a shame it's seems everyday we lose more of our freedom with this government.

@tinkywinkyyour math is wrong its 5 hundred million diveded by 7 billion for the percentage which is 7.1% which is about 1 in 14. Im not sure what the 500 member count is. whether they have a way of tracking unique memberships or if it includes duplicates etc. last i heard though they only count "active" members so someone who has visited in the last few months maybe?

A tool like any other, and a fad. Facebook will eventually implode and life will continue.

Better headline: "Facebook Aims For 1 Billion Losers." Like cultural lemmings, people flock to the social networking website to satisfy curiosity, nosiness, and loneliness. It is an artificial connecter to the world, in which people PRETEND to have plenty of real friends when, of course, they have just empty electronic souls logged in their register. Worthless. At the end of the day, nobody sees each other, and nobody speaks over that old-school invention that allows you to actually hear a person's voice, the telephone. It's fake. It's phony. A societal or meaningful technological advancement? Nope. Just more silly chewing gum for the brain. Most Facebook users know that the reality of their life isn't represented, in any way, by the website. I suspect that a significant percentage of Facebook "friends" are idle and inactive, having realized that it's ultimately a dumb, hype-generating novelty. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to see what Demi Moore's up to on Twitter.

so facebook has 500 mil friends, isn't that 14% not 1 in 14. 7bil divided by 500 mil = 14%which is about 1 in 7.but I guess once you subtract the fake accounts, or business accounts, I can understand the 1 in 14.
