Coulter tells Ont. Muslim student to 'take a camel'

Coulter speech cancelled over fears of violence

Date: Tue. Mar. 23 2010 9:03 PM ET

The University of Ottawa cancelled a speech by U.S. firebrand conservative Ann Coulter late Tuesday, just moments before its scheduled start, because organizers feared protesters would turn violent.

As people were still making their way into the venue, the building had to be evacuated when a fire alarm was triggered.

The incident followed a Monday night lecture at the University of Western Ontario, where Coulter told a Muslim student to "take a camel" as an alternative to flying.

Coulter made the comment as she responded to a question from student Fatima Al-Dhaher, who asked about previous comments in which Coulter said Muslims shouldn't be allowed on airplanes and should take "flying carpets" instead. Al-Dhaher noted she did not own a flying carpet and asked what she should take as an alternative transportation.

Coulter did not deny making the flying carpet comment and replied to the university student, "What mode of transportation? Take a camel," to jeers and cheers. It was a decidedly pro-Coulter audience. One man, who identified himself as a U.S. citizen, described U.S. President Barack Obama as a "Marxist."

Some students, including Al-Dhaher, walked out after the camel comment.

Coulter said Tuesday that her comment about taking flying carpets was a joke that was made during an interview with The Guardian newspaper about racial profiling, and had been taken out of context.

"I can say it a lot quicker with a joke, and by the way, they wouldn't be bringing me in here for a speech if I never told a joke, if I never used satire," Coulter told CTV's Power Play Tuesday. "It's not so much a joke, it's satire because there's a political point behind my saying that they can take flying carpets."

Coulter did not elaborate on what her political point actually was.

She is well-known for her vehement views against Muslims. In a post-September 11 column, she wrote that the U.S. should invade Muslim countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity.

Al-Dhaher said she attended the lecture "with an open mind" and had not planned to ask a question. However, when Coulter began making remarks about homosexuals, African-Americans and Muslims, she felt the need to speak up, she said.

"I just thought that it was despicable and I thought that I should speak up against it," Al-Dhaher told CTV News Channel Tuesday afternoon. "So, I wrote on my phone because I was afraid I'd get nervous up there and forget my question."

Al-Dhaher said Coulter is entitled to her opinions but said the university could have chosen a right-wing speaker who is less inflammatory.

"I think that if the intention of the university is to bring two different speakers from two different political spectrums, I think that there are better choices from that camp that they could have chosen rather than Ann Coulter, because she is a bit vocal and she is a bit outrageous in some of the things that she says."

Coulter spoke in front of a packed audience of about 800 at the university.

Coulter to file human rights complaint

The cancellation of Coulter's lecture at the University of Ottawa came after she received an email about the limits of free speech in Canada from the school's provost.

The private email, which was leaked to conservative news organizations, noted that Canada's Charter of Rights meant that "promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges."

Francois Houle, vice-president academic and University of Ottawa provost, invited Coulter to educate herself on Canadian free speech laws.

"We, of course, are always delighted to welcome speakers on our campus and hope that they will contribute positively to the meaningful exchange of ideas that is the hallmark of a great university campus," wrote Houle.

The letter only added fuel to the fire of Coulter's speaking tour, which is titled, "Political Correctness, Media Bias and Freedom of Speech."

Coulter told Power Play that because she is from an identifiable group ("I'm a Christian, I'm a conservative, I'm a female"), she is the victim of a hate crime and will file a complaint with Canada's Human Rights Commission.

Wrong approach by U of Ottawa: MPs

Coulter, who often comments on Fox News, once said Canada is "lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent" after the Canadian government did not join the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Her tour was organized by International Free Press Society, a group whose website sets up Islam as the preeminent threat to democracy in the Western world.

"This jihad, like all jihads before it, will continue until a sharia-based caliphate rules the world, or until it is defeated," the society's policy statement says.

The group also sells one of the infamous Danish Mohammad cartoons, signed by cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, for $250. They are currently sold out.

Among the group's board of advisers are Canadian conservative bloggers Ezra Levant and Kathy Shaidle, author Mark Steyn and far-right Dutch political leader Geert Wilders.

Coulter reportedly commands a $10,000 speaking fee. Her fee is being covered in part by the Claire Boothe Luce Policy Institute, an American group that calls itself the "home of conservative women leaders."

Some critics say trying to quiet Coulter is the wrong approach to discrediting her views.

"In terms of putting limits on what she ... should say or shouldn't say, I'm not sure that helps," New Democrat MP Paul Dewar, told The Canadian Press. "It might add fuel to the fire that she will be probably starting tomorrow."

Liberal MP Scott Brison made a similar comment.

"If you don't agree with what she has to say, then ignore her," he said.

Coulter's Canadian tour wraps up at the University of Calgary on Thursday.

I would like to wish Fatima Al-Dhaher peace and happiness. What Coulter said was unconscionable. Sometimes it is hard to know what to do with people like Coulter. If we ignore her she will probably open up for a puppet show down the line like Spinal Tap did. However we will not acknowledge the deep and lasting hurt she causes. If we give her attention she get what she craves money and attention. Coulter says more about ourselves than what she is. The best way to act is to constantly defend all of our fellow human beings in Canada and throughout the world. Ms. Al-Dhaher is my hero. I would like to thank her for defending me when I am a white Canadian born male.

Professor Pye Chart: You write that " She's trying to cause a crazy stir. It's 2010, and women can defend themselves quite admirably; without your patronizing and insulting call to attention. " I'm sorry, but what exactly is your point here? I'm merely hoisting Coulter by her own petard. She said it- she can wear it. As for your claim that I'm somehow "patronizing" women, that's just nonsense. I'm defending their right to vote against a right-wing crazy. If Coulter didn't mean what she said, then why should anyone take her seriously? You apparently don't either, yet here you are defending her... And by the way "Professor" if you're going to call attention to my typo's, could I just point out that you don't know how to use a semicolon? Only use a semicolon when separating two independent clauses, "Professor", (or when using a list containing commas), not when separating a prepositional phrase from an independent clause. " ; without your patronizing..." is not a complete thought. That's not the first time you've made this error, but I don't usually stoop to pointing out other people's typo's. All of us make them Professor. How about sticking to the issues? In this case, the issue is Coulter's absurd arguments, and what right- wing mouth breathers she appeals to.

@ X Con Supporter: If you're going to get your political jollies from quoting people (in this latest case, Ann Coulter), it might be a good idea to introduce the requisite sense of humor to your take, so that you actually understand the lighthearted point being made. Ann Coulter, a strong, educated, liberated, independent-minded woman in her own right, regularly pokes sarcastic fun at what she believes is her gender's political laziness in favoring liberal ideology and left-wing political figures like sheep following a moving food bin. She simply wishes that more women would (in her opinion) resist the utopian picture-painting of liberal politicians fashioning little more than nice teeth, a nice suit, and a handsome head of hair. Deal with it. She's trying to cause a crazy stir. It's 2010, and women can defend themselves quite admirably; without your patronizing and insulting call to attention. Lastly, and further to my previous comment directed toward you, labeling right-wingers "imbeciles" ("imbiciles") and misspelling the word yourself was a nice, high-brow touch.

Coulter is clearly mainly interested in attention, which sells her books and keeps the cash rolling in. I read one of her books basically on a dare, and it was full of inaccuracies and common but false misconceptions. However, she has an audience who wants to hear her if only as shock humor. Her audience also has the right to book her for a talk and people who don't like what she has to say don't have to go. Don't like Fox News? Turn the channel. Interestingly enough, the title of her tour is kind of bourne out by the letter she received. I don't think anyone can doubt that the media is not slanted towards the left, and university campuses are notorious for it. The reaction to her tour is proof of it. Coulter's left wing counterpart, Michael Moore, who similarly grandstands and misrepresents the truth would never get a letter from a university implying that he better watch his mouth or else he could end up in jail.

@FELDWEBL "Wait a minute, Muslims are against us and our freedoms. She, and Geert Wilders are just telling you what they're up to." - - actually, you are confused a little bit. Muslims are not actually against freedom. Thats a pretty broad brush you are using there. Its no different than suggesting all jews are terrorists, or that Iranian people who spoke up for their freedom are actually against freedom. I can also add that Osama Bin Laden himself is not against freedom especially when he said "I say to you that security is an indispensable pillar of human life and that free men do not forfeit their security, contrary to Bush's claim that we hate freedom. If so, then let him explain to us why we don't strike for example - Sweden? And we know that freedom-haters don't possess defiant spirits." - Bin Ladin. Freedom isn´t free and its a continued struggle no matter what they look look or what their religion is. Israel recently had their diplomats kicked out of UK, Obama is threatening strong reaction against Israel if they continue on their current path. Even Canada has denounced Israel. The world is denouncing Israel. Once statehood is established for the Palestinians, people like Ann Coulture will have to find something else to demonize. Its really unfair to attack all muslims. There used to be this quote that "not all muslims are terorrists, but all terrorists are muslim" until people pointed out the troubles in Norther Irelands Protestants vs Catholics, and the Crusades, etc. Religion is simply a political tool. Republicans always use chuches because of their easily exploitable masses.

It is that she is a disrespectful human being (if you can even classify her as a human being), a rude and obnoxious hypocrite, an ignorant and disrespectful blotch on the pages of our history as a growing world, an embarassment to everyone who has worked hard their entire lives for common decency, and just plainly it is personal and I cannot stand her, or what she represents. I think she belongs in Germany from 1930's to the 1940's.

If the camel comment was the worst thing she did (and the failure to metion any other comments suggests this) then it was a pretty tame presentation. Unfortunately too many people think 'hate speech' is something that hurts somebody's feelings rather than its true definition of inciting violence against a group of people on the basis of their race, creed, religion etc. BIG difference.

Ann Coltures schtick is being the bad girl of journalism. Glenn Beck is another, and then you have Bill O´Reilly and lets not forget Lou Dobbs. They are all those rebels we went to high school with. They smoked, and even brought a can of beer one day to school. Yeah, thats when I started using the F-word and it really felt liberating back then to not actually think so much with all the studying we had to do. But, after a few counselling sessions with my school administrator I was convinced that my new found friend wasnt as she appeared to be and how with some people "bad attention is better than no attention." - thats when the light bulb turned on in my head and realized that she wasnt so cool! She was just another girl using props to garner attention. Without the slurs, beer, and smokes, she was just....boring. Ann is that girl who never grew up.

How did this woman, well known for promoting hate, violence, and murder, EVEN MAKE IT INTO THIS COUNTRY? WHY was she given permission by the university to promote and publicize this hate in our country?

Surely the university doesn't let just ANYONE use their grounds for public speaking, (I could be wrong), surely the university knew who this clown was, and what she stands for; and surely the university understands that by allowing this event to take place, they are responsible for every word that comes from her mouth!

Like her or don't, but free speech means she is allowed to say it. I find it interesting that some of the comments on this site imply that hatred, racism or bigotry is a right wing or conservative thing and that this is somehow indicitive of conservative thought. Its not. As a counter-argument, the communist societies are as far left as you can be, they were racists (for example in eastern europe they were very against the gypsies, ukranians were second class citizens and they suppressed those in the eastern part of russian who are asians, muslims etc), Stalin killed more people than Hitler and denied any access to free speech. Racism and bigotry can affect any political stripe, it has nothing to do with right wing or conservative ideals. As well, just because you don't agree with a religious or cultural practice does not make you a racist, by broadening the use of these words you lose the true meaning. Until she says all Muslims must die she is not the same as Hitler, he didn't only warn about what he believed were the dangers of Jewish people but actually promoted removing them from the earth entirely, that is an entirely different concept. Using rhetoric and labels to discredit her is just buying into her game, instead use reason and logic to prove why she is wrong, that is the point of free speech and open debate, use it.

While Coluter is an idiot, I have major problems with these free speech limits in Canada. And I have the right to ignore you because you're a moron. I have problems with the courts being able to decide what speech counts as "hate".I don't support basically any of Coulter's views (I don't even know if she does, I think it's partially an act to purposely create controversy), but I support her right to say them.

I agree with Raymond when he says "Liberals are soooo sensitive".It now appears that only people with left wing views have the right to free speech. Most of what I heard from her speech really was more about common sense tha it was about right vs left. The problem with laws that legislate political correctness,is that they simply stifle free debate. No one who opposes political the popular view speaks. Not because they don't have a valid opinion, but because they fear being branded or incarcerated. Sarah Palin is another example of a right wing voice that goes a bit over the top. But,now that the health care bill has passed in the USA,and even as absurd as her comments were about death squads and rationed health care,it now seems many of those poorly worded views are coming close to reality. Her comments went far beyond civility, for sure. But now, even supporters of the health care bill in the USA are beginning to admit that many people with extremely good health care coverage now, will see lower levels of service under the new systems. It is fair to say basic coverage should include everyone before anyone gets Cadillac service. But it is not unfair to say some will get less,so others can get something. Her ridiculous rhetoric,in fact, now seems to contain some elements of truth.I think the same applies to Ms.Coulter. Hear her out,and make up your own mind as to what elements of her speech have merit.Anyone who thinks can easliy understand where she uses exaggerated claims to support a valid argument.

Some of you are claiming that Coulter is correct in saying that Canada was in Vietnam because some Canadians were involved of their own free will. But Coulter believes that Canada as a nation had declared war on North Vietnam just as America did, and has reiterated this nonsense several times since. She also continues to argue that there are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq that we will somehow discover very soon. As the article says, she claims that Canadians are lucky that "America allows (us) to exist on the same continent." Why would any loyal Canadian support someone with that opinion? I do agree, however, that she should be allowed to spew this absurdity if she wants to. Free speech isn't just for those whose views we favour. Only by exposing this kind of racist blather to the light to reason can we hope to eradicate it. People like Coulter should be ashamed of themselves for their views. Luckily, they're usually not smart enough to keep their mouths shut, so it's possible to name and shame them publicly.

Painting her views as how the "conservatives/right wing" think is completely small-minded. She is one voice and does not represent all conservative thinkers. Its like saying all left-leaning people are marxist communists, that's not right either. Its time our country realized that people with conservative or liberal views likely share a lot of opinions with each other, nothing is black and white, it is shades of grey. Comments saying this is an indication of what all conservative or right wing thinkers "really think" is wrong, promotes division and hatred and is completely close-minded. While I may not agree with what she says, she has the right to say it, if you promote free speech you must promote free speech for all people, not just the people you agree with. As one poster said, use reason and debate for why you disagree with her, or even ignore her, silencing her only fuels the fire. If you start to pick and choose what kind of free speech is allowed then it is no longer free. Saying that, there is a limit when promoting hatred, however, there are many groups out there who disagree over religion and culture, not all disagreements are automatically promoting hatred, people are allowed their opinions, without that we are no longer free. Universities are meant to promote debate and free thought, and this forum has shown that allowing her to speak there has done that.

B. Kelley, Ontario

I can't believe the number of posters who actually believe that we should launder everything that is said in this country to ensure that no one is ever offended or has their feelings hurt. Democracy was not only founded on the concept of free speech but the very continuation of it's existence depends on that right. An expressed opinion is seldom fatal to the person who disagrees with it. Few people have ever bled when subjected to a statement they didn't like. Coulter was not firing bullets, she was speaking words that you may or may not agree with but, in the end, they are nothing more than words. Have people not noticed that the countries in this world that suppress free speech are the same ones that breed radicals who commit acts of terrorism against innocent people? Have you not noticed that there is a direct correlation between the level of freedom in each country and the standard of living enjoyed by it's citizens? Suppression of free and open thought, debate, speech and opinions is the first giant step toward a state of fascism that should be shunned by all thinking people, no matter where they sit in the political spectrum.

I think she's hilarious. The lunie left should chill for a few minutes. It is free speech, which the left claims as a Charter right. And she isn't any more offensive than the nut cases that promote the extreme left. While even most conservative types don't take her very seriously, she does,in her own way, make a good about political correctness.I think she would be more effictive if she didn't exaggerate so much,But really, she says a lot of things other people think, but, because of the level of political correctness now being imposed by the lefties, most are to afraid to say anything. She' relevant, and funny. If you're open minded enough, you can find some truths, albeit some exaggerated truths in what she says.If all she does is make you think, she has a role to play in politics. And we all know,I hope, that none of us should allow anyone else to do all of our critical thinking for us. For my part,I don't care what the socialists,or what the gays,or what the femininists,or any other identifiable group thinks of her.If I have to listen to each and every special interest group on the planet because they have free speech rights,I want to hear from those with dissenting views. As to Mr.Galloway,he was refused a VISA to Canada, not because he was a left wing nut job,but because he had criminality issues. The same rule that applies to everyone else. Are you now suggesting MP's from the UK,or left wing nut cases be given special privileges on VISA applications? And finally,as extreme as her dialogues may seem to some, trust me,many ofher views are shared by others. Our laws can keep them silent, but driving them underground, rather than addressing the divisions,is poor public policy. It is far better to hear what people are really thinking, and tackle the issues head on,in the light of day.

The provost of the University of Ottawa demonstrated foolish arrogance and utter stupidity in firing a warning shot over Ann Coulter's head. Her response was expected and justified. (Typical liberal boneheadedness, to somehow "force" political correctness.) As for student Fatima Al-Dhaher, an entirely disingenuous attendee, she got the retort she was seeking and, frankly, bargained for. Spare us the tearful "she-stabbed-me-in-the-heart" garbage. The unacknowledged value of mouthpiece Ann Coulter is that she's fearless and unwavering in her determination to, with unapologetic impoliteness, force targeted Westerners to consider the role of Islam in terrorism ("All Muslims may not be terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslim."), and force followers of the religious faith to consider their moral responsibility in fingering radicalized Muslim fundamentalists within their community. Period. It ain't pretty free speech. It ain't pleasant political talk. But, it is worthy opinion. Agree or disagree with the underlying assertion; and don't get so bent out of shape over the silly drama she purposely creates. It's her "job."

I disagree completely with what Ms. Coulter is presenting. It is hateful and destructive of community. The thing is, we live in a society that protects freedom of speech (within some limits) and the exchange of ideas. A university campus is one of the places that ought to recognize and protect such freedom, when the speech is pleasing, and when it is controversial and confrontational and even abhorent, as Ms. Coulter is.

If you don't have freedom of speech -- then you can't have Human Rights. Canada's so-called Human Rights Commission has been shown to be a far greater danger to our freedom anything some American commentator might express. True freedom comes from open unfettered debate. If one can't express any idea openly and have it challenged and subject to ridicule -- how can real freedom be maintained. The truth will eventually win any open, free debate.

A disdain for a system of democracy that took the beheading of kings, the American Civil War and 50 million dead in the defeat of fascism (amongst other things) to create. Perfect? Of course not. Ann Coulter is simply another in a long line of right-wing imbiciles. Rush Limbaugh praised the American health care system after his heart attack in Hawaii, not realizing that Hawaii has a socialized health care system like Canada's. Michael Steele, the head of the Republican National Committee, argued that gays shouldn't be allowed to marry because they would then be eligible for the same spousal benefits as straight people, apparently not realizing that if gays were straight and got married, they'd still cost money. And who can forget Sarah Pallin claiming that Africa is a country? Or Dan Quayle thinking that potato is spelled with an "e"? It goes on and on. As J.S. Mill once said, "Not all Conservatives are stupid. But most stupid people are Conservative." And least we think this kind of right-wing bufoonery only exists south of the border, remember that our own Stockwell Day hinks that the earth is 6,000 years old, and that people used to ride dinosaurs to work, like Fred Flintstone. If you think that Ann Coulter is making sense, consider the company she keeps.

Well, what should we really expect...moderate views and civility, much less common courtesy? Lets wake up and get real here Canada. Ann Coulter is an American conservative firebrand like Bill O'Reilly or Pat Robertson and the 700 club. Our nation is slowly leaning towards this type of political climate and most of us aren't even aware of it. The article states it was a 'stacked' audience in her favour; how many do you suppose were Conservatives, either supporters, members or MP's? Not all americans share her views I'm sure and the same can be said for Canadians, but those who yell the loudest, are the rudest, most inflammatory and are more effective at marshalling their troups get the soundbites, the coverage and the votes. All this being said Coulter has a right to her opinions and should not be kicked out of the country or banned from speaking here. If she runs afoul of our laws then she should be held accountable for it. After all aren't republicans and conservatives on either side of the border big on law and tough on crime and punishment?

I certainly don't agree with everything Coulter says or stands for but every thinking person should fight for her right to openly express her views and for the right of those who disagree to openly do so. That is the very essence of a democracy. The young Muslim woman mentioned in the story claims she was hurt when she asked a loaded question of a person whose views she already knew by reputation. She deliberately baited the speaker and got exactly what she wanted and she's now turning that into a "poor me" story in the press. The funny thing is that both she and Coulter are playing the same game and actually need each other's active participation to do it. Coulter is self-promoting through controversial, press-worthy statements to increase her appearance fees and her targets are capitalizing on that to evoke public sympathy and push back. I firmly believe that most people are smart enough to see through both sides of the choreography involved here. Those who will whine about racism will totally miss the entire point of the exchange.

Ignorance and racism are always hot sellers in tough times (look at 30s Germany - different ethnic group - same idea) - it puts the world into digestible chunks for the bottom feeders so they don't get upset and start eating the crayons.Thinkers are rare. The comments of the speaker obviously are over the top and innappropriate, but what this story needs to focus on is the fine line that we have to find between freedom of speech and political correctness. Coulter is obviously an idiot, however does that mean that she does not have the right to speak? The more you force people like this to be silent the more the resentment grows, what needs to happen is have an equal right for anyone to contest and prove the fallacy in her words, thoughts and ideas. Free speech is essential in a democracy and in a setting such as this it is important to maintain that.
