In a graphic gesture of solidarity with seal hunters, Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean swallowed a dripping chunk of seal heart as hundreds of Inuit looked on.

The tasting took place Monday at a community feast in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut.

Jean, on a week-long trip to the Arctic, knelt above a pair of seal carcasses and carved out the meat using a traditional ulu blade.

After slashing through the flesh, the Governor General turned to the woman beside her and asked: "Could I try the heart?"

Shortly thereafter, Jean was given a bloody piece of seal heart and ate it whole. She then grabbed a tissue to wipe her blood-soaked fingers.

"It's like sushi," she said. "And it's very rich in protein."

Jean said it was "absolutely delicious."

The gesture was met with dismay Tuesday by Humane Society International, which opposes the hunting of seals and supports a European Union ban on Canadian seal meat -- although Inuit are partly exempt from the ban.

"She may have innocently entered this politically-charged debate, but I find it hard to believe that in her position she would be unaware of the political controversy surrounding this," Rebecca Aldworth, director of HSI's Canadian branch, told CTV News Channel.

Earlier Monday, Jean had told a group of students at an assembly that she hoped there would be seal meat at the feast.

"We generally don't have seal meat at the community feast because it has to be fresh it's not always possible to guarantee fresh seal meat," Paul Waye, the town manager in Rankin Inlet, told CTV Newsnet on Tuesday.

"At that assembly, someone had heard her and they actually went out hunting that afternoon and caught a couple of seals and brought them to the feast that night."

Waye said it was a "very amazing experience" to have Jean as a guest.

"She was a delight to have in the community and her participation in the community feast was very well respected by the whole community," he said.

Waye said Jean had more than one piece of seal meat.

"She had seal blood up to her wrist so she was involved," he said.

Jean's participation went a long way build relations between locals and the government.

"To see someone, the head of state, come to Nunavut and participate in traditional activities it really strengthens ties and makes us feel a part of Canada again," Waye said.

Seal ban

Last month, the European Union voted to ban seal products. Inuit communities from Canada and Greenland are exempted in the bill but they still cannot engage in large-scale trading of seal products in Europe.

In Nunavut, locals say the ban will only add to the already troubled economic situation.

Jean said the hunt is practiced responsibly.

"These are ancient practices that are part of a way of life," she said.

"If you can't understand that, you're completely missing the reality of life here."

Paul Kaludjak, head of the agency implementing Nunavut's land claims agreement, said the value of seals makes up 20 per cent of his area's economic activity.

"It's hard to say how much will be lost because of this -- because it's early," Kaludjak said. "We'll find out in a matter of years."

Meanwhile, Jean is using her trip to push for a university in the North to help Inuit be a part of the economic growth in the region.

"I am totally convinced that this kind of infrastructure would be something worth considering," Jean told several town councillors.

"It's very important for those young people to see that (a degree) is possible, that it is accessible, not too far away from where they are.

As is usual in Canada, the "great unwashed" are ill informed. The Governor General is the Queen's representative...As such she does NOT get involved in politics!
It is extremely undignified for the Governor General to behave in this way. Her behaviour will certainly not impress the EU. Most Europeans know where Canada is on the map, but few have any desire to visit a backward and primitive country where such "savagery" still exists...and is condoned and promoted by the Government.

Contradiction here in how the world views Canada. On one hand we get poor ratings from other countries on how we treat our aboriginal people but on the other hand poor ratings with regard to how we treat seals?
In this day and age, we should be more sensitive/evolved & not kill seals unless for survival. Since many that kill the seals do it for sport/tradition, its no longer acceptable ethically to continue. & to all you incensitive P*^%'s that call others bleeding hearts, your ignorance & lack of humanity is un-Canadian & inhumaine. You just don't care, stuck in your own insensitive world, and nothing will change your minds.
...unless of course someone like Hannibal Lector beat your own kids with a bat & then feasted on a dripping chunk of their raw heart, using a traditional ulu blade (as they put it in the article)...doesn't sound so appetizing when its a baby human, as opposed to a baby seal, although Jack Kevorkian would disagree, and likely feast on aborted human baby heart.. The concerns about the COMMERCIAL seal hunt have nothing to do with whether or not seals are cute. Most people against the seal hunt also do not agree with the way veal cows are raised. Many are also vegetarian, and care about cows and chickens being treated inhumanely. The ban is to deal with the COMMERCIAL seal hunt in Canada, whereby more than 300,000 seals are slaughtered for their FUR only (their carcasses are left behind after they are skinned - and they are often skinned alive!). Most Canadians are not against the Inuit hunting for their survival - this is not the same thing as killing seals for fashion, which is disgusting. Michaelle Jean just lost any respect I had for her.

So she tastes a little seal heart - kind of ironic given the 'bleeding hearts' who have commented on the seal hunt here!

Bottom line should be that its okay to kill and eat whatever a culture wants, so long as its done humanely, and not for profit. I for one oppose dear hunting, but again if those who do it are doing it for the food and also use the rest (rather than 'trophy hunters') then so be it.

The opposition to the seal hunt is really about the mass killing of seals for their pelts.

Now, where is the veal...

I think the GG set a great example for Canadians and the World by making this symbolic gesture towards trying out, in a very small way, the Inuit way of life.

We in the south are so disconnected from the traditions of the Inuit and First Nations, it is no wonder they feel alienated in their own country.

Its good that the GG is acknowledging the way of life for the Inuit and she respect it. As far as seal hunting goes, if has been going on for hundreds and hundreds of years, who are we to ban or protest against it just because they are cute. If the seals are in the food chain just like fish, chicken, beef and etc, let the Inuits or other seal hunters continue. Who knows, seals just may end up on the menu of MacDonalds or KFC or some other fast food chain. Actually, that would be better than eating processed foods which are contaminated with listeria or salmonella or rat/rodent droppings.

People are blurring the lines here, either intentionally or unintentionally. The EU's ban on seal products has nothing to do with the Inuit's right to hunt seals FOR FOOD, it's to ban the COMMERCIAL hunting of seals for pelts and other products. Note that the article says the Inuit are exempt from the ban, they just can't engage in "large-scale" trade of seal products with Europe. Nothing is going to be lost other than money... the Inuit will go on eating seal as they always have, they just won't be able to sell it.

There is more to the seal hunt than a sound bite from Paul McCartney and if you read a book now and again, you might know that. If the European Union wants to give back all the tons of cod they've stolen over the years so the excess seal population wouldn't starve to death, then maybe we can talk. As for the US, just as soon as you ban trophy hunting, pit lamping, etc, then come back and talk to us about our 'inhumane' seal hunt. In the meantime, I applaud her for showing that, although it may be unpopular, she is willing to put human lives first. There's no walmart down the street for the Inuit to get jobs and buy meat. But you'd need to know something about Canada or own an atlas to figure that out.

Things will work themselves out without us, believe it or not.

There's nothing inhumane about the Inuit seal hunt. Nothing more inhumane than the thousands of hunters every fall who go deer and moose hunting, or the hundreds of thousands of people who fish every weekend all across the country. This is food for these people, and a source of economy for them. They use every bit of the seals they kill, which they kill in a quick, effective way. This is less inhumane than the chicken and livestock industry which most of us just take as par for the course. It's not an endangerment to a species, so why ban it? I don't like the hakapik either, but the Inuit people are running a different system up there, and they shouldn't be punished because some weeping hearts have seen a few too many PETA commercials.

Now there is a Governor General with balls of pure steal (even though steal is a mixture of other metals).

She is beyond correct in her stand and exhibition of traditional Inuit practices of life. How can the world decide to condemn a culture’s way of life that has been practicing for millennia without first understanding why? I think that Michaelle Jean has made this publicity stunt so that the world could understand that "why", although I am like to criticize the author of this article. Throughout it seems that this reporter has a Pro-Ban stance instead of helping to expropriate the good that this annual hunt has on a community that struggles every day due to lack of government and national care.

We should all take the time and invest an interest in every corner of this country so that we can better ourselves and in turn better the world. The Inuit way of life is ancient and sacred: perhaps we would all do better to look with in ourselves to find out ancient ways of life and learn to appreciate what little we have culturally.

And yes, fresh seal heart tastes a lot like Sushi.

Roger, why don't you go visit a local slaughterhouse and then come back and talk about inhumane slaughter practices. The seal hunt is no more inhumane than hunting deer. The only difference is that you can see the blood on the ice. Can't see a deer bleed in the forest or a cow bleed on a dark concrete floor.

Oh wait...a cow isn't "cute."

Groan.

Your heart strings are being tugged by organizations that protest they hunt because they know there are people out there are gullible as you and who will gladly fund them to the tune of millions of dollars, a fraction of which they spend on the seal hunt protest.

They're taking you to the cleaners. Learn the facts before spewing forth the lies and propaganda.

If you want to save the seals then stop climate change, because that will decimate the seal herd in the decades to come. The hunt won't even come close to putting a dent. In fact, if there's no hunt, there will be a cull simply because there are TOO MANY seals out there.

As for the EU, they're hypocrites. I don't see them stopping the bullfights, ending the production of veal or fois gras or halting the marmot cull in Germany.

Learn your facts.

Take a count on how many people would say "Yes try the meat it's really good and it's not cooked", NO THANKS I'll pass, why is so important to eat the Seal meat enough of the seal hunt, might as well go and hunt the Polar Bears too.

Is this really a big deal? I can't wait for all the hypocrites to come out and speak about how inhumane this is. One way or another that seal population is going to have to be maintained. Let all those who use NO animal products throw the first stone. And if you're a vegetarian than I hope you're eating off your own garden and not one of the large organic farms that have destroyed thousands of acres of wildlife habitat, some of it for endangered species.

I think a few of you city dwellers should get out of the city more. This isn't even news worthy. I've eaten raw meat as well. On the farm we ate heart all the time.....from many different animals. albeit cooked. However, from time to time, one tasted it raw. So what.
SO high and mighty are those who judge others, eh?

SO-WHAT !

To you BLEEDING HEARTS ---

Where do you think Veal comes from...quite little BABY cows with big brown eyes.
Think about it ..!
Ever wonder about those tiny chickens you see in the grocery stores , or go to a pig roast and cook up a small pigglet THOSE poor little piggies.
Give your tiny little minds a good cleaning .
What you see in the news about the blood on the ice is no different then the inside a slauder house.

This is an exceptionally slanted piece from CTV. It's one thing to report what happened, but your article stinks of personal bias. The GG ate some seal, big whoop, nobody reports when the lady has a bowl of All Bran or some Sushi. Also, people who don't know anything about population ecology have no idea of the large numbers of seal, or that clubbing them is the most humane (yes, really, humane!) way of killing them (immediately severs the brain stem).

After this, Stephen Harper's going to be afraid to go ask Michaelle Jean for any more favours :D.

For the record, I appreciate the GG's gesture. It shows far more guts than anything our elected politicians have done to protect our sealing industry. Literally.

It shows more of a inhumane side of Seal Hunting. The support is good for the Native people since it is in their culture but not for the country.

STOP & BAN seal hunt products.

For the G.G. to eat bloodied uncooked seal in front of the cameras is nothing but a publicity stunt. To suggest that a university be built there is again more for publicity. Who is going to fund it.How many are going to attend. Who will pay for the subsidized teachers. She will say anything and do anything just to endear herslf to the Inuits.

I'd be curious to see the short-list to replace her as she begins her last year. PCO vetters must be going hog wild to find someone else as we speak.

Nostalgically, I'd be interested to see Prince William take on a five-year mandate.

I love it. If these seals were ugly looking beasts no one would have a problem with the hunt, but they see a cute little seal with big eyes and can't understand why anyone would kill it. Last time I looked a baby cow was kinda cute too. So stupid, good job GG!
