The host of a Fox News program has apologized for a segment on the Canadian military that Defence Minister Peter MacKay called "disgusting" and "crass."

A group of pundits on "Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld," which airs weekdays at 3 a.m. on Fox News, each took turns trashing Canada and its military during an episode that aired on March 17.

Gutfeld mocked Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie, chief of land staff, who suggested in early March that the military may need a year-long break in operations due to personnel and equipment shortages.

"Once their Afghan mission winds down sometime in 2011, certain members of the Canadian military are looking to take a much-deserved break. And by certain members I mean all of them," Gutfeld said.

"Meaning, the Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white Capri pants."

Gutfeld issued an apology Monday afternoon saying, "I realize that my words may have been misunderstood. It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize."

But the host also seemed to defend his program, adding "Red Eye is a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humorous and ridiculous manner."

In the four-minute segment, Gutfeld asked the other three members of his panel: "Isn't this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country? They have no army!"

Panelist Doug Benson, a comedian, replied: "I didn't even know they were in the war. I thought that's where you go when you don't want to fight. Go chill in Canada."

Benson was due to perform at an Edmonton comedy club in April, but that gig has been cancelled after threats were received about his performance.

MacKay expresses anger

In an interview with CTV Newsnet earlier on Monday, MacKay expressed his anger over the comments and demanded an apology.

"It's crass, it's insensitive, it's in fact disgusting given the timing where Canada is just receiving back four fallen heroes here at CFB Trenton," MacKay said.

On Friday, Master Cpl. Scott Vernelli, 28, Cpl. Tyler Crooks, 24, Trooper Jack Bouthillier, 20, and Trooper Corey Joseph Hayes, 22, were killed in two separate IED blasts that injured another five soldiers.

The deaths bring the total number of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan to 116.

MacKay said the Canadian government will be demanding an apology from the panel and from Fox.

"There should be an apology -- to the families in particular, and to the Canadian Forces and to Canada generally -- given the sacrifice and the commitment that we've demonstrated in Afghanistan."

Earlier Monday, Conservative strategist Geoff Norquay said the comments on the show were insulting to Canadian soldiers and show that the host was ignorant of the fact that Canadian troops have been working hard in Afghanistan.

"What could anybody with common sense say about his kind of trash? It's ignorant, it's inappropriate, it's insulting," Norquay said during an interview on Canada AM. "It's insulting to the 116 Canadian troops who have given their lives and paid the supreme sacrifice while we've been in Afghanistan."

While the controversial comments were made nearly a week ago, they have only come to light in Canada in recent days.

An outraged Canadian posted the clip from the show to YouTube with a comment that says, "Fox News belittles and mocks the Canadian military." It goes on to say: "These are the people who keep Americans up to date and mis-informed."

Norquay said he hopes Canadians who subscribe to Fox News will cancel those subscriptions and that Canadian advertisers will cancel their business with the network.

While I am inclined to say something like "That's such an American Comment" I must refrain from painting the nation to the south with an equally broad brush. Instead, i would simply ask for a meaningful retraction and use the opportunity to share in our collective grief over the senseless loss of life from war.

I am so totally disgusted with the comments made. First off Gutfield's name should be Gutless. How dare he make fun of our Canadian Troops. This man and his country are suppose to be Allies. "Gutless" states that he was misunderstood. Tell that to the 116 men or so who have died while serving alongside his fellow countrymen. I would like you to sit in a room with our fallen soldierss families and make those satrical comments to them. Lets see if they will find you funny! As for Doug Benson's comment of "That's where you go when you don't want to fight" He did get that right. They did and they were known as AMERICAN DRAFT DEODGERS" The same fellow American soldiers that you wanted to penalize for not wanting to be part of YOUR ARMY! I feel they owe Canadians more than an apoligy they should be banned from the air.

This is a war against all of Western civilization declared by the leaders of a huge segment of the World.

The Taliban or whatever label you want to attach to this group doesn't see one bit of difference between any member of any Western nation, American or not. They would just as soon slit yours and your childrens throat as those of any American.

What's wrong with us fighting in a country so that it's citizens can eventually enjoy the same rights as us.

Anyone who thinks you can talk to these people are misinformed. Look at the response your Obama the annointed one, got from Iran.

President Obama praised our country not that long ago and I believe strongly that he should apologize to Canada and as for those bozo's their show should be cancelled. I am very upset at the US right now. And all of us Canadiens who right now have very heavy hearts and sadness for our four brave men who just came back home after dying in action should insist on an apology like I said from the President on down. Out here in Edmonton the Comedy Strip just cancelled 5 sold out shows by so called comedian Doug Benson( the one who didn't know Canada was in the War.) The nerve of this stoner to insult our counry on television then show up and expect to get paid. I urge all of my fellow Canadians to email other venues that may consider bringing this no talent in to our country. America is going broke lets hit them in the pocket book, boycott Fox News and any corporation stupid enough to advertise with them.

It is a truly sad commentary made by these people on the Fox show. It reminds us of the unfortunate but true view we Canadians have of SOME Americans, ...their sheer arrogance and obvious ignorance of the world beyond their borders is once again put in the spotlight. All these Americans know is usually restricted to US news and information, which is by nature restrictive, censored and quite biased. They usually ignore their Cousins to the North. Fox News should issue a retraction, censure/censor the host and forbid the re-appearance of the guests invited. Then, Fox networks should make some reparations to Canada in light of the fact that their television signal unfortunately comes up here.

C'mon America! Grow-Up Already! If you can't play with your neighbours, life will get more and more miserable, as nobody will want to play with you! This juvenile comment is the basic attitude we need to take with Ignorant and Arrogant Americans!

An apology doesn't cut it. The unprofessional actions of Greg Gutfeld and his co-horts shows the ignorance of their views and should not be on the air poisoning the minds of young men and women who are able to view programs such as these. Fox News and Greg Gutfeld should be ashamed of themselves and all of them should be on the front lines for a couple of months to see what the soldiers in Afghanistan are going through and not just our Canadian soldiers but all of the soldiers. And to comment "that now would be a good time to invade this "ridiculous" country because they have no army" further shows the unprofessionalism of this talk show host and his panel. Hiding behind what his show signifies is just as ignorant as his comments. There is nothing satirical about men dying for the safety and freedom of all of us. And to Doug Benson "you bet we're in the war" and 116 lives may be nothing to you but to this country it's heroism at it's finest. I don't think I have ever been so angry at the comments made by such imbiciles nor have I ever felt such sorrow for the families of our fallen heroes. I pray that our prayers throughout this fine country will help those families open their hearts and let God in to help them heal and forgive. I also need His help right now because I'm not in a very forgiving mood but I will be once all of this hype dies down. Fox News is off of my viewing list.

Humor or not, I am in the military myself, I consider all whom have had an unfortunate faith as well as present members as a part of my family. What was said on this show was not called for, it came at a time when we are receiving four more casualties of war. There is no good time for such ignorance as families are still mourning the loss of their loved ones since this war began. Not only does this affect our present serving military members, but also our veterans whom fought in the second world war whom have already suffered enough.
I do agree with previous comment, the people that really matter in America really do know that we are giving well over 110% in Afghanistan and then some.
I say to the Canadian people, keep supporting our troops, believe in them in their efforts for this type of support is what fuels our troops to make a difference.

I cannot believe any network in any country would allow such ill informed and disgraceful commentary.

We brought back four dead Canadian soldiers today, a scene that has been repeated over and over again. The overpasses along the Highway of Heroes were lined with Canadians out of repect for our soldiers. Time and time again, without regard for the weather, Canadians line these bridges in silent tribute.

The comments on Fox are grossly insensitive, and reflect profound ignorance of the reality that proportionately many more Canadians soldiers are likely to be killed in Afghanistan than Americans in Iraq.

Isn't it time that shows like this one, however obscure, understand that such comments are a terrible reflection on the US and do a disservice to both countries.

Wouldn't you think that the US would do better helping out NATO in Afghanistan than chasing phony weapons of mass destruction elsewhere?

I just had a friend come home today from Afghanistan after a long tour of duty (yes, Im from Canada), we greeted him with open arms and tears as we havent seen him in months.ALOT of people showed up. Especially since he left his family and job and such to fight with his American buddies. I am going to see him tomorrow and thank him for his contribution for his peacekeeping in that country. He deserves it!! :)

I dont know if I mentioned this part yet, but my friend came home this afternoon in a casket with a Canadian Flag on it. One of four BRAVE men to help the US uphold their peace arriving this afternoon.
So to the members of your team, especially Greg Gutfeld. Keep p the great work!
And if it wasnt for the fact I am crying my eyes out right now for a friend I will NEVER see again, except for in a cemetary, I am sure I would be laughing much more.

This is typical American attitude, and it is very typical Fox News attitude, after all what other respected news corporation would allow a person like Greg Gutfeld who has a IQ that is equal to that of a peanut to have his own talk show, and to let him rant on about something that he thinks he knows, when in fact he has very little knowledge of. After all this man properly thinks that Canada is located south of the United States, and it is because of this American ignorance that makes the United States hated by so many people.

If the US, Fox News, and Greg Gutfeld think that Canada’s young soldiers who have sacrifices their lives for peace in Afghanistan is a big joke and something to laugh about late at night, then I believe that all military personal from all counties that are in Afghanistan; except those from the USA should pull out and let the so called great USA handle it on their own “Bastards”.

"My words may have been misunderstood" - what words could we have misunderstood?

What part of "Once their Afghan mission winds down sometime in 2011, certain members of the Canadian military are looking to take a much-deserved break. And by certain members I mean all of them," Gutfeld said.

"Meaning, the Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white Capri pants."

do we NOT understand?

In his apology he is laughing at Canadians for being less than intelligent.

This is not satire, it is downright rude and shows his ignorance. What troubles me is that few if any Americans came to our defence - where is President Obama support for our troops.

We live next door.If I had a choice,I'd move thsi great nation somewhere else.I'm sure Amwericans would love to have Russia,or China on their northern border at the same time as they're under attack on thier southern border.
I'm actually a bit pro USA most of the time.I don't envy their role in the world.
But,for the last couple of decades I've been becoming increasingly concerned about how integrated our countries are becoming.I am very mindful of the fact that good fences build good neighbours. And I continue to believe we need to support NATO and the UN.THere is work to do on this planet and we need to help.
Instead of courting allies in the USA,we should quit whining, and quietly go about re-building our economy, paying down debt, building our military capacity, and looking for allies in NATO and the UN.We will NEVER find many people in the USA who give a rats behind about Canada.Or any other nation outside of their borders. It is,for them, all about the power to dominate the world.
Oddly, the Liberal party that spews the anti USA rhetoric,is the one that refuses to support our military, and fights long and hard to keep us mired in debt, and highly taxed. These are not good recipes for a sovereign Canada. We can't just shut off the gas,so to speak. But if we do it the right way,our children or our grandchildren may be able to.
Don't forget, the Liberal government NEVER once appologized for the anti USA crap they spew out to win elections. And they NEVER follow policies that can free us from American domination.NEVER.
Anyway,it will soon be China in charge.More money and a bigger military.Good work America.

Let me see. What would a Canadian soldier be doing during a one-year operational pause? How about putting in extra hours away from their family to maintain weapons and equipment? Or leaving their families to attend training to maintain operational readiness? What about doing their best to maintain their own strength and fitness? What about doing their best to be ready for whatever next mission their country asks them to? They may even take the time to mourn their fallen brothers and sisters. Fox News

You could enlighten your view of the world by reading up on how your brave
American pilots killed four Canadian soldiers and wounded many others some
years ago in Afghanistan? What's more, your pilots repeated this same
stupidity a while later with less tragic results.

You could also read up on how Yanks did the same in WWII. I know a Canadian
veteran whose limb was blown off by American air crews at Falaise Gap
[that's in France]; he told me a joke from that war: When the British flew,
the Germans ducked; when the Canadians bombed, the Germans ducked; but when
the Americans flew, everybody ducked. Hell, an entire Polish tank unit
fighting with the Canadians got wiped out by Yank air crews--another heroic
deed never portrayed by Hollywood.

You could also approach the White House for info on the presidential
citations given Canadian units for aiding and rescuing your soldiers in a
number of conflicts, including Afghanistan.

You say you offer satire? You haven't the intelligence to attempt satire,
let alone offer it. It's fortunate for the world that most Americans are
many, many points brighter than you, your ham-fisted staff, and your guests.

Greg J. Edwards

PS: You might also read up on how your own armed forces are scraping for
fresh recruits to man their own worn out equipment to go after those
"weapons of mass destruction" that your former president fooled you all into
believing were in Iraq. Fortunate for we Canucks, our prime minister at the
time, Jean Chretien [French for John Christian], didn't eat your president's
shovel stuff, meaning that we don't have troops chasing ghosts in Iraq.

If people watched the show for more than the 30 seconds it took to give them an excuse to go on this tirade I'm sure their next protests would be against Greg's musical matchups or they'd be sending letters protesting Andy's treatment of King Albert II.

By this standard any American whose ever seen Rick Mercers talking to Americans segments can assume all Canadian are pretentious snobs and go on their merry way never bothering to learn the truth about Mercer or Candians. I received a phone call from Mr. John Moody, Sr. VP of News and the boss to Greg Gutfeld well before the news agency knew that an apology was coming.

When I questionned this man (Moody) about how he could let his host and the other co-hosts make a mockery of our military, Mr. Moody began to comment that The Red Eye was a satire. I advised Mr. Moody that he had begun this conversation off on the wrong foot and that there is nothing satirical about 4 dead soliders returning home to Canada today. He was unaware that this was happening - again another question that I could not understand. A news organization that does not know what is happening in the world, especially with their largest partner is almost everything.

I asked Mr. Moody if he was going to have Mr. Gutfeld appear on the major news agencies, including our own Canadian ones (CBC and CTV). Again I was given the comment that the remarks were made on "The Red Eye" and that is where he would make his statement.

Mr. John Moody and Mr. Greg Gutfeld (along with the other uneducated, lack of integrity, common sense co-hosts) fail to realize that to make a sincere apology for their comments means that you do not justify your position.

I can only hope that our Canadian government, our party leaders including the opposition, stand up and say that this is unacceptable.

We deserve a better apology then what we received. We as Canadians as a whole; but more importantly to our military, their families and to the 116 who are now home.

Conservatives in America have problems now.

November 2006 they loose both houses of Congress

November 2008 they get destroyed in the Presidential election and the Democrats pick up even more seats in Congress.

Jan/Feb 2009 they loose a key Minnesota Senate Seat giving the Democrats a veto-prof majority in Congress.

February 2009 sniping between talk radio Icon Rush Limbaugh and newly minted GOP Chairman Michael Steele has people thinking that the American right is committing suicide meanwhile the Obama administration gets a handy diversion.

Jan/Feb/Mar 2009 "Stimulus Packages" are passing congress and somestathouses ushering a new era of Keynesianism.

Now some punk does to Fox News what Heather Malick couldn't do to CBC, that is completely discret the network abroad.

So who's going to want to carry the GOP banner in the presidential election of 2012?

The Republicans and conservatives stateside are pretty much where the Progressive Conservatives were uphere in the early to mid 1990s. All looks lost, however I wouldn't count them out yet. Conservatives stateside are organized and all they need is time.

For heaven's sake, the man jokes about keeping his houseboy chained in his basement - this is his style of humor. Not to everyone's taste, certainly, but obviously not to be taken seriously. And in the outrage, everyone is missing his point - that a country that cannot keep 1,000 combat troops in theatre for any prolonged period of time cannot, in any real sense of the term, be said to have a proper (by proper I mean properly sized) military. I am so tired of thin skinned, self righteous, easily offended Canadians who then go on to rant about how 'stupid' Americans are. No irony there, eh?

One should invite Fox to check the timelines of both World Wars and note that in the first they continued to trade with the enemy and only jumped in at the the last minute so “they” could claim victory. Much the same was being done in WW2 until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour which forced the US into the war. The day after “Pearl” it was British, Australian and Canadian troops that attempted to fend off over 200,000 Japanese troops in an attempt to save Hong Kong! Strange, however that it was the U.S. and not the Allies that won both Wars. Oh well they can always claim Grenada as a victory!

Just to clarify right at the outset; my heart breaks for the families of our fallen Canadian heroes and I am very proud of all of our very brave men and women that have enlisted to defend our country, but lets keep some perspective here. This guy is a virtual no name TV hack trying to work his way up the show business ladder. It doesn't excuse his offensive comments but please people, it's not like the words came from the U.S. Secretary of State or Defense. I'm pretty sure I've heard the same kind of trash talk on This Hour, Air Farce or the Mercer Report and nobody seemed to make it a national issue.

I'm guessing the Cons are just trying to pre-empt the inevitable attempt by the opposition parties to try and make it into another frivolous "international incident" that Harper has again failed to respond appropriately to. If that is the case, good on you Peter McKay for heading them off at the pass before millions of dollars have to be spent to set up yet another inquiry to investigate how the Conservatives could allow such a thing to happen without demanding a full apology.

The U.S. is of no consequence
said

Right Wing America, faith based Americans and Fox News especially is trying to deflect the image that the U.S. is of no consequence anymore - thanks to the group of poop they propped up for 8 years.

Is the U.S. in any position to judge other nations? No. They lost that right about 6 years ago, when they lied to the world to go to a war in Iraq. They lost that right when they have used torture on prisoners (to what end? they certainly didn't get any intelligence to find Osama).

Americans will have to learn they will have to work damn hard to get any ounce of respect back that they had in the mid to late 90's… thankfully with the election of Obama some have sent a signal that they are trying… then you get nitwits like fox tearing down any progress they have made.

One says something ridiculous and outlandish, and then the next one tries to say something even more ridiculous to try to be funny. Occasionally something they say even is funny.

The main point is these are not a group of serious newscasters. They are just comedians who comically brag they insult everyone for a laugh and literally do.
Just be happy we're not Belgium - they get lots, and no one from the group has probably ever been there, or knows where it is.

What saddens me as a Canadian is that people choose to make comments and form opinions on the basis of preconceived prejudices without looking into the facts; and by that I'm not talking about the Red Eye cast.

Red Eye is about as much a news program as the Tonight Show. It's takes a satirical look at current events and they intentionally go over the top; no matter what the subject matter.

I missed this episode but the next segment was just as likly to discuss a trade war with China or the latest episode of "Planet Unicorn".

Greg and Bill (the only full time panelists) have both worked for Maxim, Stuff and various other magazines. They are hardly what anyone with a second to do some research would consider news anchors, and they don't pretend to be.

They do occasionally have serious guests on, but even when a Congressman or Governor comes on the topics will range from tax policy to what the best type of gag to use on Greg's pool boy.

The fact that this segment happened in the same week as 4 soldiers were killed may make them seem mean spirited but the segement aired 3 days prior to the tragedy in Afghanistan. The timing was regretable but honestly, when one of the leaders of major military comes forward and says that their entire armed forces will effectively be taking a year off I find it impossible to believe they won't be made fun of.

I would also like to see Andy Levy's "Half-Time" report from this show, for the full story. And if you don't know what I'm talking about you really shouldn't be commenting.

Funny. While I agree that an apology is warranted, one has to admit that Canadians are getting a good taste of their own medicine. How many times have we heard jokes about Italians, French, German, etc... troops, soldiers, etc... in other wars? (After all many more civilians and troops of the said countries died than all North Americans put together). How many wise cracks? Fact is, that most North Americans (Canadians included) are completely ignorant about the facts of any war because most of the history is learned from Hollywood, not veterans.

I agree with Greg in the Hammer this is not a serious news program. There are many Americans who appreciate what Canadian soldiers have done.

I believe Greg Gutfeld and the other comedians on the panel personally respect the Canadian military.

You see many comedy shows that make fun of things that should not be made fun of. But I'm sure these comedians personally don't feel the way their talking about whatever they're making fun of.

But the only way to stop it is not to laugh at these types of jokes.

To show the Canadian soldier that we care, we should send more letters to let them know that we think their peace work is making a difference. Even if we sent a letter before.

Also, when you pass by a Canadian soldier on the street that is back from their mission give them a smile. Or let them know that you support them.

We should also respect the American soldiers in Iraq who have done alot to help the people in Iraq too!

Also the other soldiers from other countries too!

Here's an idea to consider. Contact your cable supplier and ask them if they can take FOX out of their packages or at least make it an option to do so for all subscribers, so you have true choice to exercise your voice of displeasure at Fox.

Plan B- find out who their major advertisers are and tell them you wont be supporting their businesses if they continue to advertise on Fox......

Until Canada gets a full apology and an declaration that they wont insult their neighbours in such a ignornant manner in the future.

If I was Fox/Robert Murdoch I would fire the panel but they wont do that. But it would be good to put their feet to the fire by asking them to do so or face any consequence we can pose.

I am sure most Americans are equally appalled at Fox.

Second, we haven't gone around the globe antagonizing other nations and cultivating enemies. Per capita Canada has contributed more than our share of lives and resources to help out with a problem which we didn't create. You would do well to keep in mind that it was you Americans who were attacked on your own soil, not us. I think we have to show ourselves as being above this level of ignorance and insensitivity. If we condemm an entire nation of most great people,we become as ignorant os these fools.
I agree, that this is one subject which most civilized people see as being off limits for jokes.I can't imagine what went throught any brain matter that they are assumed to have between thier ears.I wold suggest that they educate themselves before making any more forays into the realm of political comedy.
I travel in the USA several times per year. The real people there are great people.True, they don't knw a lot about Canada. But,not surprisingly, most are very engaging when you get into discussions on any issue of the day. And,are also quite surprised to find that Vancouver is not up to it's elbows in snow in the middle of July.
Yes.We have something we feel we should be angry about. But let's not blame American citizens to much. They do a lot of good in the world.Sadly, their education system is lacking on foreign affairs, and their government, like ours,is not always very forthcoming.
Do us all a favour.Go meet some of them.Engage in some relevant conversations, and in the very polite Canadian way, show them who we really are.
Most will be very friendly and pleasantly surprised. In fact, you might find some new friends. They, like the people in Toronto, think they are the universe. Not because they're evil, but because that's what they've been taught.
If you go there expecting to meet a lot of mean and nasty people, you will be disappointed.REAL Americans are just not like that.

It is also outrageous that Fox would allow someone on its payroll to spout such garbage.
Seems to me we have had Americans cross to Canada to avoid serving in the military - you don't see Canadians running to the States to hide.
It appears that he has forgotten that it was the US that started the conflicts throughout the middle east - it is our military that is cleaning up the mess - at an enormous price.

Growing up in a military family is one that I am so proud of and I take great offense to the outrageous commentary made by these so-called “journalists”. It is not only insulting and degrading; it is also immature and ludicrous. The slanderous remarks are particularly hurtful to the thousands and thousands of military soldiers and their families; many of whom have lost loved ones. It was uncalled for. This is a letter I emailed to every Fox News corporate contact, as well as the NY Post (an affiliate) I could find, and to Mr Gutfeld as well...

Good Afternoon,

As an insulted Canadian, I felt a duty to write in with my concerns regarding comments on Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld aired March 17 2009. Please find copied below the email sent to the program. I hope that an apology will be aired soon. I have copied this to other corporate press contacts.

Good Afternoon Mr. Gutfeld;

I would like to express my insult and disgust with the mocking and attacks on our military involvement in Afghanistan.

As a Canadian who does not support this war, I do however fully support the men and women willing to risk their lives in a war that the United States of America started and then abandoned. On the day that your program aired, our military was making preparations to send home 4 fallen soldiers.

It was disgusting that not only you hold our military in such disregard for what they are actually doing, but that you and your entire panel showed the blatant ignorance for your closest alli and trade partner. Everyone of those comments were grossly misinformed and obtuse, and they have outraged every single Canadian. I certainly hope they've outraged Americans as well.

Please keep in mind Mr. Gutfeld, that Canada is the main supplier of your heat, electricity and fuel; best not to bite the hand that feeds.

I can appreciate your comments but you need to look into what is meant when Canada says the military needs to 'take a year off'. No one is leaving the Afghan mission. I might poiint out what you supposedly already know: The border with Pakistan is the hottest region in Afghanistan. Everyone knows this.. There are 3 nations covering it. Britain, the US and Canada. What's wrong with that picture? Why isn't France, 3rd largest expensive military, largest European military -- why isn't France lifting a rifle like piddly little Canada is? This is the point Todd. We've been fighting there as hard as anyone as your ally and this is the respect we get?

You say you don't like Fox yet you've completely swallowed this "Year off" misunderstanding so while you don't like them, you accept what they say as fact when it's ridiculously wrong. This is the problem we have with it. As this story points out, this aired on the very day 4 more dead Canadian soldiers came home. So lets just stop with this "year off" stuff, ok?

They believe they have a divine right to make fun of "lesser" countries but are profoundly offended if the same happens to them, they're the bully who laughs at the expense of others. So these Fox News people think it's funny that we are a peaceful country, not wanting to be perpetually at war like they love to be (check out their sordid history). Um, our military actually kind of sucks (in comparison to other countries) . No controversy. Not even really a big deal given that most Canadians vote for the parties that don't really care too much about our military.

We want to be known for our healthcare not our army. Want good healthcare? You got to cut somewhere and as Canadians we have chosen to cut the military (by choosing parties that don't like spending on the military).

And everybody needs to take a chill pill and stop being so politcally correct to the point of absolute stupidity.

On a personal note I think the Canadian military is very good for the incredibly crappy support that they get.

This incident goes beyond anything I could have dreamed from any United States citizen. Perhaps they are from somewhere else like a different planet, but that lets them off the hook too easily. Those two people Greg & Doug, who look like adults have proven very adequately how ignorant they are, children would not have been so cruel. It would be the greatest gift to our Canadian Military, the families of our fallen heroes and the Canadian public, to learn that Greg Gutfeld was fired and that the panelist Doug Benson was forever banned from any TV show on any channel.
It is easy to ask for an apology but I doubt they are smart enough to get it right. To say, as a Canadian, that I am deeply offended, is the biggest understatement ever. 116 soldiers have given their lives all in the name of freedom. I guess that means they were protecting the rights of these two idiots, who have the right to freedom of speech and expression - Our men and women are dedicated soldiers who stepped up to the plate, shoulder to shoulder with the United States and lest we forget, the Brits and Aussies.

I have family wintering in Florida, and it came as a shock to me when I was told that most of their American neighbours were unaware that Canadians are fighting and dying in Afghanistan. When Canada refused to join the U.S. attack on Iraq, Americans were angry and hurt. Although they've since regretted the decision to invade, that is the last time our military made national headlines in the U.S. Although Fox News certainly does not represent the majority of American views, the deafening silence from Washington regarding our military contributions perpetuates the myth that Canada has been sitting on the sidelines. Our brave soldiers deserve recognition and respect. It would go a long way to repairing relations and garnering goodwill if President Obama were to make a statement on the matter.

As much as Gutfeld is a pompous jerk, I fully agree with him. What kind of nation do you have when your military needs to take a year long break?

Jesus, just be thankful you aren't in the same geographical position Pakistan, India, Turkey, Iran or other nations are who share borders with hostile nations. Imagine one of those nations "taking a year off" and see how quickly their enemies take advantage of that.

Canada is lucky to share their border with the only global super power. Your military is not always on it's toes, not always fighting and not always dieing.

For a nation like Canada to be burned out after only a decade (half of which was spent in Kabul in Camp Julien. Yes, I served there with the US Army right beside you guys), is just mind boggling.

How can a G8 nation be like this when 3rd world nations have been actively fighting and defending their borders from hostile nations (sometimes bigger than them) for centuries?

I'm not saying Canada should be ashamed, but you should really start to look at yourselves and the state you're in before you point fingers at someone who is (although being distasteful) stating the obvious.

My comments are directed towards the remarks made by the Fox News' Red Eye Hosts.
Personally I was very offended by the comments made. I currently have a family member based out of CFB Petawawa fighting the war in Afghanistan. Also the timing was inappropriate considering we have just lost four more soldiers. Our soldiers have the right and deserve a well needed break, they do not work a nine to five job. Everyday our soldiers put their lives on the line, separated form their homes and loved ones. Mocking Our troops is just down right inconsiderate and degrading. I am a firm believer that "If you are not willing to stand behind our Troops Than You should stand in front of them." I think the hosts of fox red eye should have to give more than just an apology. To me that is just a slap in the wrist and nobody really learns from it. I think a more consequential punishment should be put in place. Those responsible should have to pay some sort of fine, loss of their jobs, and even imprisonment.
My Heart and condolences go out to the families of our most recent fallen soldiers.

Thank You.

The Fox network is the first to attempt this new official form of torture, using its prime 3 AM slot for a test drive.

Hooked ... line and sinker. Canadians are tortured with this new method.

Give it a rest, already.

Lighten up, people, Red Eye is SATIRE, as the mention of "white capri pants" should tell you. But his point is valid - Canada has come to a poor state if we can barely field 1,000 troops in the field. As brave as our troops may be, there are simply too few of them. Blame the government all you want, but generations of Canadians chest thumping about how we are a "peacekeeping" nation with no need for any real compat capacity are equally complicit in the shameful decline of our military. This is not to denigrate our brave troops in uniform, but think about it: the US is about to transfer ANOTHER 30,000 troops in country, and people still talk about Canada doing the "heavy lifting" in Afghanistan? We need to double the size of our Armed Forces and fund them accordingly, but many of the same folks screeching here would be the first to protest about doubling the military's budget. Give your heads a shake folks.

If we're all here to contribute to Fox-related news shows, then here is my piece:

Dear Fox News:

Come on, just admit it. You're not CNN. It's okay to be jealous - every one experiences jealousy at least once in their lives.

Sure, CNN is insanely popular with profoundly more respect than you (Fox News). And yes, they have anchors (Cooper, Blitzer, King, etc.)that are more well known than Fox anchors (...uh...). And, yes, if there had to be a television in an American politician's room, they would likely request the television be turned to CNN and not Fox.

But who needs them, right? You guys are Fox News - the less popular and less qualified news media outlet as compared to CNN. You guys need idiots like Greg Gutfeld to prop up your viewerships. And since everyone watches CNN most of the time, the only window of opportunity for you guys is the 3 AM window. So go grasp that chance and look like something - you guys need it!

Because apparently with the Red Eye Show with Greg Gutfeld, Fox News doesn't amount to much.

Hey Fox News, say it loud and say it proud: we're not CNN and we admit it.

Sincerely,
Jj - Toronto, ON

Canada has been doing the work of that a third of the NATO alliance should have been doing in Afghanistan. Canada's military needs to repair damaged vehicles and equipment and pause overseas deployments for a short period to allow more soldiers to become available for operations.

America doesn't have the troops to do all the jobs they are asked to do either. The difference is that our defense department occasionally tells the truth about it.

Cable companies should give Fox News's slot to Al-Jazeera, so that Canadian viewers can get a better quality, more objective outlet of news.

Let it be noted. During WWII, the Canadians, the Finnish, and the Australians were considered to be the best fighters in the war. Not the Americans.
This guy needs to pay a little more attention to history and the facts before he opens his mouth with such comments.
Our military has been devasted because of the Trudeau years (a pacifist in WWII who did not fight) This is the fault of our governments depleting the funding causing equipment and personnel shortages from our military and certainly has no bearing on the ability of our soldiers. Also take note that when WWII started Canada's military was small but when needed was built up quickly and fought bravely. We fought well before the Americans in WWII. They only entered when Pearl Harbour was bombed by the Japanese while some of their generals were out golfing I might add. This man is ignorant and needs to be educated better. The men and women in our military are to be respected and not treated the way this man has treated them. I am the child of a soldier who fought in WWII. for our freedoms. I am not only proud but grateful for the accomplishments of our soldiers and resent strongly anyone who puts them down in any way shape or form.
It only demonstrates the type of character this man has and it is far beneath the characters of our military personnel.

How can anyone accept such ludicrus and uninformed comments by Greg Gutfield and his flackies. The Canadian Military sends our sons and daughters over to Afghanistan to do a dangerous job. 116 soldiers have died. Does the size of our military diminsh the sacrifice made by these brave men and women? As I write this I am listening to the report about four our soldiers returning home to CFB Trenton - in a box! Comparably speaking, Canada's population is about the same as New York City, approx. 35 million people. So apples to apples our contribution is not insignificant. Why don't you go and stand along the Highway of Heroes and see if the four bodies of Canadian soldiers are a joke. This is despicable. Are your ratings that bad that you try and stir up controversy on the backs of people not only fighting for our county but yours as well. This is very sad. Our soldiers are fighting in the real war against terror, where the Americans should have been. Not their imaginary war in Iraq. The appreciation that we as Canadians have received for the deaths of our soldiers is appalling. No wonder the world is sick of the Americans attitude to the other countries in this world.

This "little army" is on the front lines with 1/16 th of the resourses of the U.S military and consistently engages the ENEMY instead of firing on fellow troups and allies. They fight effectively, bravely, and with honour. This is not a competition too see who carries the most casualties.
We were the first to respond on 911 and continue to support our U.S brothers and sisters regardless of the cost and dispite the imature bablings of small minded men such as this. You have to understand that the vast majority of U.S people are gratefull and understand that we are bravely standing beside them and will continue to do so in the future. These guys MUST rant on like this because it is the only way they can keep thier jobs and at least appear usefull and relavent.
The best way to deal with bully is to pretend he does not matter..and lets face it.
this guy does not matter at all.....absolute nothing..from nothing..rant on ...he will wash away and never be remembered and yes those who fought and count will live on forever..

To all those commenting that we should ignore this Fox-stationed idiot's dribble:

If only we could simply ignore the guy and his ilk, then we would. The issue at hand isn't necessarily that he is profoundly ill-informed about Canada and it's armed forces.

No, the greater and more problematic issue is that this guy is a media personality that is spewing ignorance to the masses. Time is irrelevant: be it 3 AM or 9 PM, this guy is on national television sharing his ignorance with everyone that watches. And when mass media spreads misinformation, no good can come out of it.

But why bother, right? Just one person - what possibly can happen with one guy mouthing off on television? Well, one person may not seem much, but what happens when that one ignorant person turns into many ignorant persons? Like the snowflake that turns a few snowflakes into an avalanche, it becomes a problem.

e-Mail to Gutman...

Years ago I attended university in the U.S. I am PRO US! I am not pro you.

You were likely unaware that your comments emerged the same week as 8 Canadian soldiers gave their lives to bring peace to hurting people. These people were actually doing something meaningful and life changing, not merely quipping about whatever popped into their caffeinated minds.

I have numerous American friends, most of whom are enlightened and caring people. The simmering hatred towards America in many parts of the world today is in many ways - not completely - the product of behavior and ignorance the likes of you. The reason Canadian soldiers are in Afghanistan in the first place is to confront hatred; much of which has been birthed and fed by the brash, overbearing, grossly uninformed handful of Americans like you. How ironic that the Canadian military men and women you belittle are fighting against something to which you contribute - even now. Do you have any idea how distasteful your behavior is to decent people everywhere? You probably won't see the connection even when it's pointed out. Isn't the greatest ignorance to not even know one if ignorant?

It might be time to grow up or shut up. Either option would put an end to this kind of drivel.

By the way, I am still Pro American and anti-ignorance. In light of your new President I suspect that puts me on the 'right' side of his administration - with you 'left' out somewhere around 3:00 AM. Hmmm - how irksome for you!

We should - 1. Salute, respect and support our military and remember their sacrifices. 2. Apperciate our Canadian media for, whatever faults it may have, it never has and hopefully never will sink to the level of Fox News. 3. See Canada's beauty this summer holiday season.

We should NOT - 1. Send e-mails, make phone calls or any form of protest whatsoever to Fox News. Why? Because it will only encourage them to do more of the same. All that is aimed at by those who have made these comments is to stir up controversy and generate ratings and profits. Among the garbage peddlers that are US network TV, Fox is among the worst and unfortunately one of the most profitable because of shows like Redeye and personalities like Gutfeld. I personally don’t agree with our soldiers still fighting a fight that obviously has no award winning out come. The afgan people do not wish to have help and therefore, I feel we are wasting lives from any Country that has pulled together to try to help the citizens of Afghanistan. That being said OUR men are there to help saves lives not to be insulted by our own Canadian citizens broadcasting on TV.

The comments made by Fox news are rude and biased.

However, it is our own fault. As Canadian citizens we allowed the former governments to slash the military in half. We did not want military spending. We seen it as a waste of our money.

Canada hs 65,000 reg force troops and 24,000 reserve forces. Our reserve forces volunteer and cannot be forced to go into theatre. There are 6 million Canadians age appropriate that could be in the military.

The USA has 1.4 million regular force and 1.4 million reservists. with another 59 million age appropriate to join the military.

The Canadian Defence budget is 19.5 billion. The USA budget 583 billion.

The Canadian military allows members to serve until 60, the USA until 49.

The fault lies within the Canadian public. Scream and holler at your MP, tell them to get our military some new equipment.

Tell the government to reopen the bases they closed so that there is room for more military personnel.

Hell turn the GM plant that is going to close into a plant to build new vehicles, tanks, heavy trucks. Open the Windsor textile plant to make new uniforms. Open another to make boots and shoes. Have Bombardier build us planes and helicopters. The list goes on and on.

It is not just the men and women who need a break it is our economy.

Being at war costs a lot of money and we are a small nation in number compaired to the USA. We cannot afford to sustain the cost of the Afghan mission and still replenish the equipment required by the military.

Ignorance is no excuse but remember these are the same people who think we live in igloos and eat seal meat for dinner.

From the time we have been in Afghanistan till now we only lost 116 soldiers, that is a testimony in itself considering the Taliban pop out of holes, lay IED's because they can't fight, and blow themselves up next to civilans.

As a Canadian citizen married to an American man, and currently living in Connecticut, I find the comments by these "panelists" particularly appalling. 116 Canadian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan, and these creeps are taking pot shots at America's ally, the Canadian Military?!?! Their views are the type of egocentricity that gets wonderful, kind, friendly, peace loving, and hard working US citizens - my friends- stigmatized as Ugly Americans. Not fair!!!

what is there to say? Their own president acknowledges that there is a lot of anti-american sentiment out there. Hmmm - with ignorant comments like this about their closest neighbour during a time when the whole world is suffering as a result of their greed and arrogance it's not hard to see why. Canada had the guts to go into Afghanistan when the Americans were more concerned about oil in Iraq. Canada is mourning the loss of 4 more soldiers, and he chose to make jokes about yoga and running on the beach. God Bless America.

Who cares what one american says. Anyone with any sense will brush this off as one person that is ill informed about Canada's contribution to Afghanistan. We need to work closely with our American friends and the other NATO allies to persevere in Afghanistan, not blast the whole nation because of one knuckle head.

SILLY DRAMATIC OUTRAGE

"During the episode that aired on Mar. 17, Gutfeld mocked Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie, chief of land staff, who suggested in early March that the military may need a year-long break in operations due to personnel and equipment shortages."
___________________________

The army of a major (and key) Western nation, employed in an important foreign mission, needs to take a YEAR off?!

That is, indeed, ridiculous.

Fox News hasn't insulted our military, our federal government and unsupportive liberal/socialist politicians in Ottawa have!

We should be embarrassed and ashamed that we've permitted our Canadian military machine to be neglected to the point that we have to pull out of a mission.

Our brave and sacrificing men and women in uniform deserve so much better. Being forced to take a step backwards, after such hard-fought progress (which includes many lost lives), is insulting.

END NOTE: The dramatic effect of mentioning our recently-killed in the article, CTV, doesn't deflect the underlying truth here.

The entire team at Fox news channel is a bunch of ignorant Ostriches. They hide their heads in the sand when the truth confronts them.
They are pro war and pro Bush & his policies.
I only watch Fox news when there's any breaking news regarding any emergencies or criminal activity and for Fox news extra.
Other than that the remaining programs are mainly "pro republican" and " pro Bush" propaganda and seems much like a comedy show

Maybe we should take this with a grain of salt being a 3 a.m. show who is actually watching this stuff, but these comments are truly disappointing. I guess my only comment in defense would be that the military should not be talking about taking breaks because its really not something that should be in their vocabular.

Very offensive and disgusting comments! Even though it's supposed to be comedy, I can't see how anyone in their right mind would find this remotely funny. These clowns should be fired! Fox owes Canada an apology! Especially to the families of our fallen soldiers!

It is attitudes like those shown by Fox news that have tarnished America's reputaion in the world. These people are arrogant know-it-alls. Sadly, they have their followers, but I hope the majority of Americans, like Pesident Obama recognize that they are not the center of the universe, and that only by cooperating with neighbours will we overcome the challenges facing the world as a whole. At least I'm hopeful.

The comments on red eye are not only insulting but the people making those comments are really uninformed and offensive. It is bad taste in humour. Canadian soldiers do not wear little red jackets etc. Our young people are dying and you are poking fun without knowing what you are talking about! So unless you are informed and know who Canada is or even where it is don't comment on something you know nothing at all. I am not going to comment further on this ignorance!

Well the fact that this guy's show is on at 3:00 a.m. when most people are sleeping shows how popular he is. The comments are repugnant, but now we're making it front page news, giving him all kinds of publicity, which I don't agree with. I do think our politicians should be demanding an apology from this clown and Fox News. It's a real slap in the face to those that have lost family members in this conflict; one of which is in my home town.

Imagine the tables are turned. A Canadian broadcaster makes fun of all the 'merican dead in Iraq or 9/11. They'd invade us and call us traitors.
I know that not all Americans are like this, but, it's this kind of ignorant yahoo that makes me dislike the U.S. as a whole. And makes me empathize a bit with the people who call the U.S. enemy.

Canadians mocked !

I find these comments non offensive because they come from a person of low calibre.

We all know that comments like this are many and come from Canadians & Americans alike.

All it takes is no thought or thinking of what one says by engaging their tongue before their brain.

Canadians had lots to say in a very derogative way at President Bush ~ SO !

This is but another loose canon shooting off and thinks he is funny by his comments.

Fox Network in itself is not the tallest tree in the forest ~ Can we expect anything more from this media outlet ?

Both our Nations have their share of Nut Cases and this is one of the best.

I think Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie's comments were meant for our own government - if another War monger comes knocking on our door looking for another country to help settle his daddys debts, Canada should again do the right thing and say no. If the Americans would like to spend eternity at war, give 'er, but don't try and pull us down with your sinking ship.

A wise person once said about comments like this, "Consider the source".
Indeed wise advice.
These comments were made by obviously ignorant people who are desperate to say and/or do anything that will keep their names in the media. After all, just how highly held is this idiot when his "show" airs at 3 am? Hardly prime time, except for the redneck fringe.

All these dolts do is once again prove that there is a segment of the Americian population who have no concept of what exists outside their own borders. Sadly this also will be their downfall someday.

Yes, entirely inappropriate, and profoundly ignorant. Guess he doesn't know that Canada is one of the very few NATO nations actually doing heavy the lifting, the fighting and the dying. As opposed to the Germans,French and other European nations who stay in the north where it is nice and safe.

But if Canada is not getting credit for its very significant efforts in Afghanistan, whose fault is it really? Probably Canada's - it needs more of a PR push in the US on its efforts. US news outlets will naturally pursue stories like MP's jumping on effigies of the US President (remember Carolyn Parish)? or anti-US demonstrations in Toronto.

If it were up to Fox news type values, there would be no end to our combat mission in Afghanistan and we'd also have been in Iraq in 2003.

By the appearance of the quotes in the article above, it would appear that what these Fox pundits want is for Canadians to be insulted and feel belittled for being known as a nation that values peace.

In a roundabout way I think we should be thanking Fox for spreading that rumour on such a massive scale - our own governments and war supporting citizens certainly haven't been doing a very good job of it in the last few years.

If we actually must rise to the bait and take a formidable swipe back, then why don't we really annoy the hell out of these right wing bozos and leave Afghanistan right now?

No wonder this show is on at 3 a.m. They probably didn't think anyone would notice this segment.

I have seen plenty of satire on US TV, at our expense, and most of it has been funny and tasteful. But the timing of this just wasn't good. I saw this before the media finally picked up on this segment. It was hard to watch.

Even for this Conservative, I don't like watching Fox News. But I doubt all the noise we make up here will just fall on deaf ears at that network.

I have watched this clip, and I am outraged, physically ill even. The ignorance of this Gutfeld and his panel is astonishing. I have fired off my email, and I urge others to do the same, let this insensitive, ignorant fool know how offensive he is. redeye@foxnews.com is the address. What you have to understand is that all the U.S. networks play to the U.S. audience. What is said down there is for their ratings benifit, and has nothing to do with Canada.

Fox is the only so called conservative minded network in the U.S.

I'd like to see our news networks do some fact finding of their own, instead of parroting what ever any of the U.S. networks say, and taking it as fact.

You won't find much truth on any of the U.S. news networks. They are so partisan for one side or the other, even the Americans have stopped watching them in droves.

Lighten up and just consider how luck you are not to have U.S. style news in Canada.

I wonder if the Americans have noticed a trend that the two wars that Canada did not stand beside the US were Vietnam war and the invasion of Iraq.

Considering the relative size of our military, they should see that we are more than pulling our own weight in Afghanistan.

As far as "taking a break" is concerned, this is absolutely necessary if we want to continue to contribute on a long-term basis. Besides, all parties in the federal government have committed to a withdrawal in 2011, so a "break" is the best we can do right now.
