CTV Winnipeg: Manitoba did see a decline in thefts
Despite a double digit drop in auto theft, Manitoba continues to lead the nation when it comes to number of cars stolen. It's a dubious record that province, police and public insurance company are working to correct.

WINNIPEG — Manitoba continues to be the car-theft capital of Canada.

The overall national rate of reported vehicle thefts dropped nine per cent in 2007. But vehicle thefts remained one of the most frequently reported crimes in Canada.

Manitoba saw a 10 per cent decline in the number of stolen cars in 2007 but the province still has the highest rate of stolen vehicles followed by Alberta.

Cities in western Canada also led the country in vehicle thefts with Winnipeg leading the pack, followed by Abbotsford, Edmonton and Regina.

Cars that were recovered by police were generally used for "joy-riding" or as transportation in other crimes.
