In a surprise decision, John McCain has named 44-year-old Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate.
McCain made the announcement in Dayton, Ohio on Friday, calling it a hard-working city that deserved a vice president who would "stand on your side and not in your way."
He said he has spent months searching for the right candidate and described Palin as "someone with strong principals, a fighting spirit and deep compassion."
He said the little known governor and mother of five -- whom many media organizations are scrambling to learn about -- grew up in a working-class family, was a member of a union and is married to a union member and "understands the problems and hopes of working people."
"She knows where she comes from and she knows who she works for. She stands up for what's right and she doesn't let anyone tell her when to sit down," McCain said to thousands of cheering supporters.
"She's exactly who I need, she's exactly who this country needs to help me fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second. My friends and fellow Americans I am very pleased and very priviledged to introduce to you the next vice president of the United States, Gov. Sarah Palin of the great state of Alaska."
Palin, a self-described former "hockey mom" introduced her husband Todd, a commercial fisherman, and four of her five children, including her youngest, a three-month-old. Her eldest son, who recently enlisted in the U.S. military and will be deployed to Iraq on Sept. 11, was not at the announcement.
She said she knew she had been chosen from a short list of qualified contenders.
"To have been chosen brings a great challenge. I know it will demand the best that I have to give and I promise nothing less," Palin said.
The governor who has made her name in Alaska by fighting corruption and standing up to powerful oil interests vowed to continue to stand up for what she believes in.
"It's always safest in politics to avoid risk, to sort of go along, status quo. But I didn't get into politics to do the safe things. A ship in harbour is safe, but that's not what it was built for," Palin said to raucous applause.
The former city councillor who went on to become mayor of her hometown in Alaska, was a dark horse contender for the job. She appears to have been chosen in a bid to help the McCain camp bring disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters into the Republican fold.
Palin was selected over other front-runner candidates for vice president, including Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and Democrat-turned-independent Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman.
McCain is expected to appear with Palin at two or more rallies in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Missouri ahead of the Republican National Convention which begins Monday in St. Paul, Minn.
McCain's announcement of his running mate came on his 72nd birthday, and one day after his Democratic opponent Barack Obama brought 84,000 people to their feet with his powerful message of change.
Obama
After hearing of McCain's choice of running mate, Democratic nominee Barack Obama congratulated Palin.
He told reporters in Pennsylvania while he hasn't met her, Palin seems like "a compelling person" with a "terrific" personal story.
His comments followed remarks from his own campaign criticizing the Alaska governor. An Obama spokesman called Palin the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience.
The campaign later issued a release that softened their response, calling the choice of Palin "another encouraging sign that old barriers are falling in our politics," and an "admirable person."
McCain's announcement came the day after Obama accepted his party's nomination and stole headlines away from the Democratic campaign.

I think he was pushed to take matters into his own hands. I have a teenage son and if he was involved with a drug dealer I would be furious and try anything to save him like this father did for his daughter. Why do police often say they can't do anything until it's too late? Whether it be a drug dealer or an abusive spouse, the police can't seem to do anything until something really bad happens. In this case they could have raided the drug dealers home and arrested him. The whole town knew what was going on in that house but yet the police chose to do nothing. Release this man and give him a medal for doing the right thing by his daughter. I can't wait to see the episode on W5, I will certainly be watching this one.

Politicians do indeed have an effect on the more dramatic policies, like gun control, abortion and others big tickets that attract attention in the media. Extra, Extra, read all about it ……!
But can they change anything that is of importance for you and me ????
While the babble about cutting taxes, have some of you realize that banks are making record profits, month after months, and the big oil companies are not doing so bad either ?
Boy, I bet those in charge of those big interests must be pissing in their pants talking about how gullible we really are...
Because of our stupidity and laziness, we fully deserve what is happening to all of us....
We want entertainment, not content.... They are more than happy to deliver us clowns that will make us react, as long as we do not ask the real questions....
Big TV, 900 channels, two cars, multiple credit cards that produce huge monthly minimum payments, which represents almost only interests and minimal debt repayments…..
But, let’s not forget, we are entertained !!!!!!
Our kids will be really proud of us…..

To Robin the Hood, the world is unstable, it will require a tough hand to guide through the next decade, whether Dem/Lib or Rep/ conserv. Your comment about the right and the KKK, well let's hear it for those toereant lefties, Stalin, Mao etc. Extremism knows no bounds and come from all parts of society. Leftists can be as offensive and extreme as rightists. The political spectrum is not linear but a circle, and you far enough in either direction and end up at the bottom.
Your kind of attitude is what creates distorted discussions because they you make the assumption that the left is right and the right is wrong, by definition, as you say. That is intolerant, and it is not by ideology that left is more toerant, and I don't know where you would come up with that and shows you really don't know the different ideologies and the reality that all parties distort the idoelogy to get elected.

Honestly, I think McCain will start WWIII if he wins!.. hence, he must not win. The right have been brain washed I'm afraid (or their brains washed away).
Concerning "Andy" the American .. the fact that you will vote is scary indeed and is what's wrong with US democracy I dare say. The only good vote is one that belongs to the well-informed, educated voter who can see their political smokescreens and lies for which Bush and Co. is an expert at. Obama's only fault is that he is too honest and generous an individual which, in US politics, usually is suicide.

The first commenters came out in droves to bash Palin and McCain.
McCain made history today. The first woman vice president in America. This is true progress for women.
The president is the CEO and the VP is the assistant.
Dems have it backward. The have the assistant trying to be in the driver's seat.
Palin has a good background. Came into politics clean and climbed clean. Can't say that for Obama (Rezo, Ayers, and the list is goes on).
Obama completely blew it when he snubbed Hilary because he was afraid she would steal the SHOW from him.

Here is a short list of some notable soldiers that became president. I assume by your comments their presidencies were of no value due to their being used to take orders...
- Theodore Roosevelt
- Dwight Eisenhower
- John F Kennedy
- ronald Reagan
- Jimmy Carter
- Gerald Ford
- Lyndon Johnson
- Harry Truman
- Ulysses Grant
- Abraham Lincoln
- Andrew Jackson
- James Madison
- thomas Jefferson
- George Washinton...
The list goes on and on. Clearly these "yes men" were a bunch of un-influential lapdogs because they didn't start their presidential bids with as long a list of celebrities as Senator Obama - right?
The "non-partisanship" of the comments I see here makes me feel ill.

McCain was polling more 10 points behind Obama a couple of months ago but has now they are evens at 43% and in some national polls he has inched forward of Obama. Adding this softer, younger side could be all he needs.
This promises to be an interesting election.

Americans should be concerned that a relatively inexperienced politician (only 2 years as Alaska governor)could find herself in the White House as the most powerful person in the world. There were far more superior choices (Tom Ridge, Mitt Romney) and whether you like them or not, they are experienced.
The VP role is not some ceremonial job like the GG in Canada; you are second in line to the presidency. If the president dies in office, the VP takes over for the remainder of the term as president.

Obama refused John's invitation to a set of 20 townhall meetings prior to the conventions. The reason CNN relayed is that John is very good at these types of meetings ... debates. It is John's ever pressing townhall agenda that has to be paying off in Republican's surge in the polls, from double digit behind to dead even at convention time.
Whatever bounce Obama was looking for after his rock concert last night will be offset by Sarah Palin's addition to the ticket. In fact after the Republican convention, it will be interesting to see what the polls will say.

This choice will really annoy the frumpy Oprah worshippers, but they wouldn't vote for McCain anyway, LOL.

Ontario the liberal province is about to be a have not province while Alberta and Saskatchewan the conservative provinces (based on their provincial governments and how they vote for MPs) are leading the country in economic growth.
In the US, the conservative south still has the best economy in the US while liberal California and the north east have the weakest.
The examples are clear, with Harper and McCain our economy nationally will mirror the Canadian west and the US south respectively. With Dion and Obama we'd start to look like Ontario and Massachusettes respectively.
Liberals don't do well with the economy because their ideas have been discredited by every major economist to date. In fact I can't recall a socialist economist out there left alone a left-wing economist who's won a Nobel Laureate in economics. Neither Keynes nor Gailbraith did, and they advised governments (badly of course). The first lefty economist whose ideas are adopted by an economy which does well will become a multi-millionaire due to speaking engagements, book deals and government contracts! You know what? I aint seen him or her yet!
The right is right, the left is wrong!

(Americans) "vote with the realities of the world around them," do they? Like the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? Or do you still believe, along with many Republicans, that those weapons will be found somewhere, somehow?
Who's really more in touch with reality, do you think? Conservatives in the States are more likely, by a wide margin, to discredit global warming, to reject the Holocaust, and to believe in creationism. Like our Conservatives here, who dismiss the science of the Insite facility, Republicans live in a make-believe world modeled on the past, not the future.
We are quickly running out of time to allow people stuck in the Conservative/Republican unreality to lead us anymore. They had their chance, and they blew it big time. The American economy is in desperate trouble (27 trillion dollars in debt), they are mired in a war they should never have fought, global warming is picking up speed, and their infrastructure is crumbling.
And they have the absolute nerve to say they have the experience to lead because they live in the "real world".
Oh please.

Any way you slice this presidential campaing, its going to boil down to TWO factors for each campaign :
1) For the Democrats, all of those lower and middle class families who want change, want universal health care, job security, etc.... for the first time in a long time, those people and their families are going to the booths to vote, instead of sitting by the sidelines for another democratic hopeful to come along.... they know this is it and they will have to help win the democratic states, but.....
2) In saying that, seeing as the presidential voting is NOT based on the majority vote but instead a number of votes represented by each state, the Republican states that have kept the Republicans in office for the last 8 years are going to have to be largely overturned by Democratic voters in order to sway the vote to Obama's favour.
Despite all of the arguments and comments being posted on here, in November, those will be the two deciding factors.
And I wouldnt be surprised if the citizens of America who have had the LEAST amount of voice over the last 8 years, will finally be allowed to have their say and make that very change for the United States of America.

People who support Obama just because he's younger and he's a more inspirational speaker definitely need to wake up. Commander-in-chief of the United States is a job that requires better qualifications than Obama has.
And besides, electing a pro-choice president like Obama would be another descent into an increasingly immoral society.

I live in the U.S. now and have my citizenship and will vote McCain 100%. This is not a continuation of the Bush/Cheney policies. This is the choice that should have been made by Republicans 8 years ago. His choice of Gov. Palin is solid and will make a significant difference not only with the base of the party but the pro-life coalitions and women.
Obama may have the media glitz, but that won't wash with the Midwest as folks start to really look at the issues that will define the future. That's why the "feel-good" crowd in states on both coasts usually vote Democrat while the common-sense folks in the Midwest and South vote Republican.
All I hear is how Obama is what the world needs because he is soooo inspiring. He will change the world with the hope of prosperity so that all can live together in peace and harmony and will single-handedly convince all the bullies and dictators with his eloquence and yada, yada, yada....
When it comes down to it, all this rhetoric is hogwash when facing the realities of this world.
Wake up from your dream people.

On the topic of this article I think it's a brilliant move on the part of the Republicans. Here's only one reason why.
This takes all the posturing out of the dem's arguments that they are the only party of inclusion as I heard on the radio this morning Palin is a mother of 5 with 1 downs syndrome child. Let's see the Dems take a run at her now since they make it standard practice to attack anyone who is not a Liberal protected class. How will they handle a conservative female govenor who supports drilling in her own back yard.
The Republicans took a huge step to locking up 18 million votes today.

Robin in the Hood ... I dunno where to start with you. Where do you think the army gets its leaders? From the civilian world? You think civilians are trained to lead socliers in combat? There are night school classes for that??? No they're trained soldiers!
Just what do you think the army trains soldiers to do? Lead of course. If soldiers are in combat and their company or platoon officers and sergants die, you don't think that a soldier will pick up after them and lead the rest of the company or platoon? Soldiers have to lead or they and their comrads die!
The best leaders in any society are its soldiers because they unlike other leaders must lead by example or the troops don't follow and the chain of command breaks down and the mission fails.
No Robin you don't recall!

As for this notion that Obama can "undo" everything that Bush did, reality check, people: the President can do precious little without the expressed support of both houses of congress and the Supreme Court. Bush did not send troops to Iraq; CONGRESS did. And unless congress agrees with Obama (assuming he wins; not the slam dunk you might think), they're not leaving.
Bush is one man; so is Obama. Neither is perfect, neither has all the answers. But this whole "left is good, right is evil" stuff has to stop; it's insulting, it's infuriating and, most of all, it's not true. How come, when it comes to Bush, nobody talks about all the additional money being sent to Africa to fight HIV? How come no one talks of "No Child Left Behind", designed to improve the educational opportunities for minorities? Or that, since 9/11, the number of major attacks against US citizens or interests, at home or abroad, is exactly ZERO? Because that would not support the notion that "left is good, right is evil".
Same arguement applies for Canada; but that's a post for another day...

Remember that all but two (2) sitting democrats voted for war with Iraqi as well. Clinton sat around will Bin Laden declared war on the west in that famous news cast, and blew up the Cole, and other items. He sent some cruise missle to blow up an diserted terrorist training camp. Claiming Obama is going to cream McCain shows you have zero understanding of Americans and their political thought process. If that was true, Obama would be leading McCain in the polls by 20%, not trailing by 2%.
There was no Obama bounce after he selected his VP. There will be little after the convention.
McCain has made a Rovian move by selecting Palin as his running mate. He is clearly going after the dis-affected Hillary supporters who said they will vote McCain rather than Obama. Something like 25% of her supporters.

What could you possibly mean by that? Concentration camps? A "Final Solution" to the liberal problem? I am often truly shocked and deeply frightened by some of the comments that appear on these and other boards, as they are so often the product of the most appalling prejudices.
It is so obvious tha the bulk of neo-con thinking does not reflect the ideals held by most Canadians, given that only 30% of the electorate voted for the CPC last time around.
You want less government and lower taxes? Ask the people of Walkerton, Ontario what they think of less regulation and "letting the market decide".

I am no fan of either candidate because both represent American wants, which is the farthest think away from Canadian needs.
I made a bet with a friend back in May that McCain would win the election.
He and everyone laughed at me then. Now they aren't laughing anymore.
The reason is Americans are far too racist and small minded as a large population to elect anyone that isn't the color skin of the religious right wing, which is just over 50%.
These are the same group of blind fools that reelected Bush to a second term, when it was clear that the administration should have been facing war crimes.
Secondly, this move to name this Alaskan to VP impresses no one.
It clearly shows that McCain wants to take advantage of the Democrats inability to see Hillary as a VP, so McCain will play on this during the pre-election time...watch you'll see the ads making reference to the Republicans as being, 'more forward thinking, progressive etc etc'.

Let there be light!

The majority of votes in the US senate are unanimous. McCain actually frequently split on Republican bills and is noted for an “independent streak.” You are attempting to mislead people. Truth is not on your side. I have called you on it.
I encourage people to please do your own research before accepting these sorts of notions. Look for truth. As usual, there is a great deal of deception from the left.

Again you know not of what you speak and paint a distorted version of the facts to argue a point. And insult the intelligence of the US electorate in the process as if Canadians are somehow smarter at the ballot box. How do you explain 13 years of Liberal political stagnation, arrogance and corruption?
As far as soldiers not making good leaders, here are a few.
Winston Churchill: Royal Navy
Theodore Roosevelt: US Marines
Charles DeGaulle: French Army
John F Kennedy: US Navy
Dwight Eisenhower: US Army
Julius Caesar : Roman Legion
To name a few.
George Bush is the cause of ALL OF THE POLITICAL INSTABILITY IN THE WORLD ???????????
Lets see. Did he form El Qaida? No that was a creation of the Pakistani Intelligence service to foment problems for the Indians in the Kashmir region and was coopted by Osama and his crew.
Did he form and direct policy for Hamas ? Nope. Again a bunch of psychos that represent an ideological bent that would like to see Israel destroyed.
Did he install Ahmajdinajad (sp) into power in Iran, or Kim Jong Il into power in North Korea? Nope.
As far as the NAFTA "leak" as you call it. The Privy Council Office investigation determined that the Prime Minister was unaware of the source of the release of information. And in any event, it matters not. A US party nomination campaign does not run the Parliament or the government of Canada.
By its very ideology the left is FAR MORE INTOLERANT of dissent than the right. All you need to do is write, post or express a contrarian opinion at a gathering of "liberals" and listen to the shrill shriek of attacks begin. There is generally no room for debate, compromise or the open minded receipt of a differing opinion.
Sic. Mr Dions assertion that he "will not change one comma" of his Green Shaft.... I mean Green Shift, tax grab.... I mean environmental brainstorm. He's right, everyone else is wrong.
For all Obamas eloquent words about Change. He hasn't said word one about how he is going to do it.

Republican John McCain has just announced that he has chosen Sarah Palin, current governor of Alaska, as his potential Vice President.
This means that when - sorry - if something happens to McCain then the United States would have a woman as President.
Michelle Obama might as well order some furniture for the White House.

I really hope our American friends get the government that they need to dig themselves out of the hole that the Bush administration has left them in. McCain claims he isn't a BUSHMAN, but just listen to him. I mean listen to him when he can remember where he is and what year it is. Normally i don't strut around hailing victories before they happen. But Barrack makes me think of trying just a little more at being caring of others. He motivates.
From the comments we made about our pending election, i think, that i can safely say. We do not have a speaker in Canadian politics that can motivate people at the local pub let alone 75,000. How i wish that i could once again vote for a person that fills me with a sense of hope. Well anyway its a new century maybe God can bless us with a leader who cares about the people. Not the rich people & big business.

A Canadian conservative is the equivalent to an American Democrat. I mean just look at universal health care, most american democrats dont believe in it. I am a canadian conservative, but sometimes I feel more liberal than those democrats.

I'm amazed how 100% wrong you are... on each and every point except the very first! Wow I'm impressed! Americans are as much and apparently more influenced by sentiment when they vote... otherwise Bush would have never won the second election. Not withstanding the instability caused by twisted right wing policies in the Mid East the far right wants voters to believe the World is unstable so they can use the fear card to get back in power. The have no other ideological means. Yes, Bush is the cause of much if not most of the political instability in the World.
Most Bush bashers are not US bashers but then again, the extreme right have the tendency to label people anyway. McCain will NOT be President and Harper will NOT be PM (for much longer) if Americans and Canadians have any kind of intelligence and wisdom.
Harper did support McCain by leaking the NAFTA affair and he most likely would show his extremist side if he had the majority he dearly wants. By its very ideology the left is far more tolerant of others than the right... try to tell me that the KKK is left leaning! :) "Bunch of self serving pigs at the trough"?.. surely, you must be talking about "the enrich the rich the rich at the expense of everyone else" right wing here??! If so you are correct so I'll assume there was a typo. "If you don't agree with us, you are an intolerant extremist"... ah sounds like KKK talk again. Yeehaw!

McCain will be President and Harper will be PM. I find it very hypocritical that the Libs and NDP go down to the US and support the Dems, but if Harper were to ever support McCain publicly he would be an extremist. Just shows exactly how "tolerant" the left is. Bunch of self serving pigs at the trough. If you don't agree with us, you are an intolerant extremist. Junk! It is all about optics. The Demorats in the US are still more "right leaning" than Harper is in Canada. Look at policies. If the Dems were as socialistic as the Libs here they would never hold office in the US again.
