TORONTO Fifteen companies responsible for 90 per cent of advertising aimed at children are promising to make the ads more health focused.
The companies, including McDonald's and Coca-Cola, say half their advertising directed at kids will now promote active living and healthy products.
There is no punishment for companies that fail to live up to their commitment but they will be audited by Advertising Standards Canada.
Nancy Croitoru, with Food and Consumer Products of Canada, says the pledge is at least a sign the companies take their responsibility to battle child obesity seriously.
Health Minister Tony Clement says child obesity is a complex problem that leads to illness later in life.
He says he's pleased the industry is working with government to encourage kids to lead healthier lives.
