If you're looking for some ideas on what you want to put under the tree for kids with active imaginations, Jeff Hurst from the Canadian Toy Association suggests fantasy-play toys and remote-controlled vehicles.

For young children, Hurst offers the Pirate Ship from Mega Bloks. The toy is composed of two pirates, a monkey, a parrot and a mermaid. It also comes with 12 blocks including palm trees, which allow kids to build their own treasure island.

"It's very much as pre-school toy. It's got sounds. The great thing about it is you can take this, combine it with your other Mega Bloks sets and make a great fantasy time," Hurst told Canada AM.

Transformer toys, which have been in the market for decades, are still proving to be a popular draw.

Transformers Energon Omega Supreme Figure from Hasbro Canada Corporation, stands at 16 inches in robot mode and can be broken down into two vehicles -- a construction crane and a space battleship -- that combine to make a super robot or train.

"They're able to take different toys, combine them into one giant toy. They see it on TV. You can shoot the rockets off. There are certain sounds as well. You can then disassemble it and have some smaller toys," Hurst said.

Another type of gift parents may want to consider are battery-operated remote control toys.

The Air Hogs RC SkyWinder performs aerial ballet as it loops and sidewinds through the sky, reaching heights of 100 feet. Also included is a display stand that can be used for pilot training.

"It's one of those toys you take out in the park and you have got the whole sky at your control," Hurst said.

For kids who like to take their toys outdoors, Hurst suggests Tyco's Radio Control Terrain Twister, which rolls over most types of surfaces including grass, sand, pavement, water and snow.

And for the prankster in the family, the Stink Blasters Blaster may just be the perfect gift.

The blaster shoots a ball of smelly air from up to 20 feet away and comes with two Stink Pods that have a variety of odours such as rotten eggs.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
