Consumer Reporter Pat Foran enlists the help of the Frugal Shopper's 'coupon lady' and share his tips on how to save money and slash your grocery bill.

According to Foran, grocery shopping is one area in which consumers can save a lot of money.

"If you do the math and think you can save $20 a week, that's a thousand dollars a year," he told Canada AM.

However, Foran says coupon clipping is a lost art and takes a fair amount of time. That means, saving $40 on a grocery bill could require using up to 27 coupons.

"If you're trying to save money, maybe you're a stay-at-home mom, a student, retired, or you want a new hobby to save you money -- clip coupons."

Coupons can often be found in the mail, newspapers, magazines and at the back of some receipts.

According to Foran, only one per cent out of the $2.6-billion worth of coupons in Canada are redeemed.

"A lot of the time, you can call these companies up or email them saying, 'I'd like to use your product, can I have a coupon.' They'll send it to you," he said.

Here are some of Foran's tips to stretch your grocery bill:

  • Make a list and stick to it
  • Buy in bulk and freeze things
  • Dump the junk -- it's good for your waistline and pocketbook

I think he was pushed to take matters into his own hands. I have a teenage son and if he was involved with a drug dealer I would be furious and try anything to save him like this father did for his daughter. Why do police often say they can't do anything until it's too late? Whether it be a drug dealer or an abusive spouse, the police can't seem to do anything until something really bad happens. In this case they could have raided the drug dealers home and arrested him. The whole town knew what was going on in that house but yet the police chose to do nothing. Release this man and give him a medal for doing the right thing by his daughter. I can't wait to see the episode on W5, I will certainly be watching this one.
