Canadian police hand over child molester to U.S. authorities

VANCOUVER — A convicted child molester who was living undetected for years in Vancouver has been handed over to American authorities.
Steven Dyer, who was convicted a decade ago and faces 169 years behind bars in the U.S. for 13 counts, was captured Tuesday night in Montreal and taken into custody in New York the next day.
Deputy U.S. Marshall Frank Newsom says the 44-year-old went before a federal magistrate on Thursday and is expected to soon be returned to Arizona, where he was wanted for failing to show up for a court appearance in 2002.
Newsom says there is an ongoing investigation into whether Dyer reoffended while living at two different residences in Vancouver, and that there is also a probe into whether anyone helped him hide from police.
Dyer, who was featured on the TV show "America's Most Wanted," was nabbed as he passed through Montreal's Trudeau airport while returning from Venezuela.
The show described him as a pharmaceutical sales rep in Scottsdale, Ariz., who had a clean criminal history and volunteered with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
