NEW YORK — A Canadian businessman has been convicted of rape in New York City.

Sixty-year-old Mustapha Ouanes is being held without bail, and is due to be sentenced on March 15th.

Ouanes, who was born in Algeria, faces up to 25 years in prison.

The incident happened in January, 2010, when prosecutors say he raped a 26-year-old woman in the room of a upscale New York hotel.

At the time, Ouanes was travelling in the entourage of a Saudi prince, whose identity was not mentioned in court.

Prosecutors say Ouanes sexually assaulted what they call a "vulnerable intoxicated woman in his hotel room" after meeting her and a friend in a bar.

Ouanes says he did nothing wrong.

He claims the woman initiated sexual contact with him, adding she and her friend concocted the rape allegation because he would not pay for sex.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
