Two giant panda bears will be coming to Canada for the next 10 years, ending Prime Minister Stephen Harper's trade trip to China this week on a positive note.

Harper's accomplishments this trip appear to trump his last foray into the country in 2009. That trip ended with an icy rift between the Asian economic superpower and Canada, something the prime minister was heavily criticized for at home.

"A couple of years later, he's met a lot of top leaders, made a lot of deals and the symbolic payoff seems to be a couple of pandas," CTV's Roger Smith said in an interview from China Saturday.

Harper and his wife Laureen were introduced to one of the pandas, a five-year-old male named Er Shun, when they visited a zoo in the southwestern city of Chongqing. Laureen was photographed holding a baby panda that squirmed as she walked with it in her arms.

The other panda coming to Canada, a female named Ji Li, is staying at another zoo.

The bears will arrive in the country next year and will stay at the Toronto zoo for five years and the Calgary zoo for the remaining five.

It will cost about $1 million a year to host the bears, but zoo officials expect to recoup that expense because of their overwhelming popularity.

While there's been a lot of talk on trade this trip, the most visible accomplishment is the acquisition of the two pandas, Smith added.

Much of the visit was spent cementing ties with China with the bulk of discussion around energy.

"Canada wants to sell more energy and diversify away from its reliance on the American markets . . . that's been a major theme," Smith told CTV News Channel.

Harper met with many of the country's top leaders and developed personal connections and now he's talking about taking the relationship to an even higher level, Smith said.

"The two countries are studying how to make the relationship even deeper and the Chinese have even mused about a free trade deal," he said.

Harper has suggested any free trade deal is a long way off and that there are a lot of obstacles to overcome before any proposal is on the table.

"It's a long-term goal, it's not something we're going to see anytime soon," Smith said.

The prime minister was also vague on discussions with the Chinese leadership on human rights or their veto of the United Nations Security Council's attempt to call for an end of the bloodshed in Syria.

Pressed on specific human rights subjects, Harper said his policy when visiting other countries is not to say anything potentially embarrassing to his host. He did confirm he raised the issues in private, however.

"Harper said it's a sign of the maturing of the relationship between Canada and China, that he feels he can raise the issues, albeit in private, not in public and it still won't undermine efforts to deepen the economic relationship," Smith said.

I find it very hard to reconcile the fact that a country on the one hand treats one species as if it was made of gold yet on the other hand turns its head as another species (dogs) are barbaristically slaughtered on a daily basis. I've taken a personal stand to avoid purchasing any products made in China.

So proud of our PM. He succeeded in doing something that our liberal PMs could never do, not even with bribes by bringing pandas to Canada.

Gord—FYI a prepared speech (word smith) is just that I’m curious to know how many pointed speeches must we be subjected to in order to realize that it is not us (the common people) these political leaders are addressing well at least not in a good way? There was a time when impassioned leaders spoke to the people without a piece of paper, they had true vision and were ripping at the seams to share that vision. You underestimate the power of you. This reading carefully crafted words written by someone other than the speaker grows old and weary. We need a leader who speaks from the heart who truly cares for the continued progression of all the people as a whole entity who is willing to put the people first before anything else! Our creativity is stifled we are blocked at every turn not unlike rats in a maze. We must all use our voices in our common purpose to eradicate this self-promoting, self-centered, egotistical, care only for myself and those closest to me who will further my own successes of monetary wealth and prestige! What do you think is godlier more in tuned with us; your heart or your business sense? Your heart is a muscle the more you use it the bigger it gets—the bigger it gets the more it holds till it holds everything dear that is important choosing itself to turn away from that which isn’t! Such a world we could build by simply cultivating and using the talents we were born with. We came into this world with a place set at the table for us in preparation of our arrival. This world is doomed if we continue to work against our nature!

Is this a good time to comment on all the hokey excuses the Calgary zoo comes up with when animals in their care die? How many stingrays died in the touch the wild animal fiasco? And didn't they ccrush a Capybara with a door? Oh, what happened to the tiger cub recently, born to a tiger the zoo keepers didn't know was pregnant? I do not see a good outcome from the generous Chinese gesture>

Panda's for free trade and oil. Wow - whose the winner here? Harper is an arrogant buffoon. Who believes for a second that he can travel to China, is offered 2 pandas and change decades of a country that is abusive to it's own people. Free trade with China would NOT be free. China is a corrupt nation and has been known as just that forever. Harper need to stay at home. To Marg N..... your post sounds eerily familiar to those of steve, stu, Sue, Wendy, and all the other Harper haters, now you've added a Marg N, which I don't really think will confuse anyone with me. PM Harper seems to have had a very successful trip to China, and yes, even the fact that China will be lending Pandas to the Toronto and Calgary Zoos is quite a "feather in his cap". Even if the taxpayers were picking up the tab for this to happen ( which, it sounds like we won't be) it will be great for those Zoos and the people who flock to see them.Personally I can't wait to see the Pandas at the Calgary Zoo when we visit there. PM Harper has shown he does very well on the world stage, in spite of the whining and disrespectfulness of the usual Harper haters. that frequent this site. Hopefully this will get posted.

Only a Conservative would cast aside Humans rights and praise Harper for his neglect. I'll give you this much though, your pathetic allegiance to the Harper Monarchy is commendable and has certainly taken on a great degree of smugness since Harper won his majority. To me, he's far from being a Prime Minister, and his supporters continue to clarify how far away they are from being Canadian. Your opinions on my comments have fallen on deaf ears, but thanks for reading them. And to my fan Pye Chartt who focuses on my every word so much, I appreciate the time I command from your no doubt hectic days typing away on that Lite Brite of yours. Good job Mr. PM, you represented your country well during your official visit to China. I hope that progress has been made between our relationship with China and that more business can be done to forge ahead one step at a time as China slowly progresses as a nation. We are all aware of the obstacles that must be overcome, especially with Chinas record on human rights, but going forward more business and trade between our two nations will in some way help China with the progress of it's own human rights issues within theire country.

I have never voted Conservative in my entire voting life.....until the last couple of elections. Why? Because it is clear to me that Stephen Harper has a realistic view on Canada and is concerned with keeping the country viable. He has PROVEN, to me at least, that he is intelligent, capable and makes good decisions in the LONG TERM. NDP would bankrupt us looking after special interest groups and welfare. The Liberals have PROVEN to be shortsighted and irresponsible and have cost us alot more. Not to mention the dishonesty. No matter how hard the Liberals try to discredit Harper, their trackrecord while in power speaks for itself.

All the diplomatic fluff n' puff is nice. Really. China appears happy. Harper appears like he's almost happy. It's all coming up roses. China's happy because it, likely, now has an agreement to buy as much Canadian oil as it needs. This keeps it economy humming. Which is precisely what it has to continue doing. China has a dilemma; it's economy either continues rising at record pace or it risk serious social instability when it stops. The thing is, for their economy to continue on in it's present form, other economies have to be the consumers of their output. And that is now beginning to stop as Western economies all slowly fall back as their stand of living continues to fall. No one should be naive; a big brick wall is in front of China and us.

China thinks were becoming more like them, Canadians can't believe a word that comes from this government. Yesterday Flarethy said middle aged people don't have to worry about their pensions, we won't raise the age till 2020. If we live till were 86 then middle age would be 43, so if they raise the age in 2020 these middle aged people would only be 51 years old in 2020, so either they out right lied to us because they think were stupid or they don't understand grade 8 math. Harper must think, well they voted for me so they must be a little short on the learni.

If I remember right, last visit Harper took a hardline approach with China and it failed plus he was hammered at home for making a mess of the relationship. This time, he took a diplomatic approach and the visit seems to be a huge success but once again, he's being hammered at home. I'm become tired of the mindless politics and endless criticism of some.... the only way criticism holds water is to also give praise when it is due. Why are we so polarized?

@Marg...if you read the story, the bears will cost the zoo's a million a year not the tax payer. That money will be recouped plus more becuse people will pay to go see them. Mr Harper did what was the economically sound thing to do to get the country out of the recession buy pumping stimulus money into the country. Now he is taking the next step in keeping us economicaly strong by taking some of the eggs out of the one basket and spreading them around. If we keep our selves chained to our traditional trading partners then our economy will remain at risk of being dragged down by someone elses fiscal stupidity. Harper will be known as the greatest PM of our time and he is setting the bar for who ever comes next. We need leadership that stops pandering to minority steak holders and lobby groups that traditionally held sway with previous governments. I look forward to the next 3 years and all the good things to come.

Canadian values... it was a great speech and was broadcast in Canada by another station.... I subscribe to receiving all these Prime Ministers news releases which the media if they subscibe (no cost).... I noticed several commentors from the TV stations stating that not much has been said about human rights etc. on this trip... I sugguest they check their in box... our Prime Minister has made it very clear about Canadians stand/views on human rights.... Who is the being lazy and not chasing the story.. it is just a few clicks away.. why are the media making a mystery out of something which is not.... You want the facts..look for them .. they are there.. word for word... will this comment get posted probably not.. the facts just the facts.

Canadian Bob...y ou are probably one of the many complaining about the economy.... something that this PM is trying very hard to repair, but in case you haven't noticed it is a global issue that even this great PM can't repair by himself..... just like the Chinese human rights issues... these have been going on for many decades and are not going to be repaired over night..... sure I don't agree with what China does to their people, but I would like to see the economy fixed first and then work on other issues with China.... don't think for one moment that PM Harper is letting anyone down, he is doing a great job in a very difficult time.....

@Canadian Bob. I'll come to your house and start ranting and raving about the cluelessness and drivel of all your posts. How receptive would you be to that? So what if Harper didn't pound on his podium demanding changes in China. He clearly stated that he did bring it up behind closed doors. I am sorry you weren't on the invite list for it. Harper is doing a great job with the world in the state it is. Our country is among the strongest in the world. But that will never be enough for some. He could do exactly what you whined about in other posts and you would still find something completely irrelevant to snivel about.Good job Harper. Keep up the good work.

Canadians are so lucky right off the bat we get to send China a million dollars to pay for the bamboo to feed these bears for a year. Harper has to sell our oil to pay for the 140 billion debt he's added to our national debt. The majority of the 140 billion is the result of his corporate welfare. Harper has proven to be the worst PM in Canadian history & we still have another 3 years of him. Mt guess is Harper & his neo-con reformers will bankrupt Canada at the rate he's wasting our tax dollars.

And please, don't continue to make yourself totally irreevant by constantly lashing out at others in the conservation.

To Gerry.. yea Harper will have to pay more welfare for the jobs that will never be created or will be lost by shipping this raw oilsands to crude to China for refining. China has a huge chunk of ownership in the oilsands and in the prospective pipeline.. to put it simply, they'll be shipping their oil through their pipeline on tankers for upgrading in their refineries in China. US oil companies, which are just about the only ones left in the oilsands will of course be profiting from these sales to China.. incidentally, for those who say let's refine here, Sinopec (Chinese) has a 17% stake in Syncrude there which allows them a veto for any of this oil to be refined in Canada. But please.. don't let that stop you from praising Harper for giving away this country to foreign interests without a thought to OUR quality of life. It seems for every one of these deals he makes, then there's a cut to one of our services.. oas currently. I reckon that you're going to bitterly regret having voted him in and sticking with him still, even now... the next election is too late.

Just bring the Pandas here to Canada... something Federal Liberal bell bottom Trudeau (fuddle duddle) moped rider Chretien (while in China) couldn't do, nor Martin. Many articles in the local papers who believe this deal is great for Canada bringing in more $$$ and jobs for Canadians something that is badly needed. Now if we can only get the Ontario Liberals on board to do something about this extravagant hydro boondoogle they have gotten us into. Cannot understand when we in Ontario could be buying hydro from Quebec cheaper and keeping jobs here in Ontario this Liberal Government did not use common sense so jobs would not go south of the boarder or many heading West to replace their jobs they lost to this poor Provincial Liberal Government management.
