A 28-year-old Mexican man confessed to brutally beating a Canadian tourist in the resort city of Mazatlan last week but said he did not intend to harm the woman.

Police arrested José Ramón Acosta Quintero, who is expected to appear before a judge within the next two days to face charges of attempted murder.

Sheila Nabb, a 37-year-old office manager in Calgary, and her husband Andrew were vacationing at the five-star Hotel Riu Emerald Bay when she was found beaten and bloodied in a hotel elevator last week.

Authorities presented Quintero to the media on Saturday. He spoke in both Spanish and fluent English, according to freelance reporter David Agren.

Agren, who attended the news conference, said Quintero was "low-key" as he outlined his version of events.

"It wasn't planned or anything like that. It just happened in the moment," Quintero told reporters. "I didn't try to abuse her, or I didn't … I didn't try to kill her or anything like … or rob her or anything. I was just afraid and I wanted to leave."

Quintero said he got into the hotel elevator after a night of drinking with a Canadian friend and "doing a line of cocaine," with the intention of going to the top floor to look at the lights of the city.

He says he encountered Nabb, who he said wasn't wearing any clothes, at the sixth floor and when he tried to prevent her from leaving she screamed, and he panicked.

"I covered her mouth and I said don't … don't … please don't yell. I'm gonna go home … just stop. But she continued yelling. She got more afraid when I covered her mouth. And then I hit her … four or five times in the face with my fist. And then I left."

Reporter Ioan Grillo told CTV News Channel earlier Saturday the state's prosecutor said Quintero is known to "get friendly" with guests.

Police identified the suspect from a video where they could see him getting out of the elevator where Nabb was assaulted and from blood on one his sandals, Grillo said.

"The sandal matches some of the blood from the victim," Grillo reported the prosecutor as saying.

Agren said police also say they found khaki shorts and a grey sweatshirt that are similar to clothing seen on the suspect in surveillance video taken from the hotel.

Police remain baffled as to a motive for the attack, he said. According to Agren, authorities have devoted a lot of resources to the investigation.

"They have been taking this very seriously," he said. "This is a town where cruise ships stopped coming in last year, so that has really impacted the tourist economy heavily here."

Victim arrives home

Nabb arrived back in Calgary on Friday on a private air ambulance flight and was taken to hospital.

Peter Byl, who runs Latitude Aeromedical Works, said Nabb's flight home took 3 1/2 hours.

"She did really well on the flight," Byl told The Canadian Press.

Byl's company uses a Learjet 35 aircraft to fly Canadian patients back home from destinations around the world. They operate under contract from private insurers.

Every bone in her face was broken, according to her family.

She was put into a medically induced coma and her jaw was wired shut prior to facial reconstructive surgery. It isn't clear whether Nabb had that surgery in Mexico.

Back in Canada, about $10,000 has been raised to help cover Nabb's medical costs. The money has been raised at the clinic where Nabb works.

"We've really been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from friends to strangers to you name it," said Jocelyn Tindall, who is Nabb's co-worker at Active Back to Health Centre.

She added that dental work had been offered free of charge to Nabb.

"Now she's back in Canada, so we're very happy to hear that," said Tindall.

I would think that her being attacked in a foreign country it would be up to their goverment to pick up the medical bill and the flight back to this girls country .When she gets back to Canada it is up to ohip to cover their end .Travel insurance won't cover everything .What are Canadians paying medical for ????
Do you have to be a high profile person to get special treatment .These foreign countries are not safe .When you are thinking about going on a trip do deep research on the crime rates are and what security is provided .All inclusives are not any safer than private rentals .Everyone should realize that although you are friendly in your country that being friendly while in another country may seem as a come on to some people so you don't have to be rude but use a little common sense into talking to strangers .

I,m amazed at how many people know so much statistically about crime in different nations. One says thousands of murders in Cananda. Wow i thought canada has less than 1000 all year. Don,t dare to compare Canada to Mexico when it comes to murder. Go live in Mexico and then see how safe it is. Mexico is the kidnapping capitol of the world ight know. Walk around at night go for a walk like you do here.Never will i go back there.

The people here who admire the Mexican justice system have got to be kidding. The man has no lawyer, the man has no rights, the man will pay and is forced into this parade. You cant possibly admire that? Canadian justice sucks and Mexican justice rules? Our laws are based on a constitution and a bill of rights and common law and precedent - without it, you pray everyday that nobody wrongfully picks you out of a line up. I thank god everyday we have rules.

I agree, I don't believe they have the right guy... possibly a scapegoat. It all seems far too corrupt for my liking. Still confused as to why she was naked in a elevator in the early hours. I must say I am proud to be a Canadian- and to see the generosity of donations to help this young couple out. Whether it be to cover medical expenses or help her husband to take some time off while she recovers. Best wishes to them.

We are in Mazatlan for 8 more weeks and feel as safe here as we do in our home city of Saskatoon. Mexico is a great place to visit and the people here are friendly and helpful. There are crazy people everywhere so all should be careful wherever they travel. We are glad Sheila Nabb is doing well and from what we have heard here the Mazatlan police worked very hard to find her attacker. And as far as the problems with the drug cartels nothing has occured in a tourist area here for over a year and there are a large number of people, police and military watching that nothing happens to us. A couple years ago a young man was randomly beaten with a baseball bat on a trendy street in Saskatoon but we still encourage people to visit. To not go to Mazatlan is like not going to Vancouver or Calgary or Saskatoon or anyplace where violence has been reported. We like many other Canadians will continue to come to a country where we are treated with respect and will enjoy all that Mazatlan and other places in Mexico have to offer.

I wish this woman a speedy physical and mental recovery. As to people comparing the safety of Mexico vs Canada, the big thing for me is the Mexican Police and judicial system. While we certainly have our bad apples in law enforcemnet, I have the general belief that I can trust our system not to falsely imprison me, ask me for bribes and generally be powerless against kidnappings and ransom. Also, yes there was a shooting at the Sheraton Wall centre, but the shootings in our drug trade are generally targeted.

I just watched the news where they showed the interview of the man arrested for this crime. First of all, I wish all crimes could be solved this quickly. Something just didn't sit right with me. In the interview the young man stated that the woman entered the elevator....naked. Excuse me?? Who walks the halls of a resort hotel naked?? The young man appeared very calm and basically sounded like he was reciting a memorized statement. I, personally, didn't believe a single word that he said.

The best of luck to the injured woman. May your recovery be short.

To the haters spouting off about the 'tax payers paying the bills'...

It was stated earlier that this couple did have insurance and even if they didn't the amount that will be paid by 'the taxpayer' is well spelled out for any service provided outside the country. Anything above that they would be responsible for. Thank goodness they won't have an overwhelming burden for that and she was able to get home quickly thanks to the insurance. Now that she's home and her care is technically being paid for by the taxpayers (including her and her husband), what's your beef? She's a contributor that needs the care that the system provides. Who cares where the event occurred that meant she needed that care?

And about the donations... This was a terrible event on what was supposed to be a relaxing, enjoyable time. People are touched by the story and want to help out someone that was dealt a very unfair hand. Money is an easy way to do that and if it helps with some uncovered items or even means she can recover somehow a little more comfortably, has a little extra time with her husband by her side or just something a little extra special to make that next vacation more enjoyable, So be it. If there is something left over at the end, perhaps they'll pay it forward. You don't have to contribute, but don't whine about it.

First of all, like many people, my heart goes out to Sheila and her family. I could not imagine what you are going through. However to my fellow "'comment'ers", start thinking...
1st-Why are people making such a fuss about the $10,000 raised? This money was donated by people who care(God bless them), and they donated it willingly. It's not like this money is being taken off YOUR paycheques!! So why do you care what people do with their money?
2nd-Thanks to the "'comment'ers" who also realize that crimes happen all over...assaults, thefts, gang activity, etc. I live in rural MB, and I still go to Winnipeg!!!

This is a horrible thing that happened. Unfortunately this could have happened any hotel any where in the world. I have been in this hotel & it is hard to believe that this has anything to do with being in Mexico . The security in the RIU is very tight .This man in all likely hood was registered as a guest. We have been coming every winter in Mazatlan for almost 15 years & it is no more dangerous than any other city in North America. Fortunately we weren't in front of the Grand Hotel at home in Kelowna when the gang land killing happened this past summer The majority of winter visitors to Mazatlan are CanadiansMost Americans have been fed the fear of crime south of their border. Most of which they are indirect ally responsible for, with their so called war on drugs & the flow of American fire arms. The Media has overblown & regurgitate every event that happens here which only compounds the problem , both for travellers & the Mexican economy.

I can't believe some of these comments here, blaming the victim and saying she doesn't deserve the generosity of those around her. Obviously you have never suffered a great injustice. Although as Canadians we are greatly fortunate to have the health care system we have, insurance does not cover everything. This past October my 54 year old father was riding his bike to work and was hit by some idiot who then took off. He, like this woman, suffered severe trauma, including every bone in his face shattered, severe frontal lobe damage and many other injuries. We are thankful to still have him with us but our lives will never be the same. He will never work again, my mother myself and brother will be responsible for caring for him for the rest of his life probably, and the driver is out there with absolutely living their lives like nothing happened. Both my parents have full health coverage and insurance but so much is not covered through insurance. Already, my family is out at least $150,00 and this is just the beginning. Please, if you are on here just to criticize someone you know nothing about and to blame her and her family, get off this site and stop commenting. When my dads' coworkers gave us a donation after the accident is was so kind, thoughtful and helpful. I am a full time student and after the accident picked up a part time job to help my parent's financially. People have no idea what happens to a family after something like this and the ignorance of some of these comment is like rubbing salt in a very deep wound. I wish this family all the best as they have a very long road ahead of them.

I do feel sorry for the family having to deal with all this but I feel especially sad for those posting such hateful and selfish comments. If someone chooses to support another, in difficulty, it has no bearing on you and should be of no concern to you. My hope is someday you'll let yourself be a little more compassionate and be able to let go of your anger. When you do, I assure you, you'll feel better about yourself, and those around you.

I live in Mexico and I am planning to visit Vancouver in a few weeks. I am staying at the Sheraton Wall Center in downtown Vancouver. I heard that recently someone was shot to dead at one of the hotel's restaurant right in front of the customers. I also heard that it is dangerous to walk at night along East Hastings Street because of the tolerance to drug abuse and prostitution in that particular section of the city. Perhaps I should consider spending my vacation and money at a safer place in the USA or somewhere else...

Canadians are attacked, robbed, beaten and murdered every day in Canada, by the thousands. How come these don't make the news? Its easy to blame Mexico, we hate it when Americans, "blame Canada" for terrorism, etc, yet now we are doing the very thing we hate them for doing. 1 millions Canadians visit mexico every year, "ONE MILLION". You will not find a Canadian city that has so little violence per capita as the population that travel to Mexico. You are MUCH more likely to be beaten and robbed in Canada then if you traveled to Mexico as a tourist. I see more people beaten on the streets of Kelowna, every weekend. Never makes the news.

I am discouraged and depressed reading many of the comments on this story. This is a horrible thing that has happened and my thoughts go out to everyone who has been affected. I cannot believe how many wannabe detectives are on here spouting off ridiculous theories without having a single fact. And those of you upset about Canadian taxpayers fronting the bills, who told you she doesn't have insurance? Have any of you ever suffered injuries like this? Do you know every cost involved? If you did, you would not be questioning anything. The only thing any single one of us should be saying are messages of support and solidarity. In our society today it may be difficult to remember that some of the things we see on tv and read on the Internet are real and real people have been affected what you say can be hurtful. Would you say these things to the families faces? My heart goes out to Sheila and her family both for the horrible attack in Mexico and the horrible, unfeeling reception she is receiving from too many people right here in Canada.

Some posters coments may sound a little crass or spiteful to you "Anita".But the question about medical insurance for travel remains a valid question. It's not suggesting that people without it should not be treated and helped. But we have to realize, that travel insurance for medical treatment is a part of how we pay to provide that help. No matter how innocent you are,or how right it is to help,it still has to be paid for.Premiums for travel insurance help do that.I think it is very fair for taxpayers to expect travelers to share some of these costs by purchasing the right insurance when they go to another country. The more you put yourself at risk, the more reasonable it is for taxpayers to expect you to shoulder a bigger portion of the costs. That said,I too am pleased the hear she is safely back in Canada, and hope she recovers as soon as possible.

Alberta Health would have INSISTED that Sheila Nabb be flown back to Canada for care. Even if there is great risk to a patient to travel. ...FACT : IT'S CHEAPER IF YOU DIE!!!.. An American doctor would have NEVER signed off on a medically induced coma "so that she could be safely transported back to Canada for care." BE ADVISED!!

This poor lady has been to hell and back and the trip has not ended yet! Unfortunately, going to a foreign country, especially Mexico, comes with a high risk today. With all the drug wars and "stuff" going on, a person would do well to stay home and travel at home here in Canada. You could even go to the United States, if you can stand to go through the constant airport scrutinization (scanning, etc.). We live in a different world than that of 20 years ago. Even the poor in Canada are considered affluent in other countries, and are "FAIR GAME".

I hate to say, it but I was right. To summaries some of my last posts over the last week about this story I said. Just because the attacker was dressed like a tourist, dose not mean that they were a tourist. Criminals wearing a disguise. People get things stolen by hotel staff all the time. tourists are told not to leave valuables or money laying around in their rooms, because the staff are thieves. The staff will steal expensive cloths that they cant buy in Mexico and sell them for what ever they can get. That happened to A friend of mine and his wife in Mazatlan 3 years ago some of their stuff and clothes got stolen from their room. Scenario A Staff member Steals some cloths. Then disguises himself as a tourist. Then he wonders around at night and Finds a rich looking tourist who is alone and he beats her and mugs her for whatever jewelry and money she might have on her. Only problem is he forgot about the hidden CCTV cameras in the elevator.I hope that this SOB does 10 years of hard time IE chain gang style. In the end I think it was all of us posters who said we are no longer going to go to Mexico because it is not safe. I think that forced the Mexican police to do something about this because they do not want to lose their tourists revenues.

Getting flown back to Canada does not fall under the terminology of deserving it. It is simply the right thing to do. Nothing makes this crime right. We are waiting to hear what made it wrong. Why does a 37 years woman leave her hotel room in the wee hours without telling her spouse? Anyone? Where did she initially encounter the accused? What were the circumstances that led them to be in the elevator together or was there some consent to be in one anothers company at some point? Was the quick arrest simply damage control for the tourist trade? Setting aside the tragic event there's a real puzzle here.

Missed work, for both boyfriend and Shelia, and probably a thousand other things that oh so fantastic insurance won't cover. What's the problem with a little generosity, or maybe you think she got every bone in her face broken for 10,000?

Let's not kid ourselves here. It is highly unlikely this attacker did not spend some time talking to the victim prior to the assault. Also, this attack could have happened anywhere in the world. Would this unfortunate incident have received as much press if it happened in Toronto, Edmonton or Calgary?

Absolutely agree! It's irresponsible to travel anywhere without medical insurance. I don't cross border shop without it!!!! The Canadian people shouldn't be expected to cough up the cash for the people not getting their affairs in order prior to travelling.

Why is it that whenever some gets medical bills they need to raise money, if they purchased travel insurance those bills would be paid
