The Mounties need more women in their senior ranks to help make the tough decisions that will help shape the force's future, the new RCMP commissioner said Friday.

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson told CTV's Canada AM that women comprise nearly 38 per cent of the police force's overall workforce, but they are not as well represented in higher-level positions.

These women need to have a greater voice in some of the "tough decisions" that the force faces, such as how to address problematic officer behaviours.

"There's many deserving women that need to be brought into the executive role to help us make these tough decisions," Paulson said.

But the commissioner cautioned that he would not force promotions simply to boost equity statistics.

"I recognize that most of our women are concerned that this increase in numbers in the senior ranks will be a measure that is just adding numbers," he said.

"I want to make sure that those employees and members that merit promotion get the promotion. I don't want people to think that we're moving women into the senior ranks just because we need more women."

Paulson has previously revealed that his top priority is to address allegations of sexual harassment that have been brought forward by female officers in recent weeks.

On Friday, Paulson reiterated that position, saying that "no one" wants to work in an environment where they have to fear possible harassment.

"One case is too many and when I hear stories like that and when my colleagues hear stories like that, we want to be able to act and reassure people that there is no place in our organization for that sort of behaviour," he said.

If we as Canadians want to take back our country from the nutters ruining it then we have to declare all out war on this "political correctness" stupidity as it is destroying Canada. People are becoming brainwashed dummies incapable of critical thinking and its domain is most frequently with government workers, institutions or the media. This Commissioner needs to assert his own stamp over the force and cut out the politically correct crap.

Ian - your comments are unfounded. Women can get along in the work place. Some of my best employees were women, and they were much easier to deal with some of my male employees. Singling out all women and saying they cannot get along is sexist - and for that - I wouldn't hire you if my life depended on it. A successful team means that all people need to be mature, understanding, and empathic - I don't know if you are employed, but if you are - you might want to take a sensitivity course. You won't move up high in the ladder with that 1950's attitude.

I spent 28 years in the RCMP, and this stuff was happening also in the 70s. Hiring and promotions should be on merit. When I first joined that is the way it was, but government intervention to make the force mirror the mosaic of the country forced them to throw out standards. We have now created a police force of uniformed social workers, that places crime solving way down the priority list. Deciding who make the officer rank has always been a bit of a joke. With the odd exception, most are not the cream of the crop of the workers, but those that have a friend in the right place. I was hoping this commissioner would be different, but if his opening statement is anything to go by, he is just a puppet to indoctrinate his political masters plan. The RCMP needed a commissioner that stays a long arms length away from the government. The brings back hiring practices that brings the best applicants in, based on merit only. The only three qualities that count are strong work ethics, honesty and integrity and most importantly common sense. None which they teach at university, so forget higher education values. That has shown to be of not much value. Start to teach recruits how to solve crime. Give them the skills, as currently very few appear to have them. Start a mentoring program.Start to fire the incompetent ones. Start with those lazy ones that have been milking the stress leave gaff for years.Start to create an atmosphere where the hard workers feel that they have a chance to move up the ladder, no matter the color of the skin or sexual orientation.

So many people bad mouth the RCMP and they fail to realize that the RCMP and in fact every police force is short staffed and bursting at the seams. There are not enough police to allow courses to be run on a million issues that police require. The tax payers aren't willing to foot the bill to have two policemen in each squad car and neither are the Government Leaders willing to cut the yearly pay increases and bonuses they insist they earn. So lets put the blame where it belongs.

Look at the comments and it is clear to see, there is a great unspoken truth not being reported on. White men are the ones being trampled in the country they built ... and just for saying that I will probably be labeled a racist. We have laws to protect women from physical violence, we should have laws to protect white men from the toxic work and school environments being created. They will triumph reports that women do better in schools and in the work force now as clear marks of superiority never admitting it has been done thru government funded and enforced "equality" Affirmative action only discriminates against white men. ..... why did we bother building this country again?

I'm all for more women in the RCMP, but lest keep in mind that most women can't work effectively with other women...Men call a spade, a spade...Women get even at all costs...And I do believe that any new hires in the RCMP should follow the Uniform Rule..In short, everyone wears the same headgear, adopts the grooming example of the many and hopefully be big enough to take on a felon without resorting to Tasers and the like..It's time we stopped catering to the minorities and started bringing pride back into the RCMP...For those who don't understand the word Uniform, it means same!

The RCMP is and of itself a complete anachronism and this type of thinking from its "supreme leader" proves that once again. This pronouncement is an admixture of sexism, political correctness and just plain stupidity. I cringe once again at the sad fact that the Province of British Columbia has struck an "agreement in principle" for a twenty-year policing contract with the RCMP. I might have hoped for better but am not surprised in the least. Here, in the 21st Century, we have an outdated and obsolete 19th Century paramilitary organization with a dictatorial top down management structure and we call it a "national icon"! Only in Canada you say! Sad, isn't it? Five years from now Paul Palango can no doubt write a sequel to "Dispersing the Fog" , but it won't be fog he will be writing about, it will be a highly viscous and quite smelly substance..

I have to agree with 'dis-gruntled' . Why not just quit all the political correcness and base hiring and promotion on merit? Forget the quotas on women, visible minorities and the gazillion points you get for being Francophone first language.Just give equal opportunity when hiring. Then you wouln't have to have different standards for graduating recruits. If they could all do the job equally well when they graduate, it would be OK, but the reality is that they can't. I don't want a second rate mountie attending if I need to call for police assistance - I want someone who can do the job, regardless of their appearance, gender whatever. It is past time that we got our priorities straight in the RCMP.

@J.C. I agree with you and alot of the other comments also. Don't start kicking people out and passing them over because they don't balance the sexes, Boy, this is not a good start in my opinion. There are a few women claiming this and that (yet to be proven) and all of a sudden you want them to take over-wow! Now that will be a problem, and unfair to hard working people and actually going on a merit basis!.

It seems to me I read somewhere this new commissioner was a no nonsense kind of guy. This media announcement does not convince me of that. I recommend the Commish - just forget about these press scrums and get to work improving the morale in the force and making the changes that need to be made in the RCMP mindset. Back to basics. Once you have achieved the successes you need to make then come back and brag about it. Use the old adage ... under promise and over perform not the reverse like your predecessor. Then I will be impressed but not until then sir.

I would have expected to see this headline in the late 1970's/early 1980's. I cannot believe this is perceived as genius on the part of the leader of a National Institution.

Here we go again, focusing on women on the federal work force. It is like they put on their blinders, their left wing, liberal minded, political correct garbage blinders and can't see beyond it. Women in government, in fact in a vast majority of the employment sectors now make up the majority of employees, to the point in some cases, the work places are almost %100 women and many at the top levels, this includes the federal government work force, wherein some departments are almost exclusively women, sick. In the mean time, men in great numbers are not even being hired for anything for 5, 10, 15 year stints and still this political correct garbage comes out and says they want more women. This fool they hired for the top level RCMP should be made to take re-verse sensitivity training, catch up with the times, and get off this women hiring foolishness that sees the majority of homeless and soup kitchen lines made up of men. WHEN ARE MEN GOING TO BE TREATED LIKE PEOPLE TOO!

There is a tendency when something goes wrong (an RCMP incident of some nature) in a particular city for the RCMP to send in there supervisors into that area and crack down on everyone. That is exactly the wrong thing to do. Because 99% of the officers in that area are often doing a very good job. This demoralizes the rank and file, because they ask . Why are they picking on me? I am doing a good job. This is what I have been told. So, Mr Paulson needs to look at that. It is extremely important for morale.

The fact he says "we need" more women is in response to an agenda...somebody's agenda and the wrong agenda. What about needing more visible minorities or more unilingual English Canadians etc etc etc etc etc .... Commissioner JUST PICK THE BEST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE and get the job done. This is getting nauseating watching organizational leaders do this in the media to be seen as being politically correct. It is total "non-sense" is what it is.

Well, the RCMP continues to be a disgrace. Any organization that pays any special attention to a race or sex is by default racist and sexist. In Canada we're supposed to be equal but its plain to see that the White heterosexual male is the lowest of the low. Paulson should be fired for embracing such a policy. As a matter of fact the Govt of Canada (fed, provincial, and municipal) owes a huge apology to the White heterosexual male for these attacks on them.

No job no matter where it is should be giving promotions based on sex or minorities or any other reason other than whether a person is well qualified to do the job!! Too many people with extremely good abilities are overlooked for promotions in many places because of this desire to "balance" the sexes. You either have what it takes or you don't!! Oh ya I'm a female.

women will be promoted faster now even though many men are better qualified. of course now male officers will be scared to say anything to female officers because it could be interperted as harassment. it will be difficult for male supervisors to discipline female subordinates because of this .in other words it is always the man who will be shafted. the force has changed over the years and not for the better.

Again, this old style top-down thinking is the paradigm that has brought us all these issues and debacles over the years. In order for change to occur this guy ought to be seeking to understand the view of those in the trenches, develop a culture of engagement, respect, compassion and integrity. This is usually not done issues orders from on high.

Why single out women? According to the Ontario government department of education we have 6 genders to consider namely lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual, two-spirited, intersexed, queer and questioning. Who is speaking for their interests? So why just women? I have no issue with women holding senior ranks. I think women are as capable as men as long as they hold the credentials and merit for any position and the same for any of the 6 other genders that McGuinty says we have to 'respect'. However to single out women and make a statement saying we need more is a response to a demand to be seen as "politically correct" anmd if so then you must include all 6 genders. One would have desired that we didn't have to say anything and rather just pick the qualified person for the job and treat them with the same consideration we do anyone else and award them accordingly. To single out women could be argued puts qualified people of all 5 other genders at a disadvantage due to this damn insane "political correctness". Don't you think its time we ditch this increasingly foolish notion of "political correctness". Political correctness is a shield to hide behind if you are not sure of yourself and fear the criticism of others. Those who understand the truth do not need to hide behind "political correctness".

Working for this organization for ten years I can't figure why its so hard to put some common sense back into decision making. I'm sure it was there many years ago at one time but not anymore. I realize that many of the ridiculous decisions and procedures that we do are a result of pressure from the ill informed public and government members and in the ensuing scramble the RCMP creates policy or procedures that do little to help encourage independent thought while applying common sense. Basically, its been legislated out with bureaucracy. Political correctness will be our undoing. What's wrong with hiring the best man/woman for the job? Over the last few weeks I have read articles surrounding harassment and how the RCMP is a "boys club". Well I can say I certainly wasn't invited to that club. When I applied I was originally told that if I was not a female or a visible minority I shouldn't bother, I did anyway. Then I was told because I was a white male I needed to score higher on the aptitude test and because I was male I needed to score higher on the physical tests. I did. Since my ten years on, I have learned and felt that I have needed to score or work harder then my female or minority counterparts and have opted not to apply for any promotion where I have to compete with minorities or females. Promotion is out of the question for me unless I decide to get a sex change or change my skin colour. I have no problem working with capable females and minorities but is it so hard to ask that positions be given to people on merit rather than gender, colour or religion?

If Paulson is serious about improving the image of the R.C.M.P. may I suggest he go back to the future and re-instate the standards they had prior to politrical correctness taking it's effect on the force which over time has impuned their image in the public eye. Give them back the high regard in which they were once held . I doubt if employing more women and aboriginals will will do that.
