OTTAWA — A human-rights group says agents from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service interrogated a Libyan-Canadian while he spent eight years in one of Moammar Gadhafi's prisons.

Human Rights Watch says Mustafa Krer, 46, was detained by Gadhafi from 2002 to 2010 for alleged ties to a Libyan resistance organization that has been linked to al-Qaida.

Krer is quoted as saying Canadian interrogators visited him about three times between 2003 and 2005.

The group says CSIS agents questioned him jointly with a team of Libyans in the room.

While the former prisoner does not claim mistreatment during the CSIS interrogations, he says his Libyan captors beat him repeatedly.

Andrea Prasow, senior counter-terrorism counsel at Human Rights Watch, calls the allegation troubling and says Canadian agents must have known their Libyan counterparts were involved in torture.

Human Rights Watch is calling on CSIS to come clean on its role in Krer's detention in Libya.
