Another foot has washed up in British Columbia -- the 11th found along the coastline in the last four years. But while B.C. officials say they don't consider any of the discoveries to be the result of foul play, a Toronto-based forensics expert is not so sure.

Forensics consultant and former Toronto Police detective Mark Mendelson says with this many feet being found in such a short period of time, he's suspicious something is up.

"I don't know whether you can look at this as just a coincidence," he told CTV's Canada AM Thursday.

Mendelson says one or two feet washing up on shore is weird enough; but this many feet, this often, is pretty fishy.

"You have to ask yourself: why is this only happening on the West Coast? Why aren't these body parts floating up in Nova Scotia, or St. John's, or off the coast of New Jersey? Something is very, very strange here," he said.

In the past four years, 11 shoe-clad feet have washed up on beaches near Vancouver, along the southern Georgia Strait and off Washington State.

Four of the feet have been identified as belonging to three individuals who had been reported missing, but the identity of the rest remain a mystery.

The latest foot was found floating Tuesday in the water along False Creek in downtown Vancouver by a young boy. The shoe and foot were attached to lower leg bones. The B.C. Coroners Service says an autopsy confirmed the foot is human, but further tests are needed to determine whether it's a man or woman's foot.

In previous cases, police have said it appeared the feet separated naturally from bodies that were likely in the water for some time. Each time, they have said that foul play wasn't suspected.

But Mendelson says at this point, "You have to think dirty," and consider foul play.

He says it's true that a lot of people go missing in both Canada and the U.S. who are never reported missing. But if all these feet belong to people who were suicide victims or died in float plane crashes or drownings, why are only feet showing up?

"Where are all the rest of the body parts?" Mendelson wondered.

He says in his almost 30 years with the Toronto Police Service and in his 15 years in homicide, he's done lots of investigations of bodies that turned up floating in waterways.

"Body parts do eventually make their way to the surface. So why are we only getting feet? Why are they only in running shoes? I'm not sure I buy the theory that it's because the shoe floats," he said.

Mendelson says forensic anthropologists will likely begin this investigation by looking at the break point of the leg, to see if there are striations or cut lines that show whether the leg was cut off with a saw or other implement.

They can also do tests on the bones to determine the approximate age of the victim. And they can talk to the shoe manufacturer about the brand of shoe that was found to determine when it was available for sale.

They'll also run DNA tests on the foot, but that may not reveal much, Mendelson said. DNA results do not reveal identify on their own; they have to be matched with other DNA to be useful.

"If you can't attach it to a human being, it's just a piece of paper with letters and numbers," he said.

The lower mainland is a destination for Canada's homeless. They meet unfortunate ends here other than by freezing to death. Does Halifax have the homeless flocking to their shores? Van is 2M pop vs Halifax 300k. Take a look at a map and you'll see much of the coast is Washington state. Do authorities share DNA info across international boundaries?

There have been additional feet with runners washing up along the northern Washington State shorelines also. Floatplane - yes, those have been identified, suicides - yes, tusnami victims - perhaps, illegal immigrants who died during the trip tossed overboard - yes, gang disposal - yes, foul play - yes. I think it's a combination of all the above. I wouldn't put any faith in the VPD or RCMP's ability to properly investigate this due to the HWY of Tears serial killer being on the loose for over 20 years, and Picton, and how every many others there are.

Someone below suggested this was a "Dexter" publicity stunt. To me, this reminds me of a recent "Bones" episode. Life is stranger than fiction, but I'm thinking this is a copy-cat situation?

I think it would be wise for everyone to stop wearing running shoes. This would put an end to whatever is happening.

Merlin, I was thinking the same thing! How can they say the victim didnt meet foul play with just a foot? what if they were shot, strangled, stabbed, beaten, suffocated, raped, choked, sqeezed to death...whatever, just a foot wouldnt tell you this

To those of you advocating the Tsunami theory, consider this. If the currents are moving 0.1-0.5 Knots it would take these feet 1.5 - 7.5 years to reach Vancouver harbour. With all the people lost in Indonesia, what are the odds that 7 years later at least two matched pairs would show up here, in the same harbor nearly 7000 nautical miles away from their origin. As for the jumper theory, it makes sense that if you don’t have people who will take care of you when you’re down on your luck, you also won’t have someone to report you missing when you’re not around.

I read up on other findings and I understood that two of the feet were matched to missing men. There is no info on those cases but i would think they would be a good starting point ... were the men missing? Strange circumstance? Were they suicidal? Were they anywhere near the tsunami? Also, a foot was washed up in sweden too. Is it related?IMHO- 11 body parts from 10 bodies doesnt seem coincidental...

When it comes to do some thing useful, like investigating a potential serial killer or where these feet in shoes are coming from, POLICE forces in this province are as useless and incompetent as law makers who protect them.

""B.C. officials say they don't consider any of the discoveries to be the result of foul play""How can you say that without the rest of the body to look at.I thought you can not use presumtion to assess a outcome.

Scuba diver is right. Most likely victims of the Japanese tsunami and the Thailand tsunami back in 04. Pacific Ocean currents run almost directly from Japan straight across the pacific. A decomposed foot and leg bones would bob and float under the buoyancy of a light weight running shoe. It's really not that baffling.

As a Torontonian I have to wonder why they enlisted the help of one or our former cops when Toronto has one of the highest unsolved murder rates in North America. As somebody here said earlier, I too wonder if an undertaker or somebody working in a funeral home in some capacity might be connected. If they were all missing persons it still wouldn't explain why it's just the feet eventually showing up.

I don't really see the big mystery here, these are probably suicides, someone jumps off the bridge, the body sinks to the bottom and marine life go to work. The feet become disarticulated and the buoyancy of the shoe brings the feet to the surface where the tides carry them to shore. Why are there so many in such a narrow window; probably a result of the recession taking away peoples livelihoods and leaving them depressed with a pessimistic outlook on life. Not sensational I know, but far more realistic than a foot fetish serial killer.

Strange. I'm sure there are a lot of missing people in BC due to their large population, but why haven't all the relatives of missing people given DNA samples. It would make matching simple, unless the feet are from another country. Why don't we have a national missing registry with DNA samples?

Bizarre circumstances should lead one to bizarre answers. Has anyone considered who would have a constant supply of bodies? Undertakers of course. Think about it.

Have the authorities checked to see how many of these missing persons were joggers or runners? Could be that victims were targeted by a serial killer. Look how long it took for police to connect Robert Pickton to his victims... I agree that not many people on a beach would be wearing socks and sneakers, so the tsunami theory might not be so logical, but the illegal immigrant idea might be feasible. I doubt very much that these feet in sneakers are a 'natural' occurrence.

Don't wear running shoes! I wonder if we will ever know what this all means. It's probably going to be something crazy weird, like a boat-fishing trolley of some kind that is combing the bottom of the Fraser River and stirring up bodies that have sunk to the bottom. The foot sneaks through and the rest get's catch up: Somewhere there is a bunch of bodies and no feet! Sounds like we need Gill Grissom back from CSI to solve this water-logged, sneaker-hating, foot-severing mystery. He would have solved this case and 5 others by the first foot, and would have known where to look for the rest of the feet! Aside from the TV dramas, I apparently watch waaaay to much of; I hope they do figure this out.

It could be a series of murders where the torso is held down but the feet eventually float due to the running shoe taking the foot with it... interesting story.

Yeah seem's interesting. It could be really anything. Foul play, natural disaster victims. This is actually suspicious that only the shoe comes.

Where do you think all the missing people from the tsnamis in Asia went? Currents carry them across the ocean, bodies break up, fish eat them, and the floating running shoes enable the feet to float up on shore. Other bones sink.

So the guy from Toronto thinks he is more knowledgeable than the Cops from BC? Theory has always been the possibility of Immigrant boats from the Orient. Trouble makers would be just thrown overboard. Running shoes are for sale around the world-very cheap. Only in America are they high class and costly. @ joe-the rest of the body would have been eaten by sharks etc or just dissintegrated and come apart over time. The shoe would somewhat protect the foot. Nothing has ever been said as to the degree of decomposure of these feet. Where they dumped in the ocean a week ago or years ago?

Notice it's always a running shoe. There are probably many more people but they were wearing shoes that don't float. Something is going on.

I have to agree with Mark Mendelson on this one. I wondered the same when the first five showed up especially since they seemed to show up one after the other. Now they are up to 11 and how many have matched to the same person? So how many people are we really looking at here and all within a time span of a few years? How many are out there that have not shown up yet?

Maybe Hollywood films have gotten the better of me, but my gut feeling revolves around gangsters of some sort hand-cuffing or tying wayward victims or traitors to some heavy object and tossing them in the ocean. Kind of like how bad pet owners would toss their unwanted pet in a burlap bag with a rock in it and send them to a watery grave. Every time I read about these feet washing ashore, these scenes come to mind....

Feet are the only body part found because running shoes float. If you notice all the feet were wearing running shoes. New Zealand claims to find between 10 - 15 feet a year on there shores, so this is not only a B.C. problem. The ocean currents are such that they drive everything onto our shores from anywhere in the north Pacific. In a few years we will starts seeing items from Japans tragedy washing up on our shores.

Suzy

Perhaps we are only seeing feet because sea life eat the remaining parts-the shoe protects the foot from animals, birds and fish... just a thought. Sounds like something is going on in the Vancouver area.

There has never been mention whether or not they had found a matching shoe to one previously found. Are all these different shoes? Where is the second shoe and foot? So many questions. I think the fact that they are all running shoes is a big clue. If it is foul play, a specific type of person is being targeted.

For those of you who have sarcastic comments about the foot being identified as human: You may recall a couple of years ago a shoe was found washed up that did have a bear paw in it. Bear paw at first glance looks similar to human and whoever had put it in a shoe, had also put it in a sock. So, uh, yeah, it does have to be officially identified as human.

I have to wonder whether anything was learned fromt the Pickton debacle? Cops in that case took years to recognize there was a problem....how long will this foot issue be denied? Don't we deserve better?

interesting thought that they might be from tsunami victims, however, I really dont think people vacationing at a tropical resort on the beach would be wearing shoes and socks

There was a fake foot (a paw) in a shoe a few years ago, that's why they had to test to make sure it was human, guys. Calm down.

And here I thought a foot found in a shoe belonged to a cat! My bad, good thing an autopsy proved me wrong. On a side note, this whole feet washing up on shore thing is a little disturbing, however I am sure there is a perfectly good (less sinister) explanation. I think someone suggested bodies from the tsunami... could be.
