Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby's concussion symptoms have returned, and he may not be ready for the start of the NHL season, sources have told CTV Atlantic.

The Cole Harbour, N.S., native has not played a game since January 5, 2011, after he suffered his second hit to the head in less than a week.

Sources say Crosby's concussion symptoms returned last week and he cancelled all of his scheduled on-ice workouts at a Halifax-area rink.

Penguins players are expected to appear at training camp in mid-September and Crosby is considered doubtful to be one of them, seven sources close to Crosby told CTV Atlantic.

However, Crosby's agent has refuted the report.

"Sidney hasn't been shut down by anyone. He has simply adjusted his summer program accordingly to the different needs for the appropriate recovery," Crosby's agent Pat Brisson told ESPN Monday. "Training camp is in three weeks from now. It is too premature to speculate all kinds of deliberate information at his point. Sidney will address the media at the appropriate time in order to give everyone an update. As far as I know training camp hasn't started yet."

Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma told NHL.com last week that he did not ask Crosby about his health this off-season.

In addition, Penguins general manager Ray Shero did not deny earlier reports that Crosby might not be able to start the season.

Time for Sidney to retire, I'm afraid. Once a concussion, always a concussion.

Bob in Chatham The thing is and some will not like this but the hit was not all that bad. The other issue some will not like as well is these stars are aslo guilty of bad hits one of the dirtest player sin the league is ovechkin.

Goons are easy to come by. Ultimate Fighting is full of them. Hockey stars are few in comparison. It is nonsense for hockey's leaders to allow goon behaviour to override the skills aspect of the game. Reducing hockey to inertia and mass, crashing and thrashing is a huge disservice to hockey.

hockey is a disgrace now. raw talent being taken out by goons. When a player stands out for their ability every team lacking such players just send guys out to take them out. Olympic hockey is the only hockey worth watching. NHL is nothing but UFC on ice.

If he were my son I would ask him to think of his future. A game (tho at the professional level) that may take or drastically change your life, is not worth all the other contributions you can make in this world. Look to your other strengths, make changes and direct your courage to move on. You are an amazing athlete with tenacity and drive. Show your courage and tenacity in another way. So sad that this is the situation, yet there may be other 'greatness' awaiting you in another arena.

Did anyone actually miss him last season? (Penguins fans excluded).

Take away the instigator penalty and allow the enforcers to do their job. Enforcers are to protect the stars. Today's NHL doesn't have enforcers they have goons. This is a product of the Gary Betman version of the NHL.

Game over dude. Another victim of our glorification of violence on skates.

Slow and steady, man. I'm sure there're people who see this as something negative about Crosby, but frankly, a young guy like him shouldn't be risking his health by hurrying his return. Take the time needed and ensure a long career, makes perfect sense to me.

I hope that he returns to the game of hockey. He is, in my opinion, the greatest player to ever put on a pair of skates. You bring excitement to the game, Sid, we need you back.

The game needs Sid but does Sid need the game? I hope so but not over his future health. Listen to yourself and your family, that is where your best advice will flow. Good luck :)

It is really sad that such a talented player is sidelined by hits from a couple of goons. Hockey has always been a tough game, but something needs to be done to prevent such career ending violence.

Good job, NHL! Who needs stars when you have goons.

I fear that we will not see this star on the ice again. Though he does not need to play again as he has made many records and is a household name, it is sad to think that he may be out forever. I hope the NHL looks at this and makes changes,, you give a headshot you are out as long as that player that you injured is,, perhaps looking at the equipment that they are wearing, its protects us so well we are hitting harder and injuring others,, and bring back the goons like in Gretzky's days when there was protection for these superstars. Its a sad day in Hockey when we lose one of the greats in the prime of his career due to injury

Its not worth your life.. or your brain... I think he is only as good as his next "hit"... It is such a shame. .this should never be allowed to happen to such a nice and talented player. I hope the powers that be will learn from this and change it so he is the last one that suffers from this. I do wish him well!!

Cosby should take all the time he needs before returning to the NHL season. He knows best.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
