Prime Minister Stephen Harper put in a campaign plug for Ontario's Tories, saying it was time to complete a "hat trick" and join Toronto in painting the country blue in a move that would defeat the provincial Liberal government.

Harper made the remarks on Tuesday at an unannounced visit to the family home of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, a populist conservative elected last fall.

Ford, whose family was holding an invitation-only barbecue in honour of Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, introduced the prime minister as his new fishing partner.

"I love to fish, so if anyone wants to take me out, let's go fishing," Ford told the crowd of Conservative campaign volunteers, staffers and supporters at his mother's suburban Etobicoke residence.

Harper exchanged a few quips with Ford, saying the mayor didn't live up to his reputation because he "refused to kill and eat (the fish)," before thanking Ford for his support during the federal election.

"Rob endorsed us in the election. That helped a lot," the prime minister said, amidst applause from the partisan crowd.

In advance of the October provincial election, Harper said it was time to "complete the hat trick and do it provincially as well."

Both Harper's and Ford's speeches were captured on video and posted to YouTube.

The event was organized by Conservative MPs Patrick Brown and Kellie Leitch, who billed the event as an appreciation night for Flaherty and his efforts during last spring's federal election.

In his address, Harper also said he and the mayor were each cleaning up a "left-wing mess." The prime minister didn't specify, however, what federal left-wing mess he was referring to.

Politically, however, the federal Conservatives have made significant gains in Ontario. During the May 2 federal election, the Conservatives won 73 out of the province's 106 seats.

Early polls suggest Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty's two-term Liberal government faces a tough challenge from Tim Hudak's provincial Progressisve Conservatives.

Rob Ford's record thus far has been less than impressive, and will hurt Hudak's chances in Metro Toronto more than it will help him.
Ontario doesn't need the Hudak version of the so called 'common-sense' revolution. (Once was enough!)

It is difficult to believe anything McGuinty or his members say because they are all pathological liars. They also failed badly in both Math and Economics at school, unless of course they played hooky during those classes

It is time for a new government in Ontario. The Liberals have done just about as much damage as they could to the province. NDP doesn't work in Ontario and it looks as though this Liberal government is doomed in October!

I am fundamentally a fiscal conservative. I voted for the Conservatives in the last federal election. I cheered out loud when Rod Ford won the Toronto Mayoralty race But, there is no way in hell you can get me to vote for the Ontario PC's. Not a chance. I don't like a lot of the things Dalton McGuinty has done but the risk of another Liberal government far outweighs the drubbing we would take at the hands of Tim Hudak or the economic disaster the NDP would bring. Rather than punishing ourselves by punishing the Liberals, something we've done in the last 8 provincial elections, lets use some logical thought and not have another knee jerk change of ruling parties.

Move on Harper! He keeps gloating about liberals lack of showing to the polls, but he keeps forgetting a. he barely got his majority, b. NDP a left leaning party grew their support substantially c. if Harper keeps 'bragging eliminating' the liberals maybe even more people from working category and middle class will vote for NDP in next elections ... and I do not think going more to the left would be beneficial mainly any other than 'union member families' and maybe students.d. Harper's should be worried about NDP as seasons can change very quickly in politics especially when concervative manadate is rather limiting.

Craig, last time I checked the Prime Minister was of the SAME party as Tim Hudak....they are called Conservatives...not like the free spending Liberals you so love. Keep voting Liberals and watch all those so called no tax hikes keep kicking in. Ontario is in the same situation as when Bob Rae left us...oh an NDP switched to Liberal because no one in Ontario would ever vote for a fraud like him again.

Just what we need Mike Harris Jr. getting led down the garden path by Father Stephen. I knew Hudak when he was the MP representing Fort Erie. The guy never done a thing for the area and never will. When asked, numerous time, about how he was going to help the town his pat answer was "Let me look into that and get back to you". Well we're still waiting. During Hudak's tenure Fort Erie has lost most of the jobs in Fleet Industries, Horton Steel (shut down), CN Rail (moved out of town). This directly cost Fort Erie 2,000 good paying jobs, not to mention the spin off jobs. These might have been replaced with a few minimum wage jobs.

This is the future under Harper and Hudak. Your children's future is at stake - vote accordingly or suffer the consequences.

And what a boon to Toronto that Ford is......or is it embarassment?

Rob Ford is at it again. Guess he's going to ask Harper to help out with the city budget to make himself and Harper look like heroes. First, cause the uproar by hiring a company that only looks at cuts to the city services and not efficiencies, then solve the problem by going to the federal government for a bailout. How transparent.
Rob, don't you realize you are being manipulated by the federal Cons? And at the expense of the people of Toronto and their lives and emotions? Another way of proving your level of - hmmmm... don't want to call it smarts, so what do you call it?

He most certainly was not against that "Afghanistan" war.Perhaps you are talking about another war about blankets?

Thank God Hudak stayed away. The last thing Ont PC's need is an endorsement from Mayor Ford.If Hudak's smart he will continue to keep his distance from the Ford brothers, the poster children of literacy and the "No Service Cuts" guarantee. As a PC, I wish they were upfront and said simply that city hall's spending was unsustainable and nothing is off the table in terms of cuts. Like a family's hick cousins, the Ford brothers give PC's a bad name.

Samantha - how much are you being paid to post your tripe? Conservatives didn't need to pay anyone to get their majority. Clearly, you are not getting your money's worth from the Libs or NDP or whoever else it is that are paying you not to vote for the next majority Conservative government in Ontario. It will happen. McGuinty will soon be history - a very bad segemnt of history.

Craig, what were your feelings on McGuinty's cronies campaigning against Ford in Toronto during their mayoral election? Or against Harper in the last Federal election? Were you equally upset by those? Or is it only when Harper does it? I agree with you, but I hope you have the consistency to be disgusted when ANY party does this, including Liberals.

Harper, Ford & Hudak - together they can build their dream of dividing the city, the province and country into the HAVES and the HAVE NOTS, just like America.

Harper is on the right track. He is by far the best prime minister this country has ever had. He has led us through the worst recession in recent history and because of him Canada came out on top. Keep it up Harper.

You guys forgot what Mike Harris did to Ontario. He sold toll HWY 407 to a foreign company and made us pay the tolls. This Highway was built using Our tax dollars. He closed hospitals and later we have to hire nurses from the States...

Its great that the Prime Minister is trying to help Tim Hudak because he needs all the help he can get .
The Teacher's Unions and "big solar" will be putting a lot of money into the Liberal Campaign.
Mcguinty is sitting on a 2% hst increase as well as an income tax increase in order to keep spending big money and to keep the unions happy . Its time for a change .

Craig - your comments are interesting - apparently you have been living under a rock....because it is summer and there is no government in session. It's like school - nothing gets done over the summer. So you are going to have to wait well into the fall to see what this governement does.

Harper has also led this country through a recession caused by the U.S. He has pulled our military out of Afgan, a country we shouldn't have been in but were because of the liberals.
I agree, it's time to turf McGinty and company out of Ontario and get back to being a have province instead of a have-not.
We have one of the strongest if not the strongest economy in the world.
Mr. Harper is going down the right path, no matter what CTV may think.

It is rather hard to say if Harper's endorsement will help or hurt Tim Hudak --- traditionally Federal leaders tend to avoid direct involvement in provincial elections and Ontario historically elects opposing parties at the federal and provincial level of government.... I am beginning to doubt anyone can save Ontario now, in is in such a mess.

This is what bothers me, I am a Liberal and I was told by this Prime Minister and a few of his MP's to sit back and watch them work before I judge them. I basically said "ok", as long as no serious social policy comes up, I will let them do what the country mandated them to do.

So instead of doing anything of value for Canadians this summer, the Prime Minister is coming out and campaigning for Hudak, who isn't even in the same party as he is. You are the federal leader, not the provincial leader. Stop with the rhetoric nonsense and get down to governing.

If you want me to give you a chance, then govern Canada and let Tim Hudak and his party work to get elected this fall. This is not your place.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children.
