One thirsty Canadian traveller just got back from an around-the-world journey armed only with a video camera, a YouTube account and plenty of Cokes.

Duane Perera, from Edmonton, documented his year-long trip by videotaping himself in each destination with a Coca-Cola in hand and posting the videos on his YouTube account.

"I remember going to remote villages in Africa and Asia," he told CTV News on Sunday. "I'd encounter people that didn't speak English at all, but they still knew what Coca-Cola was."

A YouTube video shows Perera posing with or drinking a Coco-Cola in 48 different cities around the world. He visited 36 countries in total.

Perera and his Coke are seen getting caught in La Tomatina, the tomato tossing festival, in Bunol, Spain, climbing to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and siting atop a camel in Giza, Egypt.

Perera hit every populated continent, travelling to Switzerland, Lebanon, Thailand, Argentina, China, Kenya, Peru, Australia and Italy, among others, sipping a Coke in each location.

The trip, which was spurred by a failed relationship and his upcoming 29th birthday, put Perera in $27,000 worth of credit card debt.

"Not exactly the most financially responsible thing to do," he said.

He said he's hoping the soft drink company will help him with his debts and that a commercial may be in the works.

But even if he doesn't get any money from Coca-Cola, Perera said he doesn't regret the trip.

"This is an investment in myself, and I've learned so much on this trip and I can take those lessons with me for the rest of my life," he said.

The YouTube video has received almost 400,000 views since it was posted.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
